JB Hi-Fi 'Direct Import' - e.g. Nikon D3100 Single Lens Kit $618

750

was just looking around on JB's website following the Soniq TV post and noticed that they are now doing grey imports for dslr cameras, lenses and some flashes.
prices look even cheaper than kogan, e.g. nikon dslr single lens kit for $596 + $22 delivery.

Canon 24-104 F4 USM Lens for $918 thats a awesome price

  • wow great price for lens

  • +32

Ah, finally, this is the way to do it!

…not some retard radio commercials trying to convince me to buy in store instead of online :)

Why would I buy in store, if:

A., retailers are rude, unprepared (and at least half of them looks like a fish bait with all their piercings in their head)
B., costs 1.5x more than online?

At least with actions like this, the B part is getting closer :)
(wonder when will Australia focus on part A though…)

    • +14

LOL at the fish bait comment.

    • +4

Must try catching fish with Jb Staff. There's a Ray outdoors next to the one in DFO

    • +3

Good observation, mate. Couldn't have put it better on the part A. Bugs me every time I go there. Not to forget the all color visible in all their glory tattoos as well.

    • +5

If they don't give you a good enough deal, can you threaten them with a magnet?

It's screwed in my opinion, I don't have any crap like that. Don't have a job…they get all the scrap metal parts they want and they don't seem to have trouble finding work…can't figure it out!

      • +4

Perhaps it's because piercings have absolutely no impact on whether or not they are any good at their job. The only issue it poses is with people who look on such things in a negative light, and I dare say the issue then is with the customer not the sales person.

Thats not to say all JB staff good, but whether they have a piercing or not is completely irrelevant.

        • +12

I might argue about it with you.

Let's say you were given a task to make classifications on social behavior and intelligence just by looking at the following "properties" of a person:

          • Does / does not have tattoos
          • Does / does not have piercings
          • Does / does not have extreme hair style

After your research, you might find that these types are in strong correlation with behavior and average intelligence.

I'm not saying this classification (called 'stereotype' in everyday language) are always true - I'm saying IF you want to avoid classification, you might want to NOT have those properties than the group has that you don't want to belong to.

To summarize, if I'm a retail shop owner, I'd try to pick the 'average Joe' guys just to make sure none of my customers judges them on their weird outlook (on a very edge case: no, I'd not hire a black guy with tattoos, piercings, always carrying a big gold cross on his chest. Why? Because 99% of my customers would think I've employed a drug dealer AND I make money on my customers not the ability to hire weird people).

        • +4

          @ocoolio

Couldn't disagree more man, people shouldn't be stereotyped because they way they dress/look. I have a friend who puts his hair up in massive spikes/mohawk on the weekends or when he's with friends but during work hours he puts it to the side. You wouldn't know he wears his hair like this but if you saw it would you decide to fire him? I think it's a bit ridiculous, have whatever work dress codes you require but don't judge people on the way they express themselves.

        • +9

Keep in mind the retailer you are running is one that uses nikko pens on yellow pieces of paper to do up prices/offers etc and has a catalogue with phases like "Bananas", "Crazy", "Totally Wicked" and "Bonkers" listed alongside literally every item in the catalogue. They clearly aren't aiming to be another Myer, and even if they lost the tattoos and piercings they still wouldn't meet many peoples expectations of a professional outlet.

In fact, the casual dress code and everything else suggests to me they are aiming for that kind of look because there is something more casual about it. They've always been about undercutting other big name outlets and part of that is probably having staff that are a polar opposite to Harvey Norman or Myers cleanly dressed and groomed staff.

Also, it's not like those other department stores are renowned for having great staff either.

        • +3

can this top being a post on the physical attributes of JB staff. Almost all of them use some form of body art but the local shop staff is much better than the average joe Dick Smith.

Although their appearances might be daunting, JB staff are much friendlier and easier to pricematch/beat with in Canberra City/Fyshwick

        • -1

perhaps u shud leave out that part abt "black guy", otherwise totally agree with u.
if im an owner, no way im gonna hire emo kids, they scare the sh*t out of me

        • +1

And much to your surprice, all coefficients are significantly positively related to 'better' behaviour and individual intelligence…… just before you find out that there is a missing variable in your model: how dumb the customers are lol…… just kidding.

