great well done, jb reduce their price to $426 to match apple store, but DSE beat it, nice deal..

  • how about from kogan shopsquare oo etc etc?

    • +4

The grey importer would take some time to adjust to the new price I think. iPad 2 16GB Wi-Fi is now HKD$3,088 (~AUD$377) on Apple HK, so it's just a matter of time before they Kogan/SS/OO drop their price here.

  • Very good price, can you match price with good guys and get 10% off?

    • Just called bankstown and auburn GG… nope

  • I want an ipod touch ! when does the price drop for that one ?

      • -4

personally iOS is ok for a music player…as a smartphone its a bit too simplistic

        • -8

Ryang, do you honesty think saying things like that make you cool?

      • simplistic == it works

It's a phone. It should be simple.

        • +2

"It just works" claimed by apple seems to imply that there are no problems with iPhones. As with anything in this world, there is always something wrong with everything.

My android phone works too, and sure there are things wrong with it, but as a personal preference, I just like more functionality and customisation rather than simplicity

      • +1

iPod Touch is a cool device on it's own… a good music player, app device, incredible battery life etc… for a fraction of the cost of an iPhone. The reality is, you can still pair with a cool gadgety Android / Windows Phone / <insert competitor here> and tether to an iPod Touch and have the best of two marketplaces.

Not that I own an iPod Touch (as I appear to be in the small minority who love Zune), but if my Windows Phone wasn't the only device I'd ever need, the appeal is definitely there for a high capacity, super-slim standalone music player if you like the whole Apple ecosystem. In fact, I was considering an iPod Touch 4 at the time and pair that with a Droid X back about 18 months ago before Windows Phone arrived.

        • You hit the nail on the head. the ipod touch is great with an android phone. Battery is amazing if you set it right, and its reliable as anything. If i didnt buy an ipad 2 i would still carry it with me everyday.

September seems to be when they update the ipods

  • Nice price with wishlist gift card 10% and woolies staff card

    • +2

How did you get wishlist giftcard? which website give 10% off gift card?

    • How? Checked this website called wishlist they are selling gift card for extra 10%…

      • Thanks Mate. :)

      • +3

The wishlist gift card from the wishlist site (http://www.wishlist.com.au) appears to be different to the Woolworths Wish gift cards that can be used at DSE. Although, the ones with 10% extra (e.g. GG) seem to mean you pay 10% more, not get 10% more…?

  • +1

probably need to go to a large DickSmith in the short term. I dont think any small/medium size stores have stock. (All models)

    • For the most part, only large Dick Smiths stock the iPad anyway

      • +2

in QLD you'll find about 3 Large format stores.

20/30+ QLD stores stock the ipad. (regularly)

But stock has been moved to the large format stores in the short-term. So if the store had ipads last week it might not this week.

        • Fair enough, I'm in Sydney and just assumed it would be the same nationwide. My bad.

    • I just checked on stock levels from their website, and even some of the larger stores are now out of stock.

  • +4

wow, lucky I sold mine yesterday. I got $400 for it, brand new though.

    • I sold my 7 month old one yesterday, 16GB wifi and got $360, not too bad.

  • Good thing I sold my 6 month old 16gb wifi one for $400 last week too

  • price matched with JB HI-FI

    • does anyone price beat?

      • officeworks! :D

        • i bought it already from jb ..can i ask them to pricematch

        • OW does not sell iPads (only other Apple products) -at least not the store I called.

  • +1

Now, when will the sales on the 32 and 64GB models start?

  • +1

There won't be any sales for the higher models, as apple stopped production for those..so there is no new ipad2 32 or 64gb ones

    • +1

Do you really think all the old stock will just disappear?

      • I think he means Apple-invoked sales. This price drop is because Apple dropped their price. There's nothing compelling stores to drop their prices unless they have massive stock quantities for the 32GB/64GB model.

  • Anyone price match? beat? what about JB? good guys? HN?

    • +2

david jones and myer should price match.

      • DJs should and will price match.

        • Just picked up one from djs. happily matched it.

      • Myer Sydney city refused to price match when i checked this afternoon

    • I just went to good guys. They said they can't do 399 yet because apple didn't give them the GO yet. Probably tomorrow
Bought at dose macarthur square. No problem at all. Look like quite a few in stock

  • +2

    All of them are discounted wifi 32gb $499, 64gb $599 at Dick Smith with 3G 16gb $549 32gb $499 64gb $749

    • Do you mean $599 (not $499) for the 32GB 3G model?

