  • Just to let you all know, this SSD is in fact a mSATA SSD. The 2.5" shell you see is just the housing that contains the adapters.

    • -1

Where does it say mSATA on the product description?

      • +3

some devices can only take the much smaller mSATA..
So people that need a mSATA device can buy this, unscrew the case and pull out the mSATA board.
Makes no difference for a normal laptop/desktop.

        • +1

I just went and bought one. It's not mSATA.

And as a bonus, it's part of the Early Xmas Sale, so it's actually $69, although the sales clerk didn't know it, and in the system it still says $79 but I had to show him the sheet with the price list.

        • -3

I just went and bought one. It's not mSATA.

Did you open it up inside? Was hoping to purchase more for ebay flipping

        • Like krisspy said, you are meant to open the drive up to extract the mSATA.

  • -2

The speeds don't appeal, I'm getting another SanDisk SSD Extreme for $96…, def worth the price !

Shipping is $10, please put it in the title, makes this $89, again ain't worth the price !

    • +2

Title amended, however the walk-in price is still only $79.00 respectively.

    • How come Sandisk Extreme only reads at 23K while this one reads at 75K? Huge difference…

      • Read Speed (IOPS 4K)
        Write Speed (IOPS 4K)

Where does it state 75k ?

  • I'd be all over at 256gb if only to rip it out to put in my Ultrabook!

  • +2

As I mentioned in an above post, this is actually $69, not $79 if you mention the Early XMAS sale. They have a price list at the front counter, and this one appears on it.

    It is not mSATA either.

I bought one to use with a 2.5" enclosure as an alternative to a USB stick. It comes out cheaper per GB than buying a USB3 stick.

    • It is not mSATA either.

Has this changed? The one i bought a few weeks back was mSATA.

      • You must have bought a different model. LZT-128M3S is SATA3 9mm. This is the one going for $69.

It's OEM so it doesn't come with a box or anything. It's just the drive in an antistatic bag.

Uses the Marvell controller, same as Crucial M4.

        • +3

          Did you open it up?

        • Yeah maybe i should be clearer. It comes as a 2.5" 9mm drive, but inside that casing is a mSATA drive. I also paid $69 for it back then.

        • +4

          Sounds like a Russian Doll…

…and in that casing is a USB Drive and in that casing is an SD Card and in that casing is a Micro SD Card and in that casing is a chip and in that casing is a…

        • I didn't open it. I'll assume you're right. I don't know much about mSATA, so I'll ask you to fill me in. Is mSATA slower than SATA3? Does it normally cost less than SATA3 or more?

Is it a bad thing that this drive is really mSATA inside a SATA3 connector, or does that make it even better?

        • Is mSATA slower than SATA3?

mSATA is just another form factor, like 7mm and 9mm but also uses a different connector

Does it normally cost less than SATA3 or more?

          Usually more

Is it a bad thing that this drive is really mSATA inside a SATA3 connector, or does that make it even better?

Makes no difference unless you actually need an mSATA drive, you can just remove the adapter

        • Sounds like it's an even better deal then. You get the versatility of both connections and they normally cost more in mSATA. I should have bought another one while I was there.

here is the speed test i did for the Lite-on SSD. It is actually faster than the Sandisk Extreme that i got.

The only thing i am worried about the Lite-on with the mSATA format is that since there is only 4 NAND chip, they may wear out faster than the regular 120 gigs SSD, which usually have 8 NAND chip.

    • Its also about 5 times larger :) and 20 times FASTER!

  • +1

It's showing on their front page at $69 here

    • But cant get it online for $69

  • So close to hitting the 50c/GB mark :)

  • Is 64gb enough for OS and MS Office?

    • +2

Yes it is. But not much else. LOL.

    • Do yourself a favour, get 128/120GB SSD

I have a 64GB and as the other guy said it's really only good for OS+Office+basic apps. Nothing else. Prices were a lot higher when I bought mine, 120GB is definitely the entry-point today I feel. 240/256GB is the sweet spot for those who can afford more and want to load games or whatever on. Anything above is most likely overkill for most at the moment.

    • +1

OS and Office only takes like 17GB, 64GB is plenty.

      • +1

        windows 7 is about 30gb?