        • So superficial, ocoolio.

If you wanted to prejudice a prospective employee's intelligence, you should instead probe their religiosity and sexual history/prospects. :p

        • This is the funniest thing I have ever read. Thanks for making my day guys.

        • +1

          @thatsnasty

I need a fishing partner? You up for it?

    • +1

      Totally agree on A.

      • Their social skills sucks
      • They smell
      • Probably majority of them you'd see at Occupy Sydney (now defunct)
JB Hifi has this weird job selection, if you don't fit that part, they won't hire you, regardless of your x no. of retail experiences
      • All the hipster/art students are out today

    • +1

I've found them all right, they have a fairly good returns policy

    • +2

who cares what they look like, its the lack of customer service some of them have that gets me.

  • +1

Sweet! I still haven't picked up a 50mm prime. Might get around to this since the Canon 50mm 1.8 is under $100.

    • yeah its under 100$.. but just.. Gotta remember the 15$ postage! I got a bit excited there too

      • DWI ebay store has it for AUD$99 with Fedex express shipping (they usually ship it on the same day too if you place the order before 12pm HK time)

430 is cheaper at jbhifi than dwi o.O

    hmmmmmmmm

  • is this just a lens or is this the body+lens kit?

  • +9

About time JB did something like this. Props to them!

Prices look slightly cheaper/more expensive/equal (depends on what gear you're looking at) to places like DWI/Digitalrev etc eBay stores. If you look in the Direct Import FAQ, although it looks like JB's standard warranty policy applies to these imports, it states in the fine print:

Please also note that, if you are entitled to a repair or replacement product, repairs are likely to be carried out, and replacements will be sourced from, overseas.

I'd still prefer to buy my gear from DWI though as they ship VERY fast via Fedex (5D Mark II from HK to Perth in 2 days from payment!), and they under-declare goods to avoid import taxes/delays in customs - yes this is illegal but if you're buying gear worth $1500+ and get import taxed (approx 15% of the declared value), then the final cost in most cases comes very close to local stock prices and defeats the purpose of grey import).

JB FAQ appears to state that they will declare everything at full price so import tax for net purchases over $1000 is something that should be factored in.

Just some points to consider when weighing up between purchasing grey market through JB or your usual Hong Kong eBay stores :)

    • Even though the repairs are likely to be carried out OS, it shouldn't cost you any money to send it. JB are the importers and they sold it to you. You have statutory rights and warranties and JB would most likely be liable for those costs if there are defaults.

You could obviously still ask for a refund/store credit as well.

You would NOT get that if you buy from a seller overseas, eg, from eBay. You would have to deal with consumer affairs in say, Hong Kong, and good luck with that.

      • +1

I doubt JB are the importer - they'll be doing the ship-from-HK thing like everyone else so they can dodge GST unless it's over $1000, which means that as far as customs are concerned you're the importer.

That shouldn't change your consumer rights since the money changed hands in Australia between you and an Australian compan (IANAL).

    • From DWI website on Warranty:

"…Full warranty like you would have if you purchased from any other camera store / shop, so take the worry out of your shopping forget JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman, Bing Lee,….."

What does that mean? Does DWI provide a local Aus warranty?

Moreover, I noticed that Canon S95 is $314 (free shipping) on DWI website and it is $326 on DWI eBay store.

      • Final Value Fee's and Listing Fee's I would assume…

  • Just compare between DWI and JB, 1x Nikon 35mm 1.8G DX lens and 1x Nikon SB700 flash, just $14 more than DWI. I would rather go with JB as if there is a problem, I can bring to JB. Well done JB, it's about time.

    • I couldn't find the SB700 flash on JB online, just the SB400

Anyway DWI have the 35mm 1.8G + SB400 for $364 and free shipping
JB have it for $595 plus delivery ($244 lens/$249 flash)

how did you find JB to only be $14 more?

