Verbatim3

Finally we bring you all a new USB deal. This time a Verbatim USB 3 drive. We have a LOT of stock so it should last a few days hopefully. These drives will begin shipping on Thursday. We have included a link to a review of the drive on the product page.

You enter the coupon code after the first Paypal page. It works for anything on the site.

Any issues, shoot us an email [email protected]

Also don't forget our previous deal on the Samsung All in One PC is ending tomorrow. http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/83182.

UPDATE: Well we made it 3 days without managing to sell out, so we feel like people who wanted them have had a pretty good chance. But we want to clear the remaining stock, so we have taken off the limit. You can now buy as many as you want!

Stop the presses!!! Sorry it was late last night and we forgot we were going to play a little game. There are 5 Colours. Post your guess as to which colour will sell out first. The catch is we have different starting quantities of each drive and we are not going to tell you what they are. But you can assume that we ordered based on our assumptions of what would sell fastest (so not many pinks). So you pick your colour. All of the correct answers will go into a draw and we will select 3 people to get a free drive. Good Luck!

    • after logging in through paypal and going back to the site you'll be able to put the coupon code in

  • how many Gb are they ???

    • +2

16gb my bad, forgot to put it in the title.

  • 16gb, might want to put it in the title op. and these are nice prices for usb3.0

    • Done thanks!

"The Verbatim Store 'n' Go V3 offered up passable performance in our timed data transfer tests, clocking in with write speeds of 10.7 MBps and read speeds topping out at 79.2 MBps using USB 3.0."
"With USB 2.0, the Verbatim V3 scored 10.2 MBps (write) and 33.6 MBps (read)."
    From here.

    Could be worse?

    • +1

Definitely not the fastest drive in the world. But for the price here, which is less than tiger direct which is listed in the review at over $20 shipped, it is a pretty good deal.

      • +3

It's quite slow, whats the point of it even being USB 3.0? Couldn't i plug this into my USB 2.0 port and reach it's top writing speed? I'd rather pay more and get something faster.

        • +1

Once you've written the data, wouldn't you want to read it? 79MB/s is much higher than 33.6MB/s.

        • +1

I suggest people do not use USB 2.0 benchmark result to judge this drive.

People who do not have USB 3.0 ports should not bother with these.

CystalDiskMark Speed Test (true, sequential read/write is cheating) is 81MB read, 45MB write. I would be happy with that speed on USB 3.0 for this drive (at this price).

    • -6

10.7MB/s writes are 100% achievable on USB 2.0, which can go up to 60MB/s. USB3 is a marketing gimmick on most of these sticks. Unless it exceeds the capability of USB2 ports, it doesn't need to be USB3.

      • You're forgetting about the read speeds. Most of these cheap USB3 sticks seem to only have read speeds which are superior to their USB2 counterparts.

      • I've never seen a USB 2.0 drive actually hit 60MB/s. They usually top out under or around 30MB/s.

Is there actually a USB 2.0 drive that approaches 60MB/s?

        • What I'm saying is that the maximum speed achievable by a USB2 port is 60MB/s. If you can't even reach those read speeds in your USB3 stick (most I've seen are about 30MB/s give or take), I feel I'm being misled into paying more for something that can be done in USB2.

        • As Michael mentioned, the maximum speed is not 60MB/s. It's 30-40MB/s, which is what I've observed in reality.

You're simply dividing 480Mbit/s by 8 to get MB/s, but are neglecting to take into account protocol overhead.

The simplest example would be serial comms (who remembers 8-N-1?), where one byte equals ten bits - one start bit, eight data bits and one stop bit.

That means a 10Mbps serial link can only have a max throughput of 1MB/s, not 1.25MB/s as you would expect.

A rather poor but slightly passable analogy would be the speedo on your car. It might say 240km/h but it'll never achieve that in reality. Likewise, USB 2.0 is "480Mbps" but you'll never achieve 60MB/s in reality.

