BACK AGAIN - Vodafone Pocket Wi-Fi *2* Pre-Paid BroadBand - $39.50 Free Postage (Normally $79)

380

Hi, This is my first post. Please feel free to burn me ;)

Credits go to 'netsurfer' who I stole the item description from the last time this deal was up. Even better this one includes free shipping.

Enjoy.

Dick Smith is offering 50% off for the new Vodafone Pocket Wifi 2. Pocket Wifi 2 supports 2100, 900 and 850 mhz - all 3 UMTS bands used in Australia. Wireless N support according to the specs. It looks like DSE stores start to have them in stock. You can also buy one from DSE online store, free postage.

The modem appears to be a Huawei E585u-82. It most certainly uses a newer version of firmware than E585 and later versions of E585 (V1) are harder to unlock for free so E585u-82 will be even harder.

Official unlock from Vodafone - $50. After 6 months, the fee may drop to $25. Online unlock may get additional discount. However, unlock Web site does not seem to have the IMEIs and unlock codes yet.

Existing Vodafone postpaid mobile customers might want to consider the $10 per month offer (pointed out by kirynflare and thanks dy4me for the link):
http://www.vodafone.com.au/personal/plans/bundles/index.htm?…
For a postpaid pocket wifi, Vodafone generally unlock the device for free.

Pocket Wifi 2 uses the same battery as the Pocket Wifi 1. Even though the box says it supports wireless N, I am only able to get about 65Mbps connection (and it is 1T1R so it means it is 150Mbps at best in theory).

  • you might get cheaper through vodafone website.

    • $71 on Vodafone site.
And good to see they update their site often- "10% Off Prepaid Modems. Online only. Ends 30/11/2011** RRP $79. Save $8." Or is it really $79?? :)
      Isnt it 2012 already?

put "ozbargain" code when checkout. should get half price. Its $35.50 and even cheaper than DS. Free delivery too. enjoy!

        • +5

I have this habit of trying 'ozbargain' as a code every time on any website

        • works well can use starthere.com.au for additional 10% rebate

  • Does this come with any data or am i better off to get the Auspost one for $49 with 3gigs for 3 months?

    • +1

AusPost is the wifi 1 version. your better off with this.

      • Wifi 1 can be unlocked free tho this cannot

        • maybe not for now.

        • I bought a WiFi2 last time it was half price, never recharged and unlocked for free after making a request for an unlock code on the unlock website.
          YMMV of course.

        • +1

But, if you unlock it Wifi1 does not support 3G 850MHz (Vodafone/Telstra) so you'd only really want to be using it with Optus.

    • Yes, 3gb

    • Think the Aussie Post deal is 6GB for 90 days

  • +2

My friend was gonna buy Voda Pocket Wifi but then the network coverage is so shit there. Ended up buying Telstra.
Good price though. and might wanna check the network coverage before buying.

  • +1

Do I need this? I have an iPhone 4 with 2GB/month included on Telstra. That can be used for the same purpose via personal hotspot?

    • +4

Did you just answer your own question?

      • +1

Only if I'm correct…I haven't used personal hotspot but am aware of the functionality. I plan to take a beach holiday and work remotely for a week - therefore want to make sure I'm covered.

        • +5

You will be covered with Telstra.
You will be coverless with Voda.

        • +3

I regularly do what you want to - use my iPhone hotspot (but with voda rather than Telstra), so you should be fine.

        • Thanks seanbsydney.

(didn't take too long for a helpful response!!).

Like the older usb modems, can this be easily unlocked on a free Huawei IMEI unlock site? How about buying an unlock code off ebay for a few bucks?

    • I unlocked mine (bought in a previous half price sale in August) free from the Vodafone site..
I had to put in a request, but a few days after, the request was processed and I was able to unlock.

      my bad ;)

  • +4

    For people seeking to unlock.

  • I bought one a few months ago. Used it for the first time a few days ago because my landline had a fault so lost internet. Really handy to have this as a backup. Got 3gb for 30 days.

Works ok. Battery life is short. Need to switch off device when not in use to prolong battery usage.

30 days to use is too short. I only needed it for 3 days until Telstra fixed my line. Would have been useful if usage over a longer time was offered for the occasional user.

attempted to unlock using DC-unlocker and Revskills… Didn't work at all..

    • got mine and my fren unlock from DC unlocker last week, it takes a bit long - 5 seconds to unlock
u need to upgrade to latest software

      • I unlocked mine with dc unlocker now using Telstra prepaid

      • do you have the link for the firmware?

  • +2

Was thinking about posting it, but did not get around to it.