      • +1

        Yes sorry typo

  • +12

I'm surprised no one said "Nah its not worth it, wait for ipad 4"

    • +4

      4S

  • Going buy this pricing they may possibly list the new ipad at $499.

    • +2

It's listed at $539, should be cheaper IMO

  • are they going to keep the price of the 16gb wifi ipad 2 at 399 from now on or is this just a temporary sale?

apple did state they would continue to sell the ipad 2

  • Was just in DSE store Greensborough, lack of any displayed price I just walked out.

    • +3

      You showed them!

  • +4

Hopefully this will put some pressure on retailers to discount Android tabs too.

    JB Hifi:
    Apple iPad 2 16GB wifi $426
    Acer Iconia A100 $444

    LOL

    • Unfortunately, there is a lot more "variance" in non-Apple items, as the margins for retailers are more flexible.

Basically, if a retail can make more money of an Android tablet, they'll try to.

    • Yep, they'll have to give away last generation's Android tabs now rubs hands.

    • -3

Android devices have a profit margin on them set by Acer, Samsung etc… to cover their time in building them. Android users statistically are less likely to purchase apps, much less do the OEMs make money from the Marketplace. So what you have is a device that costs, say $330 to make, +30% for their time leaves you with a sub-$400 device before the retailers themselves pick a device up and add their margin to it.

Apple on the other hand need only charge for the hardware because they make an incredible amount from the Apps that all profits for them go back to. By all profits, I ofcourse mean the 30% they make off each sale. This, and a tightly controlled margin scheme is why you don't see too many Android Tablets go on sale.

  • -4

so any idea how much the new ipad 3 will cost?

if it is only $100 more then just get that instead

also is the asus prime better?

    • Just read mate, or have a quick Google.
$539 for the base 16gb wifi iPad.

      • -1

        thanks
        so only $140 more

and it would have a better resale value next year…

and it would run games, apps better as well, cos it has more ram and better gpu, cpu for only $140 more..

so better to go for the ipad 3?

        • +3

No that sounds like a pretty awful deal man. You should wait for iPad 4. I can guarantee that it'll be $140 cheaper than iPad 3 and it will have 8x more RAM, and an even better gpu and cpu. Best part? It'll be $140+140=$280 dollars cheaper than iPad 2 so save your money.

        • -1

Wait for the iPad 5 in 2015. Or get the Asus Transformer now.

    • 539 i believe

    • +2

yes, prime is better. but they are two different systems.

      • yes
        I know…

it is a bit hard to decide though

apple has more apps, gets the apps first before android..
android has devices like the prime etc..which has quad core cpu, better camera etc..

btw does apple have the best gpu? quad core..
is there a version 2 of the asus prime? I heard there was some issue with the first version?

Wish apple had done these though
-better front camera, vga is shit..Sometimes we want to take self portrait etc… it would be good to get a higher res..
        -quad core cpu..
        -siri

        • bla bla bla. Do some research mate, we aren't your personal lackeys.

        • +1

Simple. If this is your first ipad, get the latest one. A little extra money but its worth it for re sale value and the extra features. If you're upgrading from the ipad2 dont bother. Upgrading from ipad 1? Yes its worth it.

  • +2

Just price matched at jbhifi heidelburg, vic. 16gb for $399,Easy. Going oversease on end of the month, so claim gst nd final price $360 :)

    • Out of curiosity what iOS version did it come with? 5.01 or 5.1?

  • ordered 16G wifi white "the new iPad…." this morning~

  • Long shot question:

If the ipad battery is cactus/dead/completely stuffed/needs replacing, can an ipad be used from external power supply, maybe the charger/adapter?

Or a correct voltage power supply. etc.

    Or is it 100% cactus?

    thank you

    • if the ipad battery is cactus/dead your best bet is to get apple to replace it for you (at a charge).

If you have other problems with the unit (ie it is not just the battery) then get apple to do an "out of warranty replacement" (also at a charge)

  • -1

You would have to be on drugs - strong drugs - to buy the ipad 2 now.

Unless you get it completely free, OBVIOUSLY buy the new ipad.