(you can look up "gross bit rate" or "data signalling rate" vs "payload rate" or "wire speed" for more info)

      • +6
Almost. Here's something taken from a Microsoft Answers forum post:

"USB 2.0 clock speed is 480 megabits per second. That's 60 megabytes per second. Given the protocol overhead and the fact that USB 2.0 is half-duplex, the maximum data rate will be 30-40 megabytes per second. The 480 megabits per second limit applies to the USB controller and is shared between the ports attached to it. The number of USB controllers per card or motherboard will vary."

    • Who wants to wait 2 weeks for shipping?

    • +48

      $15 is $2 more than $13.

      • +6

I know, I just want to put a price reference for everyone to compare

        • Thanks

  • +2

Good work letting us select colour and not just sending a random colour out.

    • +18

We aren't going to subject people to hot pink unless they want it ;)

      • +2

        Just ordered a blue. phew

      • If you have trouble moving them, do a 4 pack of pink for $40 delivered and I'll happily purchase them :)

        • +1

We don't have that many of the pink one, I am sure they will go. But if we need to liquidate them we will pm you ;)

    What !!!! USB 3.0 write Speed = 10MB/s thatis Sloooow ….
like about 28min to fill up with data, not great for a usb 3 device

  • +5

    Real world specification:

    Read speed: 25.63 MB/s
    Write speed: 11.62 MB/s

Write speed is Consistent with advertised specs.

    http://usbflashspeed.com/29779

    • Thanks for the link to USBflashspeed… been looking for a good site to compare real world speeds. Cheers!

    • +1

Interestingly here is the speed on the older drive: http://usbflashspeed.com/device/21190

The issue with these real world sites is that if there are not many reviews and the person who tests it has a very slow or very fast machine it can throw out the result significantly.

I am pretty sure that the result posted for the v3 is based on one test.

      Case in point: http://usbflashspeed.com/device/19445

    • Looks like using USB 2.0 to test a USB 3.0 drive. If I do this on my SSDs (connecting SSDs which are really designed for SATA3 to a SATA to USB 2.0 cable), the result would also be shocking.

Basically, if you only have USB 2.0 ports on your PCs/laptops, unless you are willing to buy USB 3.0 PCI-E cards or USB 3.0 expressport (forgot the actual name, it is for laptops), then there is no point getting this drive.

From the review site, it quoted 81MB read, 45MB write (sequential read/write)… True, sequential read/write tests are kinda cheating… but still a decent indication of the test.

What about this? Master branded USB drives
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Master-16GB-ULTRA2-USB-3-0-Extrem…

16GB for $14, and it claims 20/50mbps write and read.

It was posted last time on Ozbargain and it seems to have pretty good reviews amongst readers.

    • I bought the 32gb version of these, the nickel/swivel one.
I get 30-35 mb/s write, and read speed for some reason is variable, between 40-60mb/s
Bottom line: it's freakin fast, but a swivel/cap whereas Verbatim are the (IMHO) better click design

  • Hey rep,

Thought I might as well ask you here.

I bought the 16gb Lexar USB 3.0 from you guys and now it has suddenly stopped working.

    Any chance for a replacement?

    • +3

Definitely, just flick us an email with your name and invoice number if you have it and we organise the exchange.

  • +4

I don't even need this…. bought one anyway

    • +11

Welcome to ozbargain. Soon you'll have a stash of usb drives and eneloop batteries.

  • anyone else decide on a colour before you check if its available, decisions decisions!!

Crap drive with crap speed. I bought a $35 USB 3 32GB from MSY that writes at 42MB/s - the Supersonic XT from Patriot (I forget the read speeds but they are very good). This isn't worth it.

    • +2

Here is a link to another review: http://www.whoratesit.com/Verbatim-Store-n-Go-V3-USB-30-16GB…

We try to post the most conservative figures so that hopefully when you get the drive it exceeds your expectations.

