Keep in mind that the $25 Google Play store credit End today.

    • do u still get the credit it u buy it today? it wont arrive till a while later right?

      • +1

I think it needs to be activated by today, so probably not

      • +1

Definitely no. You get it when you activate the device, not based on purchase date.

    • -3

In that case, I might wait for the next gen model if I've already missed a big incentive. Hopefully the next gen model will have the improvements people are asking for, such as SDcard slot or bigger internal memory.

      • Seriously, what do you want for $218.
The tablet is very good value at the moment, and this price is over $25 cheaper than others anyway!
eg. 16GB is $268 here, $296 from HN.
So you're effectively getting more than $25 play store credit.

        • -3

I didn't say it has to be $218.

I don't mind paying more. If I get more. But I don't. They don't offer a 32GB option, or a more expensive model with an SD card slot.

And I would never pay $296 for it. Not even with $25 credit. Why? Because it's been cheaper before. Given some time, it will go back to those prices. This is not the first, last, or only time it will be $268. Unless you urgently need it now (and I don't), you can wait.

        • +1

I think you can only hope for a 32 GB in the future. Google has already explained why they prefer not to have SD card slots so it's very unlikely that they'll include one in the future.

  • I have got 2 kids (4 and 6) who play with the ipad and now with my Motorola Xoom.

Would this be a better option for them or ipod touch? I know all the specs and size difference and I reckon this would be a better choice for them for what they do.

Also I suggested to the wifey a couple of Ainol as well since they look good and have the camera. Not buying anything until the end of the year so any input welcome.

I know this is not the thread for it maybe but just after some advice please

    K.

EDIT: I also bought a lot of apps and games from the last and the actual special. I just thought I would install the market and remove all other google apps so they cannot access my emails and stuffs. Safe enough? the kids are 4 and 6

    • +2

my kids (2,5,6) enjoy the size of the galaxy compared to the xoom and none of them bother with the iphone anymore unless we are out. I found it easy enough to just turn the wireless off on the tablets when the kids use it and there are no issues. Also loading all the games onto one screen and just letting them know to stay on that screen keeps them away from the email etc.

    • +5

With android, you can get an app like kids place. This will lock down the phone features and only you would be able to access full functionality

    • +2

I bought the Ainol Fire because at that time it was about half the price of a Nexus and its been great so far. Would recommend it. However 268$ is a really good price for the Nexus. An officeworks price match would bring down the gap between an Ainol and the Nexus even further.

    • +17

"Also I suggested to the wifey a couple of Ainol as well"

how did that work out…. they usually shoot that idea down pretty quick ;)

    • +14

you should buy them a tennis ball to play handball, chalk to play hopscotch and give them cardboard boxes to build a castle - they'll have loads of fun and save you a lot of money! lol

  • +1

pro: extremely good price for a good device
    con: no rear camera

Please asus put in the rear camera I will pay you extra $30-50.

    • +14

Not sure why you'd need one, it's a tablet, you've got a phone for a camera (presumably).

      • +3

it is for my 60 year old dad to play around who does not use a smart phone :)

      • +2

and I think some moments could be gone in seconds. eg when you play with your kids and want to take a photo. oops can't find my phone…

    • +21

      I definitely wouldn'y pay $30-$50 more.

Plus Asus realised how ridiculous people look when trying to take photos with tablets. (I'm looking at you iPad owners).

      • clearly you value picture quality more than convenience, some and quite a few out there value convenience more, you have to realise that :)

plus as long as the job is done (photo taken) I don't matter how ridiculous it LOOKS :)

        • +1

True, most people don't have a Samsung Galaxy S3 like me. Which is much easier to carry and takes much better photos.

But seeing as we're talking about luxury gadgets, why not just buy a phone with a good camera and a big screen? SGS2/3, Galaxy Note 1/2, HTC One X?

        • I hate to say this as I own one, and I know how poor it performs under low light, and its just an honest opinion of my own phone. Still love the other features.

    • +2

Just by looking at the votes shows why they don't put a camera on it. Very few people want it, not worth the extra dollars.

  • +2

Just bought one last week for 279 from them, havent received yet, should have wait longer I supposed…

    • Have not tried myself, but others have spoken about Kogan refunding difference if u recently bought product at higher price from them.

      • Yes, you can contact their relevant department/team and ask (nicely) for a refund for the price difference. I bought a Galaxy S3 from them a few days before they had a free shipping deal and they refunded the shipping costs.

        • Thanks, I might try that tonight…

    • Same and i still haven't got it, $279 is still a good price, shame we are losing on the $25 store credit :(

      • They haven't even sent mine yet and I bought it at the last sale :@. Pathetic!

