Pentax Q Camera + 8.5mm f1.9 Lens for $199.95 (+ $9.95 Shipping) at Ted's Cameras

1180

Yeah I know, who cares about the Pentax Q when you can get larger sensor mirrorless cameras like Micro Four Thirds or the NEX systems? I myself am already heavily invested in Micro Four Thirds. But (1) this is a pretty sweet price, and (2) it seems like it's actually capable of taking some very nice looking pics at the hands of a competent shooter. Check out the real world user review below for some thoughts and sample pics.

http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-q/194467-pentax-q-…

I haven't done an extensive search so I don't know if this is the cheapest but the nearest price I've found is close to double the price of this. Whether or not it's good value, I'll leave that up to you. I think there's already a newer model so you might want to keep that in mind if you're thinking of getting this. EDIT: Apparently it's been discontinued. Thanks for the info shawn_low.

See below for the description on Ted's.

"Does size matter? When it comes to cameras, yes. Introducing the smallest interchangeable lens camera on the market, the Pentax Q. Designed for those wanting a camera which they can fully control, change lenses over and fit in their pocket, the Pentax Q delivers. When you consider the size of the 12 Megapixel sensor, the Q’s image quality truly is miraculous, and the dramatic price plummet since its release has made it all the more affordable for those wanting a dynamic and pocket-sized camera. The Pentax Q still offers Full High Definition video recording, and even in-camera HDR rendering. The Q really is a great thing in a small package."

And some quick specs:

EDIT: Try out this code 'VE5OFF' for 5% off.

EDIT: I haven't tried it myself but the code may not be active anymore.

There's also a Pentax Q thread on the forum http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/84849 for anyone who'd like to discuss anything about the camera that isn't related to this deal (initial thoughts, sharing pics, etc).

From Ted's Cameras:

  • it says its a ted's camera member exclusive, does it require membership?

    • I just bought one and it didn't ask me for my membership or anything. I don't think I'm a member, I'm just subscribed to their newsletter.

    • +1

Just ordered one for no reason and will say goodbye to my SONY a55, anyone interested?

      • Yeah i'll take it. Cheers

  • +2

    seem like a good one
here a review from Steve Huff
    http://www.stevehuffphoto.com/2011/09/27/the-pentax-q-digita…
    I getting one tmr

    • I just finished reading the review. He seems pretty happy with it even when it was $799. I can't wait to get my hands on it.

      • +4

Lawd I really wouldn't rely on Steve Huff for a clear-eyed assessment. Has he ever written a negative review? You could give him a Sagem mobile phone camera from 2002 and he'd find something positive to say.

This is not to dismiss the Pentax Q, but there are other places I'd be looking for purchase advice.

        • +2

Wait till you get Huff started on Leicas. LOL.

But judge the camera by the photos posted.

  • +1

Love it, got a Pentax k-5 and a Pentax k100d Super IR modded and they're simply amazing, most underrated camera brand.

    • May I ask what is modded?

      • I opened it up and took the IR filter off as I do a lot of astrophotography, and nebula emit a lot of light that is in the infrared spectrum that usually gets cut out. It's just my project camera - next project is peltier cooling to bring down the sensor temperature to allow for lower noise in long exposures.

  • +7

I just received an email with this code 'VE5OFF' apparently for 5% off. I've already bought the thing (doh) so I can't try this out and I'm not sure if it's only a one off code. But feel free to give it a shot. If two or more people can confirm that it worked for them then I'll add it to the description.

    • +1

      yeah it works

    • +1

      yes, I tried
      it down $10 for the Pentax Q + 8.5mm

      • Sweet, I'll add it to the description.

    • It worked, and it also takes care of the shipping cost too… sweet!!! Thank you so much!!!

      • You got free shipping too? Nice! I opted to pick up in store but now I wish I got free shipping instead :p

        • +1

          I think he mean
the %5 OFF is enough to take care of the shipping fee :P

        • Ahh gotcha :)

        • +2

No my invoice total is only $189.95, I hope that they don't cancel my order since stock is limited.

        • really, I chose to pick up too.
Honestly can't wait more than 2 days for a new toy :P

        • I got the same deal as maogua, total of $189.95 . It may have been because I selected store pickup, then changed back to delivery. Might as well try…

  • Hooray! Was just thinking about getting the Q this morning, honest! Bought one! Fantastic deal!

Ok, whats great about this camera: It makes most lenses 50mm and up into extreme telephotos due to the crop factor of the sensor.

  • should i get this if i already have the canon s100? the s100 offer better performance but i just like the idea of a interchangeable lens

    • yes, the Q is better. But only if you want more control.

  • Hi. I'm not clear on if it comes with the additional lenses or if they are separate. Any one comment?

  • +2

    THANK YOU. LUV YOU OZBARGZ

  • +1

Awesome deal, thanks! I couldn't resist!

  • Argh! I've been so tempted to try this little bugger out and now for the price, it's so tempting! Must resist!!