    • I got a 16GB Verbatim USB 3.0 from the OP last time. The speed is not great, but to be fair it consistently writes above 20MB/ps in my USB 2.0 port. SO go figure.

  • +3

Better than 4-5 MB/s write from the cheap Sandisk models.

  • Good deal.

  • Good deal!

  • will it write/read faster in a usb3.0 port?

  • +1

I say blue will run out quickest

    • We have a contender!

    • Yellow is already gone, isn't it? (I wanted Yellow)

Ah.. Perhaps it was never there…

    • Yes, I just ordered a blue one. Nice retractable and colour choice!

  • Just in time for me to replace my old Sandisk 8GB. Thanks OP :)

  • Yellow

  • Red will sell out first!

    • That's bright pink buddy, no red. Sorry to burst your bubble

Hey Flingshot - alway like your deals and your friendly input here.

    A request:
I would like to buy some decent USB3 Flash drives but I see they are quite often un-co big and cumbersome. It puts me off buying if the case is too large.
Can you, perhaps sometime in the future, do something in a nice compact drive with reasonable write speeds?

    Would be good.

    • ^^ THAT.

Im willing to spend a bit more for a better USB3 16GB or 32GB (32GB preferred) thumb drive. Please do it soon!! Im quite sure there are many like me waiting for the right drive at the right price who want to claim it back on tax next EOFY.

  • Green

These usb3 sticks are rather slow. Is the red version faster?

    • Only if it has white racing stripes.

  • Ordered on Violet..waiting for it to be delivered..

  • Orange colour is my pick.

  • Violet

  • Green

  • Blue!

  • I pick the GREEN would sell fastest

  • RED is always faster - picked that. that will definitely sell out first!

edit; well technically pink - but it looks red from the picture. Heck, for that, it even looks faster =D

  • BLUE WILL SELL THE QUICKEST! cus i just bought them all!

I don't know anyone who has USB 3.0 ports on the front of their PC. For me I'd rather the convenience of being able to plug a USB 2.0 stick into a front port, and get slightly slower speed, than have to reach to the back of my PC to access the 3.0 ports all for a possible (but not likely) speed increase.

    • USB 3.0 devices work perfectly fine in a USB 2.0 port.
The speed increase is real, if you read the pcmag usb3 benchmarks above. 79MB/s read is much, much faster than USB2.

      • Yes but not at USB 3.0 speed they don't.

        • Fortunately, people other than you use laptops, whose usb3 ports are right … there. :)

        • Actually I did a little experimentation and found that USB3.0 devices actually work a bit faster than their USB2.0 counterparts, (even though they are plugged into the USB2.0 port_, usually because they have faster flash memory or uses a better memory controller.

    • I have USB 3.0 ports on the front of my PCs. However, they are more designed for USB 3.0 hard drives. Pretty much my PCs/laptops must either have USB 3.0 or eSATA (it is a mandatory requirement for me for the last 4+ years).

However, for me, these USB sticks are mainly use to replace DVDs. One main use of them is to put Windows 7, Windows 8 or MacOS on. I don't really see a need to use USB 3.0 for these. I am already quite happy with USB 2.0 sticks for OS installs (much quicker than DVDs).

I might just get one to see if USB 3.0 will have offer any speed improvement (for OS install) and whether H77/Z77 boards will boot from intel USB 3.0 ports.

      • hi off topic a bit how do you setup the install/boot windows disk.
have "googled" a bit but just asking as you have them in operation.

        cheers

  • blue!

  • Pink

  • I say blue will go the quickest

  • Or you can get a 32gb USB for $2 more here(not 3.0 but it holds more):
    http://flingshot.com.au/collections/featured/products/verbat…

    • can you use the code to get free shipping on the 32Gb USB2.0.

      • Yep, it is site wide free shipping. Obviously we have free shipping on everything over $100 anyway but for under $100 it will work.