    • I don't think so, ipad2 for $360, I think its a good buy, I don't feel spending another $140 for the next gen as the benefits are only the hidef and camera. Also I think the next version I mean ipad4 will have somerthing better

    • Would buy it for $200 but I don't know about $400.

      • you can't even get second hand ipad1 for that price, people are panic always if there is a new version out their, without even compare the benefits..

    • Agree, I loved my Ipad2 but the screen is woeful. If you are going to buy a tablet, HD all the way in this day and age.

  • BIGW are $1 cheaper than DSE on all prices.

Most BigW stores are open until 9pm tonight.

    • ???
      big w have them for like $500+ 16gb wifi…

      • Bigw will match or beat prices, just go to the shop and ask them

  • you say big w price is $398?

  • dupe

  • Brought 4 days ago at dick smith for $499 , shocked for sudden price drop, went to same store and got refund $100 today lucky enough to get the same deal as today….

  • +1

why would you buy one when you know ipad 3 is coming?

    • +3

Because the only difference is the graphics and 5MP camera. and the new one is more thicker and heavy. My next upgrade will be ipad4 or 5 not the ipad3. The basic use of the tablet is to browse internet, and the current specs are more than enough to do those.

      • +2

100% agree. Me and my HP touchPad are right there with you.

        • my point was, why would you buy it before it comes out, ipad 2 price will drop, everyone knows that

        • Actually if last years iPad1 to iPad2 transition is anything to go buy, old stock will be sold out before the new one is released.

    • +2

Exactly, for 100 bucks more you can get:

      • 4x Screen Resolution
      • Double RAM
      • 4-core GPU (4x Perf)
      • Better CPU
      • At least, one extra year of updates
      • 4x better camera

To each, his own - but still worth the 100 bucks.

      • Actually, cpu is the same as ipad 2. But still worth the extra $100

      • Hope I'm not being rude but:

        Double RAM

Source? Please don't say Gizmodo. They speculate FAR more than report.

        4-core GPU (4x Perf)

4xPerf of what, iPad 1? Again, source?

I'm not trying to discredit the performance gains of the iPad 3 but don't throw out specs and quote random performance figures. Also, the iPad 2 is still a very good buy for a tablet especially if you're buying it for someone else, then a 140 bucks makes all the difference.

        • Apple's new iPad makes the leap to 1GB of RAM (The Verge)
          http://www.theverge.com/2012/3/7/2853448/sources-apple-new-i…

Nvidia will put Apple's A5X claims to the test, says it's 'pleased' by Tegra 3 comparison (The Verge)
          http://www.theverge.com/2012/3/7/2853089/nvidia-apple-a5x-te…

          Hope that helps..

        • Sources have informed us that Apple's latest has indeed received an upgrade in that area as well, and will ship with 1GB of RAM — double that of its predecessor.

Yeap. My sources have informed me that Apple's latest has indeed received an upgrade to the keyboard - it's totally holographic.

The Verge is more reliable than, say, Gizmodo but that's also speculation. Until iFixit tears it down, no one but Apple knows how much RAM is in the new iPad. The "sources" said the same thing about iPad 2 (1GB RAM).

The benchmarks shown in a marketing presentation are not valid at all. Again, it's like Mozilla saying Firefox is 10x faster than Chrome when results prove otherwise. Of course Mozilla will say that. Until someone at AnandTech or a similarly reputable site does some extensive testing, your claims along with The Verge's are doubtable and frankly spread misinformation.

        • +3

Hmm, seems like you are not easily persuaded. Oky, here is a quote from Mike Capps of Infinity Blade Dungeons fame (which was demoed on stage during Apple's keynote yesterday):

"The quad core [processor] makes a big difference in terms of what we can draw. When you think about it, they increased the resolution of the screen by a factor of four and they doubled the graphics performance, that wouldn't make you think, Great, we've got tons of extra graphics performance. But they increased the memory as well and that made a huge difference. One: we all have to share the memory with all the other apps that are running. And two: it really let us put in higher resolution textures, which aren't much harder to draw. We don't need a processor for that. But they take up a ton of space. Infinity Blade 2 takes up like 700 megs or something like that, it's a big game. And now, to draw something with four times resolution, you need it even more. Having more memory has been a real win for us."

Surely, he knows what he is talking about.