        • Well maybe 17GB might be lower than what other people would get, it's around what I got with Windows 7 Pro, system restore disabled (which I think is only a couple 100mb on a clean install) and disabling hibernation. I use a 32GB drive on my laptop and it's enough.

        • ahh, ultimate is 30gb.

  • $20 for delivering an SSD?
    hmmm…..

    does Officeworks stock these?

    • Hello. It's not $20 for the delivery, just that the $69 price is walk-in only, the price is $79 online, which is still down from over $100, and then $10 delivery.

      As for Officeworks, no idea.

  • Do any of centrecom have paypass ? Is it 2% extra for card payment ?

  • +1

I'd do anything not to give CentreCon my cash. Are they out of the sinbin yet?

  • +4

Centrecom blackburn is pretty dodgy, they insist the price of the Liteon SSD is $79, and that the $69 dollars deal is actually for an Octane 2.0. These Centrecom people are so dodgy that they said oh the price online doesn't apply to them, or whatever other reasons they could pull it out of their rear end. No wonder these stores have no walk-in business, while MSY gets a ton.

    • +1

Absolutely do not trust CentreCom at Blackburn. Kevin, the manager is very difficult to deal with. He runs this store as CentreCom Nunawading Pty Ltd (also known as Class A Audio) under a different ABN to other CentreCom stores. The registered company address is at 48 Wetherby Rd Doncaster, a residental property. Moreover, he does not give refunds for faulty goods. He claims a major fault is not a "Major Problem" hence your statuatory rights to a refund do not apply. If you push him he'll offer you only a small percentage of the purchase price as a token refund for faulty goods. ACCC currently investigating.

      • No wonder, because one of the clerk was about to give in to give me the $69 dollars pricing, then this manager dude comes out and start arguing that the Centrecom online pricing is not applicable to them… etc. There was not a single customer in the store during the 30 minutes i was there.

        • +1

Had the same problem at that store. Went in showing them the price on the front page of their website, they spun some bullshit story about they have low stock so can't sell at that price, maybe "sometime in the future" they could when they have more stock.

Also like you they tried telling my because the website doesn't say it's the LiteOn, the sale was for the OCZ Octane. Even tough the Octane looks nothing like the SSD pictured (but exactly like the picture of the LiteOn one on their online store). And their site doesn't even list any Octanes…

Argued with them with for a few minutes and ended up getting the LiteOn for $79 but with the 3.5" bracket thrown in free (which I needed anyway) - shown as a $5 add-on in the LiteOn's product page but strangely not listed anywhere else in the online store. So basically I lost out on $5 which I can live with.

Good deal otherwise, but I'll be lodging a complaint to [email protected]. Obviously the Nunawading store is not playing along with the other CentreComs.

        • i also lodged a complaint, but they didn't respond. They told me they got around 50 of these drives in stock when i went in at 3 pm yesterday, i doubt they had trouble with stock. Just something they spun to get you to pay the price.

But the speed of the Lite-On mSATA is really good, and it doesn't chock up all the time like the OCZ Nocti (which i got for like 100 dollars @64 gigs).

  • +2

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/lead_org/sets/72157631987291867…

I opened the Lite-on that i bought today (got two of them, since i need some cheap mSATA drives for testing my systems).

  • -1

how many people actually walked in and got it for $69? I can only see one comment, and since the only place it says $69 is on a photo with no product name and the liteon states $79 on the site, I'm thinking its going to be a pain to get it for $69…? also appears they've removed SSDs from the pricelist too…

    • +1

It isn't about the price or anything (i got two at $79), but rather about keeping a promise. It is okay if you can't sell it for $69 dollars or whatever, i mean i think it is a bargain at $79. However, it is wholly another thing to take customers as idiots and treat them as such.

I just don't like how Centrecom do their businesses.

      But having said all that:

Think of this SSD as a Marvell Controller 128 gigs mSATA with Toshiba NAND bundled with a mSATA mPCIe to SATA bridge board. Then this works out to be a very good bargain.

Also, the Lite-On SSD doesn't have any warranty stickers on the screws, so if your mSATA does break within the warranty period, you can reassemble everything, and claim warranty on it.

    • +1

Got it for $69. I called Elsternwick & Hawthorn stores and they had no issues quoting the correct price. Just got back from my OS install on the new SSD. Rather happy with it!

      • +1

Cool thanks. I will try tomorrow.

