Brisbane OzBargainers Meetup - CONFIRMED Friday 19 October
UPDATE 18/10
A few spots have freed up due to late cancellations. If there's anyone wanting to take their place PM me your full name and mobile number - 3 spots confirmed + a couple more potentially available at the moment. #
UPDATE 2/10:
The cap of 40 has been reached. Please see quop's comment.
UPDATE 22 September
A few more people now know about this thanks to a notice on the OzBargain home page. The registration tally stands at 5 yes and 4 maybe - keep 'em coming!
UPDATE 11 September[Ref] — Nothing's changed, really. Registration has been open for a month and the RSVP tally still stands at 4. The event is about another month away, so hopefully a few more people can come/RSVP by then.
UPDATE 10 August — a booking has been made for 7:30pm Friday 19th October, the venue is the L'Academie Hotel, using the OurDeal deal (details here).
This event will be capped at 40 people. To attend, you must register. To register, PM me the following details:
- your real name
- your contact mobile number
To enforce the cap/prevent gatecrashers, entry to this event will be by showing:
- a confirmation SMS that I will send to your mobile at some later stage
- photo ID matching your real name
I will update on the progress of registrations in due course.
Update 25 July:
I have removed the trailing question mark from the thread title as this meet is now confirmed, as per scotty's comment. Please read that and my followup.
The original post is retained below for context.
Spurred on by some comments in this thread, I'm just tossing up the idea of having a meet up for Brisbane based OzBargainers, and am wondering if and how many others would be keen to meet in real life?
I've actually thought about the idea before, but don't know if anything of the sort has been considered or done before. Anyway the idea is that having some real life contact (even if it's just limited to this one meeting) might help to foster a better sense of community amongst us, which could make things easier when organising group buys, sharing deals, or even just being more willing to give each other the benefit of the doubt when interacting in deal & forum comments etc.
We could use the deal linked above… it would be $10 per head if we had 23 people. That would require someone to buy the deal first and trust/hope others will come. I guess we could really meet anywhere though, eg book a table at a restaurant somewhere and everyone split the bill.
Ok over to you for thoughts/comments etc.

+7 votesIf the deal is genuine (we all know that Group Buys deals MUST be genuine, RIGHT?!!), someone in Brizzy is willing to organise it, and the number can be reasonably capped — I am happy to chip in and call it an OzBargain event.
The reason why it needs to be capped is that I don't want hundreds of QldBargainers crashing at the venue to have one bite each of the spring rolls — not to mention troubles the venue is going to have and no other venues are going to host OzBargainer meetup again in the future.

@stewballs: true that but there's also an additional $30 charge for numbers above 50. anyway i'm not sure if there'd even be 4 people, let alone 40, so 2 vouchers might be getting a bit optimistic.
@monkeycheese: good point :) would probably have to be either something that's fixed cost (eg buffet or set menu) or a place where people can buy and pay for their own food (eg like the setup at jo jo's in town).
@scotty: thanks for the thought! i'd be willing to organise something small scale/casual like - wasn't really aiming for an "official" ozbargain event, more like a gathering of ozbargainers who decided to get together. definitely wouldn't want to so anything that would cause trouble for ozbargain. maybe you could pay for monkeycheese's share ;)
@jayteewoofed: looks like it's just you and me at the moment! oh and antman76… and maybe monkeycheese.

Yeah not much response yet…
What about say, I am offering to pay 1/2 the cost ($115) so anyone going just need to split the rest? Only 2 days left so "hurry hurry hurry!" </sales pitch>
For example, people register interests here - @quop will collect names. If enough turn out (20?) then he will buy the coupon from OurDeal.com.au first and book the time, and I will EFT/PayPal him 1/2 the amount. Rest of you will split and pay him on the day?
Or maybe there are better way to organise this?

Obviously someone needs to commit on behalf of the group, but I dont see that being the problem.
The irony might be ozbargainer's parting with their money. Or people may not have seen this thread. I only spotted it late last night. Think of this comment as a bump for the Brissie members…
But we all know the rule. Gotta spend money to save money. And even better nobody can neg your comments face to face lol
Come on Brisbanites!

someone needs to commit on behalf of the group, but I dont see that being the problem.
are you willing to be the one? :)
i'm happy to give scotty's idea a run - if sufficient numbers of people are willing to come, and register their interest by 9pm this tuesday 24/07 by way of reply to this comment, i'll buy the voucher. to make it an easier target to hit, i'll set the minimum number required at 10 other people ie including myself, that's 11 people to cover $114 costs after scotty's subsidy, or $10 per head (i'll cover the $4 remainder). obviously if more people come, the per head cost drops.
so, let's see how we go over the next 48 hours (see also updated OP above).
+1 votepianissimo on 24/07/2012 - 15:19 ¶Lol @ t_c. I'd go (even without a freebie)if I was in Brissie :)
Quop: Can you post it as a deal or something so that ppl will see it? I remember scotty was getting no hits on his charity giving forum post until he stuck it on the front page. Maybe you should have a word with your sponsor ;-)

it wouldn't qualify as a deal / i can't be bothered attracting attention of neggers.
maybe it could go on the front page as some sort of announcement, but you'd want to be reasonably confident people would appreciate it being there, and at the moment i've not got that confidence. still, could be worth doing maybe down the track if there's more support for something like this.
bigosmallo on 25/07/2012 - 10:44 ¶Eh… I'd go if I was a little older. Being 19 I'm assuming most people at this meet up will be in their 20s, 30s and some in their 40s.