  • +3

If this guy doesn't convince you to buy the Q I don't know what will http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8QdMmI7RyM I'm soooo close to being $200 poorer!

    • I read some of the comments briefly and apparently the new firmware has focus peaking. Sweet! I can't wait to try it out with my C-mount/CCTV lenses.

      • +3

        Sigh I gave in lol

        • Ha! Sorry for doing my part in making you $200 poorer. I just finished the video and it was nice to see his enthusiasm for it. I can't wait to go out and shoot with it.

      • where to get fitting for it mate, I have the lens for my nex5n

        • What lens are you talking about? I have some Canon FD and C-mount lenses that I use on my Micro Four Thirds cameras but I'll need to get some Pentax Q adapters on eBay.

        • Is there D-mount adapter out there available for the little Q? I figure with the sensor this small, D might work as well…

        • oh I mean the adapters
the 35mm F/1.7 from slr magic is the one i talk about
          will search ebay though

        • I was just looking into it actually. Check out this link http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-q/165368-sample-im…

There are D-mount adapters apparently. There's a Japanese review in that link above. I used Chrome to translate it to English but I suppose you can just check out the sample pics. It doesn't seem like C and D-mount lenses perform well on the Pentax Q. But a C-mount adapter is around $5 and I have a couple of lenses not covered in that review (one is a modified CS-mount fisheye lens) so it'd be nice to try it out and maybe write a little review of my own even if performance isn't great.

        • Ah I got that lens too. There's this adapter I might get http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/FOCUS-INFINITY-16mm-C-mount-movie…

          It's actually a bit more than $5.

        • well that's great
at all, we enjoin the fun part of photography and specially all those gear :D

  • Hopefully there'll still be stock by tomorrow afternoon. ._. so tantalising.

  • Is there anyone knows where to get the lens? If I can get telephoto lens easily and cheap, I think i will take this?
Browsed ted's website, but couldn't get any q lens.
    Thanks

    • I'd just go on ebay. Also, great lenses to get would be the K-mount regular pentax lenses if you buy a K to Q Mount adaptor.

Keep in mind that the small sensor size will make any adapted lenses meant for larger sensor sizes telephotos!

    • have you thought about searching on staticice?

  • +1

crap….i bought the Nex 5N last month and it's sitting in front of me and yet i just ordered this for pick up for $189. something's amiss here, that money possibly could have gone to a samsung tab 2. oh well! OZB 4ever then..

  • Just ordered one. $189 delivered. Thanks OP.

    • No probs, I just wish I could've used the code too and saved $10 plus a trip to the city :p

  • Bought one just to have a laugh. Looks so damn cute!

$189 after coupon code and pick up from local store.

FYI, the camera has been discontinued hence the low low price. If only lenses were going cheap!

Update: didn't realise the discount gave 5% off PLUS free shipping! I would have opted for that as it seems to say that website needs 24 hours to confirm store pickup (ie: implying that it may not be possible??)

  • What is with all these special deals these few days. This camera is really good my friend had one for around 500 dollars from overseas, the picture quality kills lot of the cheaper DSLR.

  • +3

Damn you op. Here I was ready to sell all my Pentax gear and change systems and this comes up! I bought it and will be in serious trouble with the missus. Now I'm thinking of buying a K-mount adaptor and sticking my Tamron 90mm f2.8 macro and a couple of extension tubes on it for some serious fun. :)

    • +2

Believe me, I'm already feeling a bit of guilt from dragging you guys with me and making you all $190-200 poorer :p

Have fun adapting your various lenses! For me, photography became a whole lot more fun when I got into mirrorless and started adapting all sorts of lenses to it :)

      • +6

I think you owe it to all of us by organising a OzB Pentax Q photo walk. A bunch of tight arses walking around with matching clothes from thehut or some other bargain from UK last week and tiny cameras because they were too cheap to buy real ones :D

        • +1

          That's not a bad idea :)

        • +1

          …and eating hungry jacks

        • and wearing Bose headphone… cough cough

        • +2

Love the idea, we might just be up for that!

  • +3

    Trustworthy review here.
    http://www.steves-digicams.com/camera-reviews/pentax/q/steve…
Don't need it but bought one. Already have Canon DSlR, Sony and fujifilm p&s and now this one.
Oh my God….how many cameras a man ever needs? Thanks OP and Ozbargain that I am $189 poorer tonight.

  • PS: this is Ted's regular page for the Pentax Q:

    http://www.teds.com.au/digital-slr-cameras/pentax-q?limit=al…

  • Done - Can't wait to use this as my carry-everywhere camera!

  • +10

Also, when you get the camera do the firmware upgrade for the camera to fix the input lag.

  • +1

Just read a bucketload of positive reviews, with some pretty impressive images. Trigger pulled again, damn you OzB, lol.

Stock getting very limited according to the site.

  • got one thanks!

i hate ozbargain! spent ~$200 on HP N40L last week.