        Also, yep agreed lead org.

    • +1

The liteon ssd is silver like that, just with it's sticker on there as well. And yea, they are OEM as stated by someone above, they just come in a taped anti-static bag no box etc. - but don't worry that is how they are sent to centrecom from the distributors. :)

      • The Lite-on SSD is very easy to strip apart, and there is no warranty stickers on them either.

    • +1

got it from the Clayton store for $69 no worries.

also - whoever downvoted my comment, I do not think you know what downvotes are for :P

      • great… my friend all went out and bought the drive, and stripped of its mSATA…

  • -2

I found a SSD that is even cheaper with FREE postage:

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/OCZ-Vertex-Plus-R2-Series-120GB-2…

    • I don't know about you, but I wouldn't trust Mr "dfhjh5fg" with 16 stars, a good majority of which are all purchases within the last month. Up to you, though. When things seem too good to be true (a $30 120gb SSD) they usually are. $0.02.

      • +1

Well, you always have PayPal buyer protection, so even if the seller is shady, the buyer is protected.
In the rare instances where I've been burnt, I have always gotten my money back from PayPal.
Also not all laptops have SATA 3 ports, so putting one SATA 3 SSD in a SATA 2 port is moot.

        • +1

I wouldnt trust paypals buyer protection. This guy could easily scam a good % of people who actually paid thinking they can get a product for 50%+ off retail.

Seems pretty popular in the US to have an alias, open a bank account, get verified, a month later list a low priced item on ebay, Bank on a fair few people reliant on "ebay buyer protection" and withdraw.

Ebay/paypal will only refund you if the funds are actually available to them. Do you think ebay/paypal is going to pay out of their own pocket or claim it on their insurance. A company that makes over 1 billion per quarter doesnt do that giving back money for peoples stupidity

        • I agree, paypal buyer protection or not, I just don't see this being worth the risk.

  • +1

Elsternwick is out of stock! but limited stock will arive tomorrow after 12 noon. so i just got mine from Clayton!

    • Did they mention if they'd honour this deal after today?

      • Didn't ask! I spoke to a them on the phone they took a while to confirm its $69. When i got there the rep checked with someone and gave it for $69

Ahh! the Elsternwick store! Didnt ask them again, will wait for their call back!

  • Seller is from the UK, and maybe he is a scammer then again maybe not, only time will tell… the thing is that the reason they are so cheap is because he has 9843 of them to sell… how he came to have so many is anyone's guess.

    • So this guy, who has no previous ebay account, managed to score 9000+ drives, all in perfect condition. Doesn't that seem a little odd? Lets say he paid $20 each for them, it means that he outlaid $180,000 for drives even though he has been in the game only a month? Maybe he won a Nigerian lottery.

I can understand a normal retail outlet scoring a few hundred/thousand on a special deal, but someone with no retail (or at least no retail they own up to/link to) experience just happened to beat the other retailers to buy these? Really?
The 16 positive reviews including 13 for items he bought, and 3 sold items. The sold feedback were lodged today and bought by people today with very low feedback themselves.

This could not scream scam more if it the seller was Mr.Scammy_Scamsalot.

If you get a small usb stick in the post, and he says woops, my bad, just send it back return by registered international post and I will refund, will you do that too in the hope of getting your money back? If you do, cost you more, if you don't you won't win paypal dispute. 200 suckers who can't be bothered with paypal dispute = $6000. Hmm, not a bad return really.

      • +1

Maybe he found a container load full of them! LOL

        • how about you buy one and tell us how you go with ebays buyer protection and papals dispute process

Bought two from Centrecom Sunshine, they had no problem selling at $69 each. I have opened up the drive, as expected, mSATA inside, which is the same as the M3M version (even the PCB layout looks the same) that sells for over $100.

    • whoa @BobTheDragon, you traveled across Melbourne to get the SSD, respect… i got another 3 from the Hawthorn store today, and they were really cool about the pricing.

      • +1

hehe, my house is close to Sunshine, 15min drive was not too bad.

  • +1

Some other good deals that I saw at Centrecom Hawthorn.

    128GB Plextor PX-128M5S SDD - $79
    1TB Toshiba Canvio USB3.0 Portable HDD - $79
    1TB Buffalo USB3.0 Portable HDD - $79

All about $10 cheaper than elsewhere.
