Just picked up 2 of these for $11 each, price tag was $23 but scanned for $11 at the checkout, not sure if it's at all kmarts though, but this is damn cheap, I got it at merrylands btw.

Receipt will be uploaded wen I get home

Bloody good device for the price. It's a little superfluous if you already have a digital TV that's capable of recording but if not a perfect way to modernise an older TV. I especially like that it doesn't take another power point behind the TV, I'm looking at you Xbox Kinect! (._.)

  • great price, looking forward to the receipt!

  • +5

Works on PC with the right drivers as a USB Twin HD Tuner

    • With my experience though it's not great. On the PS3 it will pick up all FTA channels we can get, on the PC it's glitchy at best with some channels not working. Suggestions? I'm using those drivers + Windows Media Centre.

  • +1

These work very well in linux as well, with one gotcha, some of these have issues where tuning on the second tuner causes reception issues on the first one. This causes problems with eg VDR, where secondary tuners are used to scan for updated EPG data etc.

Apparently the affected devices were never meant to reach end users, but it appears some have slipped through the net. Could you post the serial numbers of the ones you purchased?

    • +2

yea no probs, I'm still out late night shopping

      • +1

ok where is the serial ? its not the barcode is it ? on the sticker on the unit it says 1403930 ?

    • agreed, i use one of these for linux and they are quite impressive, one of the best devices imho (specially those that are dual-tuner models). The best signals i get come from this device.

  • do you need psn access for play tv to work, and FW above 3.55?

    • no

    • +1

There was a version I upgraded to that need newer than 3.55 - but it was fairly trivial to manually install the pkg with a good brain. My unit came with a very old version in the disc.

      • There is a couple of new cfw out now.

        • +1

Mm all the way up to 4.30 now! :O
Still i'm gonna stay on 3.55 til they've ironed out any bugs ;)

        • I have been using it for months on 3.55 with no issues and I am now running it on rogero 4.30 with no issues.

      • Good version that is - stupid auto correct making me sound like a tosser :/

  • +3

I highly recommend it, it is the fastest tuner I have ever used.

I bought mine for the UK before they were released over here (I had to live with out SBS for a year and half).

Even for the $150-odd bucks I paid for it, it is still worth it. $11 you can't go wrong.

      • +4

Please explain? I have used play TV as my digital tuner for almost 2 years with no problems. Even the PS3 which has run pretty much everyday and is yet to have a hiccup other then the need for an occasional clean.

        • i have heard of people having it working fine, no problems at all.
          my personal experience was terrible.
so terrible that i cannot recommend it at all.

im not saying everyone will have the amount of problems i had, for some it may work fine. but im sure there will be people who buy this and regret it immediately.

people can neg my comment if they dont want to hear bad things about the product, but the fact is my unit was pathetic.

i could list the actual errors i experienced with it, but it would take too long, and for $11 people will probably ignore me and give it a go anyway.

some of the worst problems though were the unit simply choosing not to record things i had scheduled, then deleting any evidence that i had scheduled them in the first place. or it would record a show, but when i go to play the recording, its is 0 minutes long and doesnt do anything.
basically i couldnt even rely on it to record a show, which is the single fundamental activity this device needs to perform in order to be a tv recorder like it claims.

all i can say is there is a reason its so cheap.

Here is the receipt from Deptraisteve (he bought me one :p)

He might be able to retake a better shot of the receipt when he gets home :)

  • Very few stores have stock. Not all stores will have this price.

    • +1

How do you know not many stores have stock?

      • -1

        I just know.
        Clearly I'm physic.
Also just checked the comments. I was right. What a shock.
Only the big stores got a decent size quantity of the PlayTV.
Most stores only received about 10 or so and this was back when the PlayTV was first released.

  • Bargain. I'm gunna check out Kmart at Aust Fair tomorrow.

Does it mean your antenna feed is split again, meaning the TV will have less signal. Or is it like the old VCR and there is no loss?

    • playtv does not have antenna out.