  • +7

Oh the horror. What will Jerry Harvey do now! Good work JB you've just upset a bunch of Hong Kong ebay merchants!

    • +1

I like to call him a 'Gerryatric' :) Get with the times grandpa, stop bitching and moaning about riding the backs of the working class…the internet is here, get used to it!

Congrats to JB for waking up to themselves…now…for their shoddy trade practices and age discrimination…

      • "now…for their shoddy trade practices and age discrimination…"
        Can you pls elaborate further?

        • JB refuse to accept Visa Debit cards from younger customers, especially around 16 years of age, well, they did when I was 16.

They also made me go back and forth between my house and their store about 10 times trying to diagnose a faulty car cd player they sold me and kept trying to tell me code '2345' or something along those lines was the FM frequency showing…yeah…thought FM only went from 88-108. Eventually got them to admit to it being faulty and only offered a replacement, not a refund like they are legally required to in queensland! That's why I refuse to shop there!

    • +3

+1 for upsetting Hong Kong ebay merchants!!!

  • Bravo!!!!!!! JB HiFI is a legend.

  • Need more x no. of lens, looks limited for the time being.. will wait for more :D

    • I am pending for 70-200mm F4.0!!!

  • Nice catch!

  • Does it come in long or short period of time? Nice deal. I just had a try on 60D and it was very good handling.

    Edit:
Offer Expires Wednesday 23rd Nov 2011 unless otherwise specified

  • +1

Interesting move, JB cannibalising their own retail stores? Oh well, more money in my pocket :)

    • Australian vs Import stock. Totally difference target Audiences.

Dumbass Re Re goes import/fake without Warranty
Cheapass Ozbargainer goes import with seller's warranty
Richass Ozbargainer goes Oz Street price with Official Warranty
Australian Richpocket goes Retail with Official Warranty

      • Yeah I know that, but would love to see the look on the sales staff face when someone comes in to demo a camera then they say they're not going to buy off them at $X amount more, but online from jb 'direct import'. \

Well I suppose they can be comforted that the money isn't going to a hk seller….I suppose…

        • JB staff don't work on commission, do they?

        • Don't think so…but stores would have sales targets?

        • +1

          they work on commission

        • ouch…

      • @Spawnpoint

"Cheapass Ozbargainer goes import with seller's warranty.
Richass Ozbargainer goes Oz Street price with Official Warranty"

Sorry for this noob question, but what's the difference between the two warranties? All i know is the Manufacturers warranty (usually 1-5 years i think) and the store's warranty cover ( i think it's about 12 months).

        • +1

Seller's warranty means repairs are done by unauthorised repairperson(prob ex-nikon repairman). If these guys stuff up they will use cheap/refurb parts and dodgy practices
Official warranty means that the phone goes directly to manufacturer(Nikon) and if they stuff up then you get a replacement.

        • Also I realised I have a typo

          "Totally different audiences"

        • You also said "phone" after official warranty, lol

        • haha thanks for that!

  • Thumbs up JB, nothing better than a little competition! :)

  • Does anyone know how the warranty works? Can we take it to a retail store if anything goes wrong? I couldn't seem to find the info in the fine print.

    • Manufacturers usually provide manufacturer's warranties for locally imported goods but may not do this for Direct Import products. In addition, manufacturer's locally licensed importers usually provide local support in the event of faulty goods such as a network of licensed local repair agents.

    • +3

Read the FAQ section on the JB Direct Import site. I already mentioned it above in my comment, but anyway here's what the warranty FAQ says:

Please also note that, if you are entitled to a repair or replacement product, repairs are likely to be carried out, and replacements will be sourced from, overseas.

I.e. If something goes wrong, you contact JB and they will tell you to drop it off/post it somewhere, and your item will get sent back to Hong Kong most likely, repaired there, then sent back to Australia. You'll possibly have to pay for shipping costs too. This is the same policy as most eBay merchants.

    • You can always get a Mack Warranty

  • "Offer Expires Wednesday 23rd Nov 2011 unless otherwise specified"

So are these specials or permanent prices?

