All of my last 3 camera purchases have used AA batteries (it was a key factor in choosing them). (Non-rechargeables) are easy to source in an emergency. Rechargeable replacements are easy to source (Eneloops etc). You can reuse your existing charger (assuming you already have AAs and a good quality charger). Good quality batteries allow taking good number of pictures (e.g. http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/A720IS/A720ISA6.HTM for 2 AAs). AAs give the camera a nice heft in your hand (making it easier to keep the camera stable).
Now they aren't great for everyone (they generally make the camera larger - can't be used in slimline cameras etc).
