Canon EOS 650D 18-55mm IS II Lens Kit $529.00 + $29 Shipping at Kogan

310

This is a great price on the 650D kit from Kogan.

However please be aware that Kogan Canon cameras are grey imports, and whilst Kogan purport to offer an Australian warranty, it definitely [1] isn't as good as a warranty from Canon Australia.

  • price in title???
    or in post??

    • +1

Oh sorry - thanks whoever added it.

  • Price in title, or even description please.

  • 529 + 29 delivery (Melbourne)

  • FYI I went to HN and they had a $100 cash back on this camera. This way, you get local warranty. Bit of a shame as I'm looking for a Nikon 5100 with 18-55 (anyone know where to buy on the cheap non-online???).

    • Oh that's not bad… how much did it work out at?

    • I'm after the same thing! If you find a place, let me know! I'm thinking maybe waiting for the boxing day sales may be the best idea…..

    • I got the D5100 body from JB for $460. Kogan sells it for $409 +$29 shipping. If you buy aus stock you not only get 1 year warranty, but you can get a free extra 12 months from mynikonlife, making it 2 years for just $12 more than Kogan.

If you really want the 18-55mm kit lens you can pick them up on ebay for easily under $100, but I chose to buy a f2.8 17-50mm lens which is far superior for just over $200. I'm really happy with my choice so far… although the video is somewhat limited (in terms of zoom and focus in film)

      • I'm going to go into JB HiFi tomorrow and ask if they can do the Nikon 5100 for $600. Its only $100 more than kogan (including delivery) which is piece of mind. I'll let you know how it goes. A friend bought a 7D Canon from JB, and it was broken from arrival, and JB replaced it no questions asked. I'd imagine it would be a battle to get anything out of Kogan.

        • Yeh worth a try. The reason they dropped the price for me was that at the time harvey norman was selling it for $483.
I said would they price match and they said they would, then I just ummed and ahhed for a while until he dropped it to $460.

Have you considered other lenses though? You'd do well getting a better lens second hand, as the 18-55mm kit lenses are going for even under $80 on ebay and are really only a starter…

        • What lenses would you recommend? I'm looking for something that's not too expensive but would be a bit better than the kit lens.

        • The Nikkor 18-105mm is the lense to have (apparently). Unfortunately I go on holidays on Saturday so have no time to shop around for a lense.

        • There's a reasonable loss of sharpness with the 18-105 even over the 18-55mm.
But it all depends on your requirements. If zoom is a priority, or sharpness or performance in low light.

My personal choice was somewhere in the middle with a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 fixed aperture lens, but others prefer a prime lens. A very individual thing…

        • It seems those lenses are $300+ each, are they that much better than the kit lens for a beginner?
I'd like to get into macro photography (But also have a lens for general use), so maybe I should just buy the kit lens and then spend some money on a decent macro lens instead?

        • Yeh they are more expensive, but you get what you pay for and if you're expecting to get into photography, you'll probably upgrade not far from now anyway. The sharpness is easily discernible when compared to a kit lens, images definitely 'pop' a lot more. Hard to describe, but you know it when you see it.

I'm not sure about lenses for macro photography, might be worth searching forums like dpreview, there are some serious camera buffs there that have probably already posted advice on good macro lenses for the d5100

        • Just as an FYI, I walked into JB HiFi (Elizabeth street, Melbourne) on Friday and asked for the D5100 & 18-55mm @ $600 and got it pretty easy.

Only $100 more than the grey import Kogan product, and with benefit of local warranty, its definitely worth it IMHO.

Just a side note, I've had a play with the 18-55 and it has SFA zoom. Almost regretting not getting the 55-300mm kit.

        • A better option might be the 18-105 lens, as it has roughly the same zoom as the 55-300mm. You could probably sell your 18-55mm lens as new on ebay and buy a used 18-105mm for not much more. The 55-300mm is more suited to things like wildlife photography, and you lose the benefits of the wide angle 18mm lens.

  • For comparisons sake, I looked at the 650D in Ted's the other day - and with a 18-135mm lens (obviously better lens) it was $1099 less $100 cash back. The lenses separately are the budget killers though.

    • This setup is $979 plus postage at Kogan - so in that case, you'd be better off buying local. Other Grey sellers might have better deals though.

The Kogan body only or body+18-55 seems to be a consistently good deal. I'm struggling to not pull the trigger and upgrade :S

      • On the Click Frenzy sale they had another $100 off, so came to less $200 or $899 total.

I'd suggest signing up to their "12 Days of Christmas" promo (http://www.12tedsofchristmas.com.au/service04/day8_12teds_se…), just 2 days ago they had a 24hour $100 off DSLR's again (so $200 after Canon cashback), if you get lucky maybe they'll have something similar before the promo ends.

    • Never buy for advertised prices. Both Ted's as well as JB will go down under $999. If you are ready to purchase straight away for the price you agree on. You got cash back, Au warranty and I got a 3 year Canon Care pack for free at JB. And as I am going overseas early January I will get the GST back as well!
And the 18-135mm STM is a great all round lens for the price.

  • Very good deal IMO. Not a bad camera especially if you use the huge savings you make on some decent lenses…

  • Great price.

  • Great price for the single lens kit, cheapest local I could find was the Top Ryde Camera House $677 (after cash back). Already had some kit lenses so went with the Ryda $579 deal (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/84798) as preferred local warranty.

  • there is some error with the address field (suburb) in the checkout form and now I couldn't complete my checkout :(

  • I just ordered two days ago when it was priced at 599AUD and they have not dispatched the order yet, any chances they would refund me?

    • Ask Kogan. Or cancel and re-order.

    • Ask for price matching.

    • A friend ordered this 2 weeks ago for the deals price ($529). Ive been watching it almost daily as im considering upgrading my 550D to it if/when magic lantern gets updated to support it. I havent seen it rise yet.

  • I've sent them an email, let's see how strong their business ethics are.
