  • Are the sales from Dell usually better closer to Christmas dates?

    • +1

This is the second time I've seen this monitor on sale, it seems to sell pretty well without sales in the past so they prolly didnt bother. Maybe those korean monitors have made a dent in their market:P

Point being, I dont think their likely to go much lower than this price on this.

  • +2

    great monitor
    bought one last time

  • hmm, this or the ips for $115 more.

  • Good timing too! My trusty old Dell 2405 just blew up the other day :(

    • +2

I hope that doesn't happen to mine! Cost me an arm and a leg that thing (back in the day).

      • +2

My Dell 2405 still running fine.
I always wonder if its time to upgrade when I see the 27 inch on special

        • Mine is fine as well but there's a bit of discolouration in the middle and on the sides. Not so noticeable unless I'm viewing a mostly white screen but I'd love to upgrade to a 27".

      • My 2405FPW is still going strong too. I could never imagine paying $1.5k on special for a monitor these days, but back then the 2405 was the duck's nuts. I saved up so hard for that thing.

        • I have a 2711 next to my 2405 and I have to say the brightness and colour on the new screen dances around the old one now.

  • This one has a refresh rate of 60 Hz. Wouldn't it be better to purchase a 120-Hz Monitor (i.e: Samsung A950)?

    • +2

This is a 2560x1440 monitor, unlike the Samsung A950 you mentioned. Big difference.

      • At 27" the widescreen format isnt as big a problem as smaller monitors. Its personal preference still. I've always been 16:10, but after seeing how the 950 performs and looks, its the first time I've wanted to grab a 16:9 monitor. Will really improve all forms of gaming with its added smoothness. Plus I've never had a samsung monitor start to discolour in places. Still, the dells do look excellent. Either monitor is a win win.

    • +3

That is terrible advice, take it from someone who has had a 2709W and a U2711, 24" is the maximum you want to to be viewing text at 1920x1200 or 1920x1080 from a normal distance. At 27" you can see the pixels and it is a far less pleasant experience. The only reason i would get a 27" at that resolution would be for a 120Hz and gaming only secondary monitor, so your S2740L is lacking there.

You also don't need anything special to power a 2560x1440 in terms of video cards unless you are gaming, and even then i did just fine on a Nvidia GTX 560Ti until very recently.

    • +2

S2740L has a highly reflective screen, no displayport, no usb3 or card reader, and only has tilt-adjustment. And why would you not want 2560 X 1440 on a 27inch? You can always adjust font size.

        • +2

          I wouldn't mind the 30" 2560 x 1600. :)

        • +6

I suspect MrZ has never used a 27" monitor for more than 5 minutes. Personally, I have used the u2711 for 2 years and love it. Don't have any problems reading text and I have not adjusted the size from default.

        • I know right. Amazing clarity and stunning visuals… the horror!

        • IIRC MrZ has stated in the past that he is still using a CRT Sony Trinitron…

        • Why would you assume gaming is the ultimate goal of any hardware purchase. I dunno, perhaps people may actually do work with their computers. And a 2560x1440 27" would be mighty fine for design work, sure its a step down from a u2711, but unless you're using a fire pro or quadro, you won't be able to actually make use of the difference.

        • Yes, as my TV set - a 34" widescreen HD Trinitron. Only reason I'm using an LCD monitor is because they never sold widescreen Sony CRT monitors here in Australia (but they did overseas).

Anything over 1920x1200 is a waste - the amount of video content above this resolution is virtually nil. If you play HD 1080p video on a monitor with that resolution, the video is scaled (*note below), which degrades the picture. Having a native 1080p or 1200p screen is the best, both for gaming, video/movies, and less eye strain due to everything on the desktop being larger. But hey, I bet if they offered 14" laptops with 2560x1440 displays you lot would be the first to go out and buy one.
*note: 720p video actually would not suffer degradation seeing as the resolution is exactly divisible into 2560x1440. 1080p, however, would be.

        • Anything over 1920x1200 is a waste

I would sacrifice a minion to get a 30" 2560 x 1600 Dell monitor at work. Gladly and without a thought.

          Sincerely,
          Discombobulated Panda, occasionally evil.

lol, you replied to the wrong comment, genius. Were the pixels too tiny for you to accurately click?

  • +1

Got this last time it was on special. V happy with it, and the usb3 ports are a great bonus.
Also shipping only took 2 days to regional vic!

  • I love my Dell U2711 … excellent monitor.

Great panel, same as the one in my shimian, personally I'd still buy cos I hate the matte (sand and Vaseline) coating that they have in these dell displays.
But a cracker price so +1 from me

    • Didnt know the korean monitors were using this AH-IPS. From what I gather they were not.

There is a way to remove the coating on the dell (u2711). There was a youtube vid showing how to do it

      • Was going to buy a $300 Korean monitor - so the Dells have superior panels in them?

        • i think its LG or another manufacturer that makes IPS lcd panels. so pretty good chance of it being korean eitherway

        • I was too but I wanted hdmi for PS3 and the korean that would do it is $458.

So $100 more for dell and 3 year local warranty, I will prob go for this.

AH-ips is lower power useage from what I can tell. Not as good as the panel in the 2711 but seems only graphic artists, printers etc will notice/need the better one

Thought I seen that HP make the one for dell? I could be mistaken

        • Sorry just realized it was the same panel in the U2711 but may be different for this one, the panel is definitely the same as the apple cinema display though and it really is a great monitor.

Plus I think removing the anti glare coating on a monitor would void that 3 year warranty.

  • Is it worth an extra $279 to upgrade from 24" to 27" I just ordered yesterday?

    • The difference is about 3 inches and 1.6 million pixels extra

  • I wonder if this would connect to my z930 toshiba via HDMI to pump 2550 x 1440, doesnt hdmi have a resolution limit?

    • HDMI 1.4 can support 3840 × 2160p (Quad HD) but at this stage there is only one computer monitor that will handle 2550 x 1440 over HDMI and that is a 27" Asus model. Otherwise, you need display port or dual link DVI to achieve the higher rez.

  • Anyone know what courier Dell use for delivery?

    • AAE / Startrack from memory

God I choose between 2 of these and the Dell for work sigh - this would give you 1980 x 2400 but with bezel in the centre. The Dell is $100 more and 2550 x 1440 and physically smaller area as well. Damn these choices!

    • What's the job?

I saw a guy with 8 x 23/24 inch monitors for his work. Each one monitoring different news feeds and financial information. So for him more smaller monitors were important.

However if you don't like the idea of constantly shifting your neck and head you'd be advised to go with a single larger and better quality monitor.

  • I have the U2711B 27" (about 1.5 years old) and it's a great monitor.

  • Ordered yesterday, arrived today. Awesome display.

  • I ordered one this morining

got an acknowledgement email, thats it.

Cant check the order status online either. It's just blank

  • Ordered the monitor from DELL and have been discussing delivery options with their delivery courier - Start Track for two weeks. After two no show up delivery appointments had to call DELL for refund. What is the incredible customer careless company. Never step in that pit again.

    • dell arent too bad. they sent out a replacement the next morning via DHL.

on the other hand, having it delivered initially by star track express was a headache. im willing to bet that star track are the useless ones here.

  • ON sale again, same price. Deal finishes in a couple days (22nd Nov)

But for anyone that missed out- http://accessories.ap.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=au&c…