    • Mine sucks. Suspect will need a splitter with boost, like these:
      http://www.kingray.net.au/products/splitter-amplifiers/indoo…

      • mine too, bought a few years back, keeps freezing etc. changed HDD in the Ps3, bought the signal booster, no luck, would not recommend at all.
But we could just be the unlucky few.

  • whoa, anyone know if its avaliable everywhere?

  • last year I price matched $10 at DJ with Myers. Good one if you have old tv. But if you have new Smart tv then no use

    • +1

Catchup services have their uses but they're not a substitute for a PVR if you watch a lot of TV.

  • +2

Anyone been to Burwood VIC yet?

  • Nothing at robina, elanora or broadbeach

    • +1

on the floor they had one left, i had to ask if they had any others in the back which they did.

      • What store mate??

        • Merrylands, think I took the last 2 though

        • Makes sense

The stores above I checked didn't have any

  • Nothing at Warriewood

  • Wow you're really lucky to get this, I paid $100 for PlayTV + Blu Ray Remote at the start of this year! My whole family uses this, we often press pause and then watch a TV show at our leisure, fast forwarding through ads. Highly recommended!

  • Does anyone think jb or eb will price match?

  • +1

Merrylands is out. I think deptraisteve got the last two there!

  • None at casula.

    • +1

Thanks for sharing. Saved me a drive.

  • Nothing at Eastgardens, will check out other stores tomorrow if I can.

Edit: Would anyone be able to get me 1 & I shall reimburse.. (bad back ugh!) please?

  • Any VIC store ?

  • I have one of these. They're very good. Beats buying a HD set top box with HDD. I paid $160 for it and didn't regret it. For $11, I'm tempted to buy another one and give it away or just hold on to it in case mine breaks.

  • None at Stanhope Gardens

  • So it records to your PS3 HDD right? Mines only 60gb though how much does recording take hour/gb?

    • Depends on resolution/bitrate of the channel. Generally around 2-2.5GB/hr SD and maybe 2-3x that for HD. It is fairly trivial to upgrade the hard drive in your ps3 - It is just a standard 2.5" drive (I have a 500GB drive in my 120GB slim ps3)

  • I bought the last one a few nights ago at Mt Druitt, they had a massive sign saying $79 -> $11
only had one left that night though..

  • None at Knox City store in Melbourne.

  • None at the Rowville Kmart VIC store… was hoping that since it wasnt a prominent Kmart that there may be some in stock, but to no avail

    • Same as Boronia Vic. Checked out the back and none in stock

      • So the lady at Knox was kinda enough to check all the local stores to see if any had in stock. Rowville (Stud Park), was listed as having the only one in stock, but when she rang them they confirmed that none were in stock.
If anyone finds any in stock, it would be greatly appreciated if you let me know where :)

  • i bought mine for $70 all those years ago…

    • Screw that I paid like $150+

      AND NO REGRETS

  • I cant seem to find it near me :(

  • +4

LOL. We have over 100 positive votes but only a few people were able to buy one.
    That's Ozbargain for you

  • None in Geelong or Corio VIC. They said they haven't had them for a long time because "they are getting rid of them".

  • +1

None @ 9am in Brandon park, vic. :/

    • Went past it this afternoon and was wondering whether I should look, feel better now :)

  • none at Chatswood Chase.

  • None at Marion, SA.

  • +2

    Harvey Norman price matched

    • What did you take to make them price match it

      • The pic of the receipt in the OP, straight from my phone.

        • EB Games price match this?

    • I'm surprised hn price matched. Which store was this?

    • Got a copy of the receipt?

      • ** RECEIPT INCEPTION

    • sorry. gave it to a mate so he could get one

  • None at Broadway in Sydney when I visited, said they never got any stock. Also tried the Target store to see if they would price match, but they had no stock either.

  • +2

looks like everybody +ve but nobody but the poster got this deal haha..

  • Went to Pac Fair Kmart they had now and they were nice enough to check all the other Gold Coast stores which = NONE.

They said to me they had a few calls regarding this and when I came in it was time to check the other stores.

Good luck with the other kmarts not on the Gold Coast :)

  • Holly cow!!! They might as well give it away for free. Dirt cheap!!