    Updates:

    • ozbargain code still works on Vodafone online site (as pointed out johndoe123) and is a bit cheaper, but Vodafone may take 2-3 days to process your order.
    • The DSE deal is available in store also.
    • Try Vodafone unlock site. Sometimes you can get a free unlock code.
    • DCUnlocker works with the model.

    might be off topic!!!
When Vodafone had it for $39.xx 5 mths(approx.) ago! I bought this modem with 3GB + ~2GB(if i activate before November 2011) through moneybackco.com.au to get 10% cash back! But after i placed the order it(moneybackco.com.au) showed $84 cash-back (supposed to be post-paid's cash-back). Wasn't sure if I would get $84 once they start processing, but everything went through and i got $84 back(late december) for spending $39!! It was like free money + modem + 3GB date.

Did not post back then, coz wasn't sure if they would honor! :p

    • Lol you did well.

    • :o

you should of posted this trick on ozbargain!

      • No coz then it would be ozbargained and they would realize their mistake and fix it. Then no-one would have got it

      • I was bit sceptic till I got the money in my account!
But as mentioned earlier "ozbargain code still works on Vodafone online site(as pointed out johndoe123)" you can get it for $35 and try your luck through starthere.com.au(used to be moneybackco.com.au).

I'm still not confident enough to try this again since I already have one of these!

  • AusPost is the wifi 1 version.

    Can anyone confirm this?

It's good to hear that DC inlocker is now working for these.

    • You are better off with wifi 2. Wifi 2 supports 850Mhz (NextG) and has 1T1R wireless N (150Mbps - I generally prefer not to call 1T1R Wireless N, but it is still better than wireless G I guess). Unlocking the newer version of wifi 1 for free is harder. DCUnlock price for both models is the same I think.

You could get the unlock code for Wifi 2 free (it is pretty much luck of the draw). I reckon Voda should give free unlock code for these pocket wifi modems because Tel$tra is giving the unlock code for free for their pocket wifi modems.

  • AusPost was wifi2 prepaid data plus, purchased as gift last week and help them set it up.
Didn't try unlocking it. Will do try after the 90days if they ain't happy with voda.

    • +1

I can confirm Auspost offer. Just bought a WiFi2 with 6Gb and 90 days data expiry for ~$50. Sounds like a more flexible offer due to 90 days. Definitely a ver2 modem so cannot unlock this firmware with DC Unlocker (as in free utility for Ver1 not the website paid in EUR). As suggested elsewhere put in a request on Voda website for unlock code if not yet available. I have done that before with another Ver2 and it worked.

      • Which post office ?

    • Yup, bought the auspost version last week and it was Pocket Wifi 2 for $49.95, came with 6GB and 90 days expiry. Haven't even activated it yet.

      • Thanks guys, was fairly sure it was probably the wifi 2 rather than wifi 1. It's not a bad buy for those wanting a bit longer expiry and more data than the voda online offer.

  • so it costs 10 euro to unlock from DC Unlocker?

    • Here's DC Unlocker price list

      http://www.dc-unlocker.com/buy/user_prices

      It's 10 Euro for this (E585U-82)

      • What's the conversion rate on this? Might still work out cheaper through the 007 dude referred to in the other thread. He's done two of these for us @ $15 now, and you usually have your code within a couple of days.

  • Hi everyone, I just ordered one from Vodafone.com.au for $35.50 awesome price. Just wondering whether someone knows how the delivery goes. Cause I am not home most of the time and apparently they will not deliver at my University address. If I am not mistaken Vodafone uses AAE, do they leave the package at the local post office if they dont find me home??

    • If I can remember correctly they leave it at the closest Australia Post outlet and leave you a note. I think it was them that do that, not 100% sure. Might want to call them to double check.

      • thanks for your reply. I called Vodafone they said they will leave it at the local post office. But I can never trust these call centre people :). Thanks again.

  • Note to those who use Opera;

DO NOT USE OPERA TO COMPLETE ANY TRANSACTION ON DSE WEBSITE Use Safari/IE/FFox.

My c/c got charged - but the website failed to jump to the confirmation page, instead got to a 404 type handler. Had not received any confirmation email from DSE as well.

    • Note to those who use Opera - DO NOT USE OPERA!

Purchased last night, unlocked with DC Unlocker this morning, setup new APN for Telstra.Internet, $420 solution from Telstra for only $52 when you know how, Thanks once again OzBargain.

  • Thanks Dannyhc - I also bought the same thing and unlocked sith DC Unlocker and it works a treat.

Best thing about it - no need to install software everything is web based (internal server) and once it is set up no software required for dialling either.

  • Can anyone try using the OZBARGAIN/HALFOFF/WHISTLEOUT code on the prepaid PocketWifi2?

It doesnt seem to work for me anymore :(

    Thanks
