  • This is a bargain….?

    • +17

bargain if you live on top of one. i.e the West Ryde store is located under an apartment block.

  • +7

Now people will be parking in the handicapped spots right outside the front door so they can sit in their cars and use the free wifi.

    • I think I saw a billboard on a tram stop that said it provided free wi-fi too. May have been a fanta billboard.

      • +1

There's a tram rolling around that has free wifi, used to be provided by ANZ, think another sponsor has picked it up now. Useless though, too slow to do anything.

        • +2

Some of the SMART buses in Melbourne have free wifi but it seems to work at dial-up speed.

  • Yeah.. I wouldnt really call this a 'bargain'…

also, what are the terms of use? link doesnt seem to mention anything

  • From the TOS:

To give everyone a chance to enjoy the service, Officeworks limits your internet connection time based on demand for the service. After a period of time has passed your device will be disconnected so others can gain access.

    • Doesn't sound like a great option for those living above.
    • Start buying network cards :>

      • Just change the MAC address and computer name if required.

      • +3

Well if you want to buy new network cards, at least you will only have to go downstairs to get some.

Cool, so I can use their wifi to get Internet acces, then search website (e.g. Staticice) and show the price to them on my phone finally do the price match…definitely bargain in a way..

But what's the point of providing wifi in OW though (aside from what I just said)? Cos its an extra service (regardless usefulness) without costing them much?

    • +2

It's to get you to stay, so you can drink in the heady atmosphere of your local officeworks - who needs to sit in a boring old cafe when you can be in Officeworks

      • I see….true that while the OW in QV doesn't have any "seating", some bigger one offer seats for you to comfortably wait for your print and other stuff….

Time to start a OW Cafe outdoor! lol…

    • +1

it probably cost them nothing, the store would have already had wireless(for POS, order guns) just keeps people in the little bit longer.

      • +1

but also means people can check prices online
        and price match etc

        • +2

so they price match something to beat a competitors price, their profits from 65% go down to 35%. they still get the sale, kept customer happy, win win?

        • I've done this on my android phone and they were happy to comply :-)

Directly this may not be a "bargain" but indirectly it is as it gives you the means to achieve a bargain!

    • +1

That's exactly my thought: Price matching.

I find I don't get good data reception on my phone in the bigger Officeworks, so this will be an alternative.

      • Same, i am with Three, i have absolute no reception in QV's officework.

But then, i just said "Can you please check this price on your PC for me? Just want to get a price match here"~then they are mostly happy to do so..

when free wifi first come out(every macdonalds for example) it was awesome, but with data plans bigger and bigger and getting cheaper, is the demand for free wifi increasing or decreasing now?

    • Demand would be increasing.

  • -2

Can't see this as a bargain - just a service.

    • +1

Plenty of places change for internet access. As someone who has just come back from overseas holiday, trust me, when you find free wifi it saves you a fortune and makes your day!

Maybe not a bargain to you, but to many it is.

      • -2

Maybe your right, but then again in Adelaide we get free wi-fi in the main shopping strip (Rundle Mall) and most cafes in the CBD. This just seems so 1990s to me and that's why I'm irate about it.

    • +5

      You're just irate.

  • This just seems a bit silly. What's the point of going into OW and standing in the aisles and geekin on yr phone or lappy for "free" net. I get it in Cafes, where u sit down etc.. but OW? Weird promo!! go figure…

    • There are chairs inside most OWs if you wish to show yourself. lol.

      • +2

lol…that's below my level of cheapness, to spend a spare hour or two hanging out in OW furniture section for free net! maybe i would have in 1996 ;-) i still reckon it's a dumb promo, but good luck to those keen ones!!

  • Great post but its not a bargain as per our guidelines. Its good information and belongs in the forums.

Which raises the point for many. You can save money by looking at bargains AND the FORUMS.

  • I have a dream.

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and lie out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men should have equal wi-fi access".

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of suburbia, the sons of former westies and the sons of former nerds will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood and surf the web.

I have a dream that our children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the size of their bandwidth, but by the content they download.

    I have a dream today!

Now all you have left is to get shot for your cause, and we'll all be better off in a few years. :D

Kevin - please go back to Queensland - you're ranting again….

      • Sure sounds like Kevin :-P

        • Just insert the following: "Working families…blah, blah…working families…blah, blah…working families" at random points throught the manifesto. Then we've got us a Kevin-fest! ;)

  • +5

I went out to my local Officeworks store at Oxley today for other reasons not just to do the following

Did a speed test and it seems pretty decent

    588.4kB/s Down 93.4kB/s Up 223ms Ping

    • +1

Gotta love a man that posts actual details! not random feelings :)

    • +1

i cant play counterstrike with 223ms ping!

  • not sure about wifi, but my local Officeworks has a couple of computers with web access and free (albeit crappy) coffee