Then.. for this week spent another ~$200 on this..

but keep the good deals coming… thanks!!!

  • thanks OP, great deal. My mrs has wanted this camera since we saw it a few months ago, she loves it purely because it's the size of a finger nail and fairly feature-rich. I was put off due to the price it carried with it vs other options that were around. Have ordered it now for $189.95 with the discount coupon.

    champion!

  • Started down the route of cherry-picking the positives, but then I checked myself. $189 saved toward something that makes a lot more sense.

Watching the Blunty3000 review gave me flashbacks of the enthusiasm Kevin Trudeau's infomercials could whip up in me. Outstanding salesman but not the most trustworthy source.

    • lolwut? that's a hell of a lot of (little) camera for $189. The only thing that makes more sense is a 10% discount coupon

    • Curious - what would you be putting your $189 towards (entry-level camera wise)?

    • I think Ted's has a 14 day returns policy (they even pay return shipping) if that will help you make up your mind. LOL.

  • Already have my own kit but my sister was on the lookout for a camera. She was about a hair's breadth from buying the new Canon EOS M but I showed her this and she loved it on the spot. Saved herself about $700 and got a fantastic camera for her trouble!

    Thanks, bargainjargon!

  • Is this online only deal?

I'm heading to Thailand on Saturday and i don't think it would arrive on time if i bought online.

    • You can buy it online and choose "Pick up from Store" but I am not sure if it will be ready for pick up before you leave..

  • I am thinking that will they ask us for member's number even we didn't key in?

    • stay tune until tmr if you have patient!
      seriously
some of us already place an order and are waiting for the email confirmation of shipping
well they took the payment from my account already, but since there are numbers of order being placed after this thread post, who know :P

  • Great deal, but I'm going to give it a miss since it doesn't come with the stock zoom lens (only the prime) - unless I am reading the description wrong?

    • +1

You're right, but I rather take the prime at the lower price point + compactness…This combo would make a good everyday walkabout camera.

      • Yep, just the prime. Apparently it's the standout lens in the system so I'm cool with it. My go everywhere cam is the Sony RX100 which is f4.9 at the long end so the f1.9 prime should go well with it.

  • +1

Pulled the trigger almost instantly :S No idea how I'm going to explain this to the missus in the morning…

  • stupid question - is the supplied lens a non-zoom lens?

    • +1

Comes with a prime lens, means fixed focal length.

    • +1

Yep, prime lens only. 47mm in FF terms.

  • Not so sure about this, but I have been looking for a smaller camera (was thinking about the LX7) to compliment the DSLR and I guess this beats any standard point and shot.

    • This for me is a throwaway, toss it in the bag point-and-shoot. If I want something to complement a DSLR, I'd look at the X100 or XE1 bu Fuji. Stunning quality.

      • stunning expensive too

        • I picked up the X100 used for less than half price. :-)

  • so many orders going in, i am afraid they will cancel most of the orders if not having enough stocks… we are the non-members will go first… @@

    • i hope your wrong! :( my order is in too!

  • What is better this or an nex3 (older model) with 16mm pancake? Taking cost of a used nex3 at $300-350.

    • nex3 has a much bigger sensor, should be better in pic quality… but i heard the 16mm is not that good tho…

      • My copy of the 16mm is pretty good. I think it's only horrible when you're shooting something fairly close because when shooting far away things, the corners look fine. But who knows, maybe there's some sample variation going on.

I can't compare the two since I haven't used the Pentax Q yet but I find the NEX-3 lacking somewhat. Image quality is fine but I don't feel any sort of excitement when shooting with it which is why I'm just gonna gift it to my uncle. I prefer shooting with my Micro Four Thirds cams and even the Sony RX100 (plus I shot with an NEX-C3 for an afternoon and I liked that a lot more). But that's just my opinion and everyone will feel differently. If you can, go to a store and try it out. If you're not too finicky like me, it might be fine.

It was pretty interesting to shoot wide with the 16mm though (since I love to shoot wide) but not all that practical. Too wide for most things.

  • Ive seen the camera in Japan… It was one tiny camera…
At $200 i dont really care about the image quality… But i have read many good reviews
Im so excited to pick up this baby… Hope my local store has one for pick up as thats what ive done to order one

  • +1

Why do I want this? I'm not even into photography, god damn ozbargain.

    • +8

because it's cheap damn it.. This site was setup to save people money but when you look back it makes you more broke than before, but you get there so cheaply.

      • god damn agree, and I booked one as well, keep on spending a lot of money since I knew this "CHEAP" website T-T

  • Just booked a holiday to Japan this week, and couldn't resist! now to actually start saving some spending money.

  • Thanks Op. From all the comments it sounds like something i can't pass up. Now all i have to figure out is how to make the most of this camera and what lens i should use for what. Total amateur here, but i think this will be a good starting point.

  • FAR OUT!!! BOUGHT IIT!!! 0.0
