The Bike Lift is the absolute best way to store your bike for 2 great reasons:
- It uses space you normally couldn’t use
- It keeps your bike 100% safe and out of harms way
Ingenious Design Lightens Load, Locks Bike In Place
The Bike Lift has been specially engineered to lift even heavy bikes with ease – each pull of the rope and the bike is safely locked in place.

+4 votesI've got (several of) both (same models, bought from different sources). The T7 one, with the pulleys mounted on a bar that you attach to the ceiling - is far better - the hooks in particular. You have to beat and bend and kludge the (crappy sheetmetal) hooks of this "locking" hoist into a shape that is capable of holding a bike. Assuming they're still using the same rope as mine, it's awful and you'll probably want to replace it.
The lock isn't very useful. Mostly, it just means you have to be careful which angle you hold the rope to get your bike down, because otherwise the lock keeps jamming and the bike doesn't come down. I wouldn't trust the lock to hold my bike up long-term (it just works by jamming the rope), so you still have to fasten the rope to the wall somehow… even if you didn't, you'd end up with a loose rope dangling from the ceiling under your bike.
All that said… I paid a lot more than $5 (+shipping) for mine, and for the money, they do a pretty good job.
+7 votesMight want to look at this item as well, it didnt add any cost to my shipping order.

shipped to WA $29.76 great deal
justhooked on 06/07/2012 - 14:35 ¶From the manufactures web site
And the solid steel construction means the lift has a capacity of a 50lb bike
50 pounds = 22.6796185 kilogramsDouble checked and ski's are only 16kg so should be ok

Anything taller than a bike!
Depends how high you need your bikes out of the way. You should be able to hoist them to within about 10cm of the ceiling, so however tall your handlebars and seat are, plus 10cm, plus however much space you want underneath.
I have half a dozen of these hanging bikes from my shed roof. It's a tall shed with 9' walls plus the pitch of the roof. Once they're up, I can walk and work underneath them as if they weren't there.

You could ask your landlord if they're ok with you installing them if you leave them when the tenancy ends, at $5 each you're not leaving a big ticket item behind. I've had tenants make requests like this & it's never been an issue for me, well as long as they don't completely muff the installation! ;)
+2 votesscubacoles on 06/07/2012 - 15:17 ¶Completely different scenarios
Hooks - Great if you have a wall to put hooks into, but useless/ difficult if you are wanting to hang bikes from the ceiling
Hoist - Useless if you want to hang bikes from a wall but great if you have a ceiling/joist to hang a bike from…
+1 votescubacoles on 06/07/2012 - 16:24 ¶Pergolas, Sheds and carports don't have too many though… (I wouldn't try putting hooks through my shed to hold a bike anyway!)
Guess where bikes are most commonly stored?
+1 votephobaphobic on 06/07/2012 - 16:17 ¶Australian houses are uniquely unsuited for this contraption.
+1 voteThe standard ceiling house in a modern Australian home is 2.4M. If your bike is 1M tall, you'd have to be 1.4M tall to walk underneath It.
So Phobaphobic is correct.
I bought a twin pack of these on ebay for $30ish delivered.
I mounted mine in the garage, and our family are all < 1.7M. We can all walk underneath the bike, but only just. I'm quite happy with mine.
If you have a bike that you don't use more than once a week, and have a good place to mount it, then grab one. (For me the rope system is too troublesome for something I'd have to use twice a day) I keep my daily rider leant up against a bench.

The standard ceiling house in a modern Australian home is 2.4M.
That's only the current minimum standard for a habitable room, but have you thought about the many older style homes with 10' or higher ceilings??? I think you'd agree that like you, most people will be using these in sheds & garages with much higher ceilings than 2.4m anyway dude…it's a bike, not living room furniture!
That said, as others have noted you are not constrained to either vertical mounting or use solely for bicycles; therefore, to say these devices are "uniquely unsuited" is factually incorrect. Sorry. ;)
+3 voteslang_tu_syd on 06/07/2012 - 16:56 ¶Not sure why i bought 4 when i only have 1 folding bike. Oh well, maybe use them to threaten to hang the kids when they misbehave (when the wife is not around of course). A voice inside my head keep telling me that i will find some use for them in the future. Gotta admit the problem is getting worse now…

Anyone bought from Cellbikes before that can advise? It says at the checkout that it has to be signed by you.

So no one else but you can sign for it? plus they won't leave it at your nearest post office? Is that correct? Such a shame if that is the case. Losing many targets like myself out there.
Kambo_Rambo on 06/07/2012 - 19:17 ¶No this is standard, it means that someone (anyone) has to be home otherwise you will get carded.
SteveAndBelle on 10/07/2012 - 20:29 ¶My four arrived this morning! Excellent service CellBikes, thanks.
