2360

I just received this promotional letter on my mailbox and it seems that it's a good promotional offer from ING.

Things you should know:

The Wave and Save 5% rebate offer is available from 1 October 2012 to 30 June 2013 (“Offer Period”) to all existing Orange Everyday customers (including joint account holders) who request to update to a Visa payWave card and the first 30,000 new ING DIRECT Orange Everyday customers who activate their payWave enabled Visa Debit card during the Offer Period (“Eligible Customers”). The 5% rebate applies on all contactless purchases made by Eligible Customers during the Offer Period on purchase amounts of up to AUD $99.99. The 5% rebate will be made into the Orange Everyday account immediately after transaction settlement.

Call 133464 to get your payWave enabled Visa Debit Card.

  • I didn't know that they can track transactions by contactless and by chip/swipe.

    • +2

      lol..

    • +7

they know when you buy toilet paper..

    • They can, and the reason ING is encouraging customers to use contactless is because the credit card transaction rate that the retailer gets charged is higher than if you put your card in the machine and press credit.

      The bank gets richer!

I always use savings with my debit card… I hate it when I press credit because it takes a couple of days to finalise and you end up with a different available funds balance and current balance.

      • You run the risk of others in the queue seeing your PIN as you key it in (unless you cover the keypad tightly), if you press savings/cheque. Paywave mitigates that.

        • +4

So that when they steal your credit card they don't need your pin?

        • lol

        • No PIN is required with ordinary credit card at some stores, for purchases below a certain value. Had my bank ring me when I made 3 low value (no PIN required) purchases in Woolies within 15 minutes - as it showed as suspicious activity. So does not seem much more risk with PayWave.

This is my 3rd PayWave enabled Debit card, and I still have not used PayWave. Most stores I use do not (yet) have the equipment, & the only store that did have it - I was buying over $100.

        • That's some good security, Bruce. Do you mind if I ask what financial institution you bank with? :P I'm not trying to steal your identity…I promise!

        • Which Bank - Commonwealth. They rang within 10 minutes of my third purchase.

  • Sounds too good to be true?

  • +3

    Maximum rebate would be $4.99.

ING are always great at these sort of promotions. They give me 50c everytime I get $200 out via EFTPOS!

I have this account, but I don't yet have the payWave card yet (only recently introduced by ING). Might have to give them a call for me to send a payWave card to me!

    • +2

u can cash out via EFTPOS !!!

so u can keep getting 50csssssss for free

    • +2

I think it's on every contactless purchase of under $100. So yes, maximum rebate per eligible purchase is $4.99 but your total rebate received could be unlimited.

      • +1

Yeah, I forgot to write per transaction. Always got to be careful on OzB….

Yes, you could keep getting 50c for free up to your daily withdrawal limit, which I can't remember off the top of my head what it is now. You might annoy customers in the check-out line though by doing x times of transactions… Only recommended in self check-out!

        • +2

spot on ;) Woolies self checkout has Cash Withdrawal option without having to buy anything. Daily cash withdrawal limit is about $2200 so the max you can get is $5.5 x 2 account = $11/day lolz…

        • +1

What you get may deem taxable if you keep doing this.

        • Do you have to actually scan anything through to be able to use the cash withdrawl option? Or can you use the checkout just like at ATM (more or less)?

        • no need to purchase anything

        • the t&c said " The 5% rebate applies on all contactless purchases made by Eligible Customers during the Offer Period on purchase amounts of up to AUD $99.99"

it is purchase not cash withdrawal transaction. we can try and see it first. it is good if it is working, I will put $5k on the account and do 50 withdrawal a day and deposit back to the bank and transfer to ing, do it till next june next year as my additional income :)

        • if ing show on the statement as interest then yes or if you honestly declare to ato then yes, if none of the events happen then ahm :)

        • +2

contactless = paywave = credit transaction. you can't get cash out. you need to enter a pin for eftpos to get cash out.

