Sandwich press repair
Hi all,
I’ve got a Breville Maxi sandwich press which has stopped working - power light comes on but no heat. Unfortunately it’s out of warranty. Called up Breville care but their suggestion was buy a new one or get it professionally repaired (which may end up costing more than a new one!).
Does anyone know if it’s possible to DIY repair this appliance, or someplace where they don’t charge $100 just to have a look at it? I’ve taken a look at it and the only thing stopping a home repair is a set of screw design which I haven’t seen before and don’t have the tool for (screw top has a slit just like flat head, except a small middle part is filled-in, creating two slots on the sides).
Thanks
Yup, prefer to DIY repair if I can. Sometimes it’s a pity that an expensive piece of equipment could be rendered useless by a $0.10 component…
Screw/nut driver sets are commonly available with just about every driver invented by man - slot/philips/torx/etc/etc - try Dick Smith and Jaycar online sites, hardware stores and even “dollar” shops.

Thanks, will take a look. My only worry is that it’s a proprietary design.
I suspect what you’re describing uses a “spanner”, “spanner head”, or “spanner pin drive” bit driver…

I have one of these Breville units.
The three screws at the bottom, are as you describe. I can undo them using the bit set that is sold by Dick Smith in the 32 piece set ( I have the same set) as in teaearlgrey’s message above.Cat No. T4514
The bits look like they are also in the 41 piece set on sale for $9.95 Cat No. T4511
Happy tinkering….

That’s a weird looking screw top. Not sure about Breville, but I hate it when the manufacturer explicitly chose an uncommon design to stop DIY repairs…
At almost $100 for a new one I’ll be very tempted to open it up myself as well. Getting it repaired by someone else is definitely not worth the price, except if you know some mates who are good at this kind of things.