I've got a Nexus bought from B&H a month ago for about the same $. I'd say this was one of the most productive tech purchase I've made. As a uni student I've now completely gone digital. Dropbox + ezPDF provides all my note taking needs with the cloud syncing with access pretty much anywhere I want. Got it rooted and bought a USB OTG cable for a buck on eBay and now I can share files with classmates with USB and even USB HDs. Having no cellular function battery life is incredible as well. If I use it constantly for 8+hrs doing various tasks I might get the batt down to less than 10%. One big plus of going digital is the ability to "find" in documents. All these perks without the bulk of the iPad. I can easily slide it in my lab coat pocket and I'm essentially carrying all my notes plus pdf texts around me during lab dissections and practicals.

tl;dr: Best Android experience I've had. Personally perfect for lectures. The screen could be just a bit bigger with the same small factor (ie: smaller bezel).

Bummer about the $25 credit ending today. In reply to above comment: You wont get the credit until you actually sign in on the device using your Google account. So no you most probably wont get the credit unless you can get in in your hands today.

    • Do you use a USB Keyboard whilst typing? Just wondering how good it is. I'm not at home at the moment and can't try it on my own Nexus 7. You just gave me motivation to use it for note taking etc.

      • Nah just a cheepo bluetooth keyboard from eBay. $15

        • Thanks

  • +4

OR you OW price match 5% today?
    $254?

    • Do they have 8gb version?

  • +6

Just priced match officeworks for 254.

    • does the $25 credit still work?

      • The terms and conditions read "by September 30, 2012" so that means if you get ur device today before midnight (11:59pm) and activate it, yes you will get the credit.

Might even be September 30th USA time because there are is specific Australian terms and conditions. So maybe if your device arrived Monday before around 5pm you might still get it.

        • the key word is activate it. which wont happen untill u get it 2 weeks later.

        • Yeah true.

Just FYI I can confirm just brought one from HN today ($296, but I had $250 in gift cards) and I got my $25 credit instantly once logged into my good play account.

    • officeworks price-match online stores now?

      • I believe they add the delivery fee on to the online price and match against that.

      • They pricematch online stores provided that they have stock. They also add any delivery fees on top of the online price and pricematch from there.

        • Yeah and they also check if it is Australian warranty plus back to base or back to store warranty. But yep they genuinely price beat..once they allowed me to use their own display computer to find a cheaper product… I did and and gladly pricebeat

    • Could you please post receipt?

  • How much better is this compared to say… Ainol Fire/Flame for ~$150?

    • Alot better lol

    • Compared to those Chinese branded tablets.. Nexus 7 is better in the following areas:

      • 16GB (or 8GB) completely available for application installation. Not the 1GB internal memory + 15GB internal SD rubbish
      • GPS built in (and it locks quite fast)
      • More reliable wifi (so you don't need to use wifi fixer app)
      • Jellybean support (though quite a lot of Chinese tablets also have JB as well)
      • Better built
      • Light sensor (auto brightness support)
      • $25 Google Play credit (ends 30/09/2012)
      • More apps run on Nexus 7 (esp. AU apps)
      • Near Field Communication (NFC)
      • Smart cover support (Google/Asus did not make this well known)

Fire/Flame (forgot the name) has Bluetooth (N7 has it too), which most of the other cheap tablets don't have.

  • +1

Apparently the rumor is that Google/Asus might slash down Nexus 7 prices soon ($99 for 8gb, $199 for 16). Since this is American prices, I assume Aussies will get it for $149 and $249. Not sure how true this is but, Kogan's sale makes it look like it might actually happen. http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20120926PD232.html

    • Hopefully a 3G/4G version will be released too!

      • +1

it's possble since Nook HD,Kindle HD and Ipad mini are just around the corner. Thought not available in Australia at the moment. Personally, 8GB with no micro SD expansion should be abandoned.

    • Engadget reports says it wont happen anytime soon.. i might be wrong?

    • I think the $99 rumor was debunked by Asus. look it up

      http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20120926PD231.html

    • Supply/demand/competition. There is NO WAY prices will drop half in the near future. They should drop a little with the $25 Play credit now expired, but Google has no reason in the near future to drop prices. Only when they release a new model, which shouldn't be soon given current supply/demand/competition, will prices drop further.

Guys, which officeworks did u buy from? Ive been told by 4 officeworks they dont pricematch kogan anymore

    • Victoria Yarraville …bought at 12:44 pm today.

    • East perth, western australia. they accept price matching

    • Why not? Haven't seen their price matching policy but does it allow them to not price match specific stores?

Maybe something to do with the grey import thing.

      • You should ask who from which OW price matched this deal. Apparently diff staff have their own price match policies. Get the right person at the right OW store is the key.