  • I reckon when Gerry gets a whiff of this he is going to pull an Alan Joyce… Watch this space

    • -2

That's a pretty incorrect analogy. Joyce was fighting with the unions (and I believe rightly so), whereas this has nothing to do with unions.

  • so nobody are selling these cheaper than jb? guess jb you've done it again

  • hmmm is it me or can u only buy one item at a time?

cant order lens, flash, body and save on postage

    • Haven't tried myself, but it may be better in fact to split order, as you may be hit with GST if total value >$1000 in one shipment.

  • hope all electronics retailers in australia will follow this! sell greys only!
    what? only few lens?

  • I would say it is just a try to lower the regular prices from the manufacturers … when they do not agree to better prices JB might only grey import.
But good on them … might buy a new Canon lens … (ahhh … these things are still too expensive).

  • If only the gst threshold was $5000. Henry's in Canada is selling a brand new 5d Mark II for $1999 Canadian.

    • +1

DWI eBay shop is selling brand new 5D Mark II's for AUD$2008 incl free shipping. I bought 2 recently, got them both within 3 days via FedEx. Everything works fine and genuine, no problem with customs either since they declared them at $950 each haha.

      • Did u need to pay gst on top?

        • Nope, since they were declared as under $1000. Most times customs just wave everything through, but sometimes they do random checks and will hold your parcel in customs if they think the declaration on the package is dodgey. They'll ask you to send them your payment receipt (eg. scan of your bank statement for that item) and if it's over $1000 they'll tax you on the amount your payment receipt says.

  • From the link to store, Nikon d3100 showing up for $777, am I missing something?

  • While I welcome the pricing competition to help bring prices down, the way JB are doing it seems really amateurish, and more like they are playing the role of a broker than a retailer.
You "buy" the item on their website at the advertised price (it's actually just an expression of interest in buying). This "purchase" triggers them to contact their suppliers to see if they can actually supply at that price.
If the pricing is accepted, JB arrange delivery on your behalf from the real supplier of the item.
If they can't supply, you can option to wait a further 5 days for them to scramble around trying to find another supplier who can meet the pricing, or they just cancel your order.

So, they have no confirmed supplier to base their pricing on, no backup stock on hand anywhere o/s to sell you, and no idea whether they can actually get you the item or pricing they are advertising at all?

I think I'd prefer to pay the $10-$20 more from another importer who can actually supply something when I click "BUY ITEM" on their website.

  • Has anyone ordered anything from them yet?
I placed an order last Thursday using my cc details, but i haven't received any confirmation from them since.
I also sent them an email that night about it and they still have not replied.
Too bad there is no phone contact for online sales.

Just wondering if anyone else has ordered and received a confirmation email or not??

    • +1

I've ordered a nikon d3100 friday morning and received it monday before 10am. Got a few emails with invoice, payment confirmation and tracking number for fedex.they did come in as junk mail, have you checked that?

      • Thanks man.. yes they did come in junk mail. cheers.
        i ordered the 24-105L

    • Just received my Canon 24-105mm lens from Fedex, like you I did not get any confirmation emails or tracking number. So was very surprised when Fedex turned up.

  • JB Hifi have set themselves up to look inexpensive by having basic advertising campaigns, interesting staff and stores without the razzle dazzle but in fact they charge around the same as other compare electronic stores. Seriously go online if you don't like wasting money. I wanted a Cannon digital SLR and got a bargain from an overseas site and delivered in 5 days. Being from the US I needed to purchase a convertor which I paid $3 from eBay which is not too hard. Locally the same set up would have cost me around $1,500 compared to under $1k from online. I posted a topic on the below website and used the advice to save a bundle.

    http://www.onlineshopadvisor.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=15

Happy to buy local but only if the price compares, in the case of digital cameras the price delta is too significant to ignore.

  • Ordered a Canon 60D for a great price cheapest by about $30 bucks including delivery. Compared to amazon, DWI, citywide plus others. Three days and it was here. Quite impressed. By the way I paid with visa gold card which automatically extends manufacturers warranty by 12 months. Sweet!