UPDATE 25 July — I've made some arrangement with @quop regarding to the Brisbane meetup. So we are basically having a go-ahead now, and he will work out a good date to get all the Brizzy OzBargainers together. I believe @quop would keep everyone updated. But still, express your interest in the comments.
+4 votesThanks scotty! Just to confirm some details, we are:
- Making use of the L'Academie deal, a voucher for which has been purchased.
- Subject to availability of dates, it will be held later in the year (pre-Christmas party?), on a Saturday during the lunch service timeslot (earliest start 11:30am, latest finish 5pm).
- FREE to join (thanks to some generous sponsorship).
- Capped at 40 people and subject to all the other terms & conditions of the deal we're using.
Next steps:
- I will choose a date and make a booking within the next few days to lock in the details. Let me know if you are definitely keen on coming and there are Saturday dates towards the end of the year that you cannot make - I'll try to accommodate (avoid these) where possible.
- I'll announce the date and come up with some sort of registration system.
- The rest of the details/logistics will follow in due course. At its most basic form we'll just get together in a room and chat amongst one another whilst munching on canapes and downing some drinks. Something more structured for part of the meet would probably be good, so let me know if you're keen to help out/be involved in organising something for the meet.
PS. if the end of the year is too far for any keen beans, I'm still happy to do a smaller (eg 3-4 people), unofficial meet if anyone is up for it. PM me with your preferred dates/times/locations, we can settle on something and then open it to any others who might want to join in a casual hangout.
+3 votesFirst meet at Red Rooster http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/75762
.. and preferably one right next to a Hungry Jacks http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/70320 ???

Well I'm happy to change the day/time of week if it would suit more people - would a Friday evening work for you jtin and altomic?
For everyone else who's saying yeah I'm interested but need to know the date first - this is your window of opportunity to influence the choice of date, so be specific in saying what you can or can't do, and I'll try to take it into account (probably won't be able to please everybody, but I'll try to accommodate as many requests as I can).
Let's limit the options to something in September (so we can have a bit of lead time) through to November (before things get too busy in December). I'll aim to make a decision/booking within the next week or so.

UPDATE 10 August - a booking has been made for 7:30pm Friday 19th October, the venue is the L'Academie Hotel, using the OurDeal deal (details here).

I was just buying a ticket at EventBrite, and thought maybe you can just use that website to organise this event. Looks like you just need to set a date, set the limit on the tickets, sell the tickets at $0 but require some kind of information so people are more accountable (rather than just buying but not showing up).

Thanks for the suggestion. Had used it before to register for an event but not for hosting one. Looks a bit more schmick than what I was planning :) But can't figure out a way to "limit" registrations to OzBargainers only… at the moment registering via OzB messaging is probably ok for the small scale and ensures that the request is coming from a registered ozbargainer. Might think about it some more/at least keep this option in mind for any future events.

A printout of a reply/confirmation e-mail maybe? If it's 40 people something old fashioned as a guest list might work, too?
Just a suggestion - if everyone else has phones by all means disregard me and my question.
I think it is pretty funny reading all of this - one would get the impression mobile phones have been around for 50 years and no one can remember how life was before they were everywhere. ;-)

Here in Perth (and I assume elsewhere), bars will give you a VIP room and free platters based on the number of people you have coming. There is a steakhouse located at the the Perth Parmelia Hilton that does this once a month for a group on Friday evenings. It's called the Adelphi. You would still want people to be accountable for showing up.
Be great to have one of these in Perth.
I have a scoopon voucher that I wasn't able to use for a function. It's for 40 people and includes someone who comes, cooks, cleans and serves finger food. No way I would be interested in organising the venue, but if someone else wanted to offer up a suitable venue, I'd donate it. Has to have a kitchen and a table as big as a trestle table. And a sink. Can be in someone's house.
I would not participate in any sort of cleanup whatsoever. The donation of the voucher would be my sole contribution. Can't be in a scary suburb.

UPDATE 19 August
Slight change to registration/entry requirements:
- if you do not have a mobile number, or if you prefer this option, I will accept a printout of the confirmation from ozbargain messaging (this should show your username, my username, and the message content).
The tally currently stands at 4.

Actually they all look remarkably, well, normal. Not what i'd anticipated of OB's…
Pumpkin_rrr on 03/11/2012 - 13:25 ¶Beautiful photos, good shot, good quality. What model of camera is that please?
Pumpkin_rrr on 03/11/2012 - 13:47 ¶Thanx issh, I am blinded by the many posts.

Could you imagine splitting a bill with OzBargainers? It would be a nightmare lol. It would be down to the cent!
Kudos for organizing something if you do tho :D