  • I have checked for WA: Joondalup, Warwick, Wanneroo, Innaloo, Mirrabooka, Morley and Clarkson. 0 in stock at all of these stores :(

  • My local Kmart didn't have any stock… tried one of the EB stores but they wouldn't because the receipt was from NSW… So anyone got a receipt from QLD and I'll try the other EB store… Or even better a receipt for EB, JB HiFi, Target…?

  • Could anyone upload a receipt for WA at any of the retailers (especially if they got them to price match)? I may as well try price matching at a couple of different retailers.

  • Harvey Norman at Moore park price matched, showed them a copy of the receipt posted here, got 2 for $22 =)

  • those who got it price matched at harvey norman able to upload their receipt from harvey norman?

  • For those who brodened it, I'm willing to pay $20 for it. PM me!!

  • I wasn't able to get anyone in Sydney CBD to price match it. Most saw the price and just flat out refused. A few were convinced the receipt was fake. One even came dangerously close to calling me a liar.

  • ever since i upgraded to the latest FW, i cannot see any Channel 7 listings in the EPG!!! any1 else?

    • You could try deleting the app and reloading the original from the install disk that came with it. Has fixed awkward issues for me in the past.

  • +1

No stock at Kmart Keilor Downs, seems scarce. Anyone else successful with price matches?

  • Nothing left in SA. Tried price match at Harvey Norman Woodville they politely said no (fair enough).

  • Kmart - Northcote out :(

  • Went to Toowong without any luck.

Anyone know where's the cheapest PlayTV outside of this deal?

    • I went to Toowong and they had one in stock. I asked the guy if it was $11 and he scanned it and said yes then paused then said it hasn't been marked down officially so he would not sell it for $11. I reckon the bloke bought it for himself right after I left!

  • Tried to price match at HN camberfield even though I know how rude the staff are there. Rather TV's just straight out saying no they bothered to waste my time saying they can't match a receipt accusing me of forging it, they also checked online and called the closest Kmart store. Then they tell me they won't match $11 anyway. It's under the cost price.

Hate that store so much. Tried to buy a 60" TV and they were so unhelpful that we left the store within minutes not buying anything.

  • Kmart Werribee had none. If anyone got extras, let me know :)

  • I just called the following stores and none of them had a single one in stock :(

    Ashfield
    Bankstown
    Burwood
    Hurstville
    Marrickville

It's also not in the catalogue since it's a sale item- so it's not too promising you'll find one, especially now.

  • Despite their policy on price matching and making me wait a good 20 minutes for confirmation, Harvey norman, West Perth will not price match, even with 2 different receipts (Kmart and target).

Honestly dont even know why I bother with HN, given their horrid reputation and track record to a vast majority of consumers, bought it on myself.

    • Because HN are franchised by independent owners it is typically to the discretion of the manager as to price match and follow these kinds of policies, or just how 'low' of a deal they can do on negotiating when purchasing products.

I know this for 2 reasons, one being when I needed to return an item to HN with recept but went to a different store to the one I actually purchased it from, it was explained to me that because they are individually owned they can not return the item and I must go back to the purchasing store. The second being that when there was the Xbox Kinect price error and people got it for $95 odd bucks, they refused to price match even though I provided a copy of the receipt from a kind ozbarginer and it was from HN! they even looked into it and called the store and said that it was a 'one off' price because the costomer had purchased multipul other items and could not be repeated at that price.

So I went across the road to Target and would you believe it took 2 min to walk to sound, ask the guy to open the cabinet and price match a recept I had on my phone, and I was walking out the store item in hand, no 20 min wait just to be told no and leave empty handed :)

  • +1

Harvey Norman is a large display centre and should be treated as such. No disappointments that way :)

    • I thought it was more a quarintine zone… "Enter at your own risk"

      • as a display centre its dissapointing - as a store with make believe service and policies its crap, as for the retail laws it ignores which state in OZ enforces them? buy abroad because you get more service in a foreign country - makes us compulsory voters look a bit deficient in more ways than 1.