    • Just called Sydney OW clarence st they dont price match Kogan's nexus 7 it as it is imported.

      • +6

You are wrong. I just left OW Clarence st and got 16gb for $254.60 show them my receipt and get yours. Hope u could get it.
        This is my receipt
        http://i.imgur.com/F3StV.jpg

        • can i take this reciept to EB games and price match it ? my OW doesn't have it in stock

        • I don't know EB games does has price match policy but u can give a try.

        • They got an email from head office explaining the situation saying Kogan product is non Ausi (manufacturers) warranty hence they won't be doing it any more…. u lucky bugger.

    • Prospect, SA. They had two in stock.

Even better, I brought it for work, so that is an extra 10% GST refund :).

    • just print out the add and bring it into an OW and demand the pricematch! :)

  • Now, who has a good deal on screen protectors and cases?

    • Case, based on Whirlpool, get: Ultra Smart Heat Setting Leather Case for Google Nexus 7" Tablet on FeeBay. The main reason is that it has Smart Cover function. Other cases might also have Smart Cover support (but not sure).

Screen protectors… yet to find a good one. Most of the cheap ones tend to be a little bit too big.

  • +2

really need someone to post a receipt. I'm getting nothing from OW.

    • Kogan provides its on warranty
    • Grey import etc

    :(

    • +1

get it from kogan then. I am not rushing in, as i feel that the prices on these tablets can only go down b/w now and xmas

      • Yeah, but some people want that $25 google credit which the promotion ends today as previously stated. If someone can provide a receipt, it would be greatly helpful. Thank you!

    • Scroll up little bit or search my username in this page. U will get the proof.

  • +2

guys here is my receipt, just brought it from Nunawading Vic Officeworks store
    hope this will help

    $254.60

  • Just nabbed the last one from Officeworks South Melbourne, price-matched for AUD $254.60. If anyone needs a photo of my receipt, let me know.

  • Similarly, I managed to grab the last one from Parramatta NSW for $254.60.

  • Got one price-match (+ %5 price-beat guarantee) from Officeworks East Victoria Park, WA.

  • I also got one from OfficeWorks (Traralgon VIC) price-matched for $254.60

  • Price matched at OW Glen Waverley for $254.60 :)

    • thanks

  • Any local retailers selling the 8GB version?

  • Sounds like OW has a really random price matching policy. Can anyone else mention what NSW stores have price matched Kogan (for any product)? I was always under the impression that OW doesn't price match grey imports like Kogan so it's quite strange so many people have been successful price matching (especially when Kogan is online only so shipping price at least should be added to any price match). Sounds like poor OW training to be honest.

I bought the Nexus 7 for $292 today at OW (price matched from HN), going overseas next week so will go down to about 265, sounds like I got an OK price but not as good as this. Bit sad!

    • you can only claim TRS if the invoice is more than $300, am i wrong?

    • TRS only for orders >$300

      • I bought something else there and got it to > $300 for the receipt total.

    • +1

OW by their policy dont have to match kogan- (non indentical warranty)/US adapter(i assume)

I think it comes down to keeping the customer happy- they definitely lose money on each sale like this though.

    • yea, I tried 2 OW in Melbourne CBD, both of em reject pricematch with Kogan. Instead I pricematched with cplonline and got it for 284$, seeing other guys got like 254$ make my heart broken :'(

  • Picked up the last one from OW Glebe (Parramatta Rd, opp Syd Uni) for $254.60. Claimed the $25 Google Play coupon. Great deal. Thanks OP.

  • got one from ow werrbiee $254.60, bloke had to check with a manager but they did it for me ftw.

  • +1

poop on a stick! I got this price-matched last week for $265.10 and I thought that was a deal! lol
the ozbargainer in me just died a little.

  • +1

Went into OW to play with one today with high temptation to get one..

Really nice device, runs fast, feels good, screen a bit small but pretty good for the size.

Just couldn't find a use for it! E

  • -1

Maybe google is launching a new nexus 7 with a micro sd slot and 3g before the ipad mini and that explains the price drop.

  • Got it priced matched at OW Wentworthville, NSW. $254.40.

  • +1

Also got it price matched at OW this morning.

For those that are wondering about the $25 Google Play credit, I still received it about 5 minutes ago. Looks like the Google offer expires 30/9 US time.

Hope that helps someone as I wasn't sure if that was going to work.

  • OW castle hill honoured the price match from Kogan. print the receipt and show it to them. Good value! for $254.40

  • +1

Just bought one from OW at Taren Point for $236.55. Can any advise how you go about getting the google play credit.

    • sign into your google account, and then instantly you'll get the $25 credit to your account.

    • did they have anymore in stock?

  • if OW price match Kogan, does this mean this will work for everything else?