        • cash out bonuses don't appear in the interest statement. i think they are taxable income.

i don't think the rebates will appear as interest either. i don't think the rebates are taxable.

but i am not a tax professional, you should seek professional advice.

      • +1

Providing you have unlimited funds. :P

  • What is the max you can get back?

Can you do 1000 x $99.99 transactions and get back 5%?

    • Seems like it - there no limitation on total rebates in the T&C's. The Only limit is $5,000 per day, per account using the VISA debit card.

      • Can't you increase the daily limit?

Of course, ING Direct lets you have 2 Visa debit cards…

  • +1

The 5% rebate amounts of up to AUD $99.99

    less than $5 max

    • it will add up depending on how much your purchase using the card. If you spend $1000 split in 10 purchases, then you get $49 back.

    • +2

Its only 5% each time, but imagine the number of times you will visit Coles in a 6 month period. And imagine getting 5% off (and for me) every single purchase during that time. Not to mention other places that take the paywave….

      • +2

but, thats why we buy Coles cards and Wish cards at 5% off……all the time. This is still a great deal but :)

        • So, -keep- buying them, just be sure to use your Wave & Save card… double savings!

        • +1

you can't, this seems to apply to payWave transactions only not online transaction :(

      • Coles staff get similar discounts… but we don't have to work at Coles, for same discount (for some months, at least…)

    • just get the checkout operator to do the groceries as multiple $99 transactions

      • +2

why not split it up per every $30 so you get multiple fuel vouchers :)

        • +1

          Antisocial behaviour.

        • or use self-serve checkouts (if available) where you make the decisions.

  • It would be good to do a comparison between this and an existing rewards credit card, where you would forgo the minimum $1=1 point bonus and get 5% back instead.

The ING might come out better if you have many smaller transactions?

    • +1

This IS way better than credit card rewards which range between 0.5% to 2% cashback (if you convert points).

      • +1

Yes subject to the following limitations:
        - contactless purchase (can't use for online purchases)
        - purchase transaction amount is under $100

      • +1

This IS way better than credit card rewards which range between 0.5% to 2% cashback (if you convert points).

Most range around 0.5%. Would be interested to know if you've found one that gives 2% return.

        • I think that's if you accrue and convert for long distance international flights -> 2% return

  • +1

Just when I was thinking I'd move away from ING.

    • +3

Why would yo move away from ING? I've been with them for ~3 months now, and couldn't possibly be happier with them

      • Competitive interest rate and I'd be happier with them :)

But they're pretty good for everyday banking

  • +1

Nice I just called em up to get it and apparently they sent me new ones already!
Since my current card has expired.

I have $0 in the accounts lol

  • Was going to cancel my account, lucky I didn't!

  • Offer available to the first 30,000 new ING DIRECT Orange Everyday customers who activate their payWave enabled Visa Debit card during the Offer Period - better get your applications in!

  • There's no way of knowing when 30000 members activating are reached? :S

    • THEY should know…

      • I called them and they said it's still on.

  • freaking awesome! 5% off till july 2013!

woolworths have just reintroduced visa debit cards as payment. nice!

    • You are currently number 2 in the queue. We apologise for the delay. We will assign you to an agent as soon as one is available. The average wait time is 01:25 minutes.

      • No queue updates for me, but I just got off with them after being answered in around 5 mins, which isn't too bad considering they may be getting a small rush of calls from us :D

    • We appreciate your patience. A direct associate will answer your call as soon as possible.

      dammit! hurry up!

      • getting the same thing as well

      • finally. done!

        • same here. Look at the timing between the comments

  • Fantastic deal! Was about to post it myself but you beat me to it :P
I called ING and they confirmed there are absolutely no additional costs involved with this card. Nice to see the banks giving US money for a change!

    • Um… I think you can get a fee, eg, if you stick the card into a Bank Machine & request a Balance report…

      • ING gives you back the ATM $2 fee if you are taking out $200

They've definitely given me back the ATM fee the last 3 times.

  • Is this promotion for existing ING customer only?
Can I open a new account and ask for a upgrade now ?

    • +2

The Wave and Save 5% rebate offer is available … to all existing Orange Everyday customers (including joint account holders) who request to update to a Visa payWave card and the first 30,000 new ING DIRECT Orange Everyday customers who activate their payWave enabled Visa Debit card during the Offer Period (“Eligible Customers”).

as i read it, the 30,000 limit is only for new customers. all existing customers get the rebate if they upgrade

      • That'd be ING Direct… & that's the kind of policy that keeps me in their camp :-)

      • call them last night, the lady told me it is counted on the registered application, when the last 5000 spot remaining, you can see the counter when you apply the card.

  • Awesome deal! Thank you OP! I love ING!

  • Hello everyone,

To save you time.. you can do it online

just go here and click apply online
    http://www.ingdirect.com.au/everyday/orangeeveryday.htm#appl…

that's what the direct associate said to me and now my account is all activated!

    • but your card is not activated. you can only do that when you receive it in the mail

  • +1

Thanks OP, setup an account. Hope Im one of the first 30k.

Does anyone know of any places that do the 5% off woolies cards and take paywave?? Almost 10% off! My local RAC just has ordinary terminals :(.

    • +1

That's an excellent idea. I wonder if the RAA in Adelaide has them.

      • I can confirm ADL city only have the normal EFTPOS machine
can someone update for other locations?

  • signing up when I get home, thanks OP!

BTW, 30,000 sounds like a lot, it should last a few days

  • +4

Just be aware yeah that the actual eftpos terminal needs to be pay wave enabled. Not all of these exist in every store…

    • +1

How do I know that machine is paywave enable..
I guess all coles and woolies do.. but how about the rest..?

      • +1

        Costco, K-Mart, Big W.
Look for "PayWave" or "PayPass" logo.

      • if you put your card near the terminal and makes a beep sound, then it is paywave enabled

  • would love to upgrade, waiting on the phone for 15 mins so far waiting for someone to answer..

    • Had the same experience just now.
Be patient, you'll get them eventually

  • Awesome deal thanks OP.
    Just signed up.

  • Legend

  • why not just sign up online? It doesn't say anywhere you need to call them to get the rebate, and it's easier :)

    • Existing customers have to call to upgrade it seems.

  • Attention.
I just chat with the Customer service and they said they promotion is for existing customer only..
She keep asking where did I get this information (I said my friend is existing customer)

Cilla: You can see there is says 'existing customers'. It is not being offered to new clients.
You: It said "the first 30,000 new ING DIRECT Orange Everyday customers"
Cilla: New to the product, not the bank

    • Well now that I have just joined, am I not an existing customer? :)

    • Got the same answer on livechat:

Kayla: Hi, are you an ING DIRECT Australia client?
      You: no
Kayla: This is for our existing clients who hold an ING DIRECT account.

      • +3

Holysmokes, I'm talking to Kayla too!

        • Update: you can only update your cards over the phone according to Kayla. Ie. Can't do it online through the livechat

    • +1

Just got through the callcentre who confirmed that offer is open to everyone! So obviously confusion from staff.

  • on the phone for 9 mins… cant wait

  • When we receive our new wave cards & activate it… how we suppose to know we are the first 30,000?

    • +1

go buy something then check your bank account for the immediate rebate.

      • good thinking ;)

  • Don't worry.

  • Are those that signed up to this deal eligible? http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/73149

  • -1

Just remember that contactless payments have a minimum time between use. For example, I cannot use my PayPass mastercard twice at mcdonalds within 30mins. If I try and use contactless to pay a second time, the card is rejected and I have to insert it.

    • Damn, so making separate receipt wouldn't help :(

    • +2

This is not entirely true. Contactless payments have other limits (number of consecutive transactions before fallback to chip, maximum cumulative amount ect.) Also some banks require a timeout (few minutes) between two transactions made for the same amount at the same merchant.
But there is no such thing as minimum time between contactless thansactions.
Thust me, chip and contactless payments was my job for several years. :)

      • +6

No i am not going to thust you
