Kmart - Homemaker Capsule Coffee Machine (Nespresso Compatible) $29

I've been wanting a Nespresso compatible coffee machine for months, but didn't want to fork out hundreds for a George Clooney-endorsed one. Kmart's currently having a clearance of their homebrand Homemaker brand Capsule Coffee Machines in-store for $29 - which is quite a saving when you compare it to their price of $89 back in August.
Bought at the Robina Kmart this morning, and they seemed to have a dozen or so in stock. Unfortunately it's not available on their online store.
As for the coffee - it's good. Better than the drip one in my house, and a ton better than instant. I tried it with Piazza D'oro pods, which are currently 2 packs of 10 for $10 at Coles.
EDIT: If anyone is interested at how it looks, here's a photo from the Kmart website. Build quality is pretty solid with what appears to be stainless steel on the outside, and unlike one of my friend's machines, it doesn't leak.
EDIT 2: Some are reporting that the machine is marked as $39 in-store but scanned as $29. Be sure to double-check before you buy!
Image on Shelf Normally $69, marked on shelf.
(This is my first submission to OzB, everyone - any tips for improving this in future?)

+1 voteI've managed to dig up a small image from the Kmart website, as well as a blog post from the Gadget Guy from August. I might also take a photo if anyone's interested after this storm passes!

Yeah - the one I bought on Thursday was $39 though - others have posted about it scanning for $29
We have a genuine Nespresso machine, I bought this one to take to the office :) Pretty impressed with the flavour of the coffee - machine is perhaps a little noisier than the Delonghi.

If you thought Piazza d'Oro was good then you'll think Nespresso better. This from personal experience with the free P d'O ones they gave out.
+1 votegreenpossum on 28/12/2012 - 16:31 ¶'Fraid not, I just drink the free ones at the office. :)
BTW, the reason the P d'O ones are foil wrapped is because the holes are prepunched in the (plastic) pod while the Nespresso ones are punched by the machine. So they need a wrapper to keep the aroma from leaking away. I assume P d'O did this to bypass the Nespresso patents.
superforever on 28/12/2012 - 15:48 ¶I am always wondering in term of the coffee itself with Nespresso pod will there be any difference between this and Nespresso machine?

I'm not actually too sure myself. I believe that some of the more expensive Nespresso machines actually have a container that automatically feed the capsules into the machine, but I can't confirm that.
I reckon the quality of the coffee pods matter more than the machine, in my opinion.

I did a bit of research myself, actually. According to a quick Google search, unfortunately the Aldi ones won't work, but I've discovered that Woolies/Gloria Jeans brand ones do.
Be warned, I haven't tried these myself and these people on the Internet may be telling lies.
+1 voteThe Gloria Jeans ones work in the Aldi machine, however, the filters in the capsule are at the opposite end to the Aldi ones. Because of this you get some coffee grains coming through and have to slowly release the handle so the Gloria Jeans capsule doesn't get stuck in the machine when ejecting it.
bestespresso on 30/12/2012 - 11:25 ¶gloria Jeans capsules use caffitaly system while aldi ones use K-fee systems and they are not compatible with each other.

I have tried the Piazza D'oro (all strengths taste exactly the same to me) and the Espresso Intensso (flavourless), these both fit the Nespresso machines. I am afraid nothing comes close to the flavour and taste of the original Nespresso pods, each of them have their own distinct flavour, and tried there full range. I am still looking for a cheaper alternative but yet to find one that tastes any good. Maybe their is another brand to try out there, I'm all ears.
Nespresso are expensive to buy online (can't wait for an ozbargainer to find a cheap deal) because of postage, and I don't get into Brisbane city to buy direct from the shop.

I can confirm our capsules do work with the machine from K-mart

the.piemaker on 28/12/2012 - 17:03 ¶Does this come with a milk frother? Or do we have to heat/froth externally and pour it in afterwards?
+2 votesmonggoking on 28/12/2012 - 21:13 ¶i had 2000ish flybuys points handy. converted them to $10. used it on top of the discount. got the machine for $19! bargain! thanks itosh1o!
jackofspade on 28/12/2012 - 18:10 ¶Dame it! I bought one about 2 months ago for $65. Beware the machine leaks water underneath. I had to take it back for a replacement twice before I got one that doesn't leak. Also the coffee extraction is weak and slow.

I picked one up yesterday at Southland — no leaks, although the manual suggests checking the water-jug is correctly seated, if your machine is leaking.
I agree that the coffee extraction is quite weak, oddly from the very first cup — this machine takes about a minute to extract a single shot, whereas $400+ Nescafé pod machines take 20<30 secs. Inevitably scale build-up slows even $6000+ commercial machines to a minute or more with long term use, even with regular descaling.
+2 votesBe careful with this one guys. Kmart's "homemaker" brand (along with Big W's "adobe" and Target's "modern essentials) are of horrendous quality, even for the price. These brands have all seen countless recalls in the past (particularly the Target and Kmart brands which come out of the same factory, only with different branding).

For sure. As other posters have said, still far better than that instant coffee crap. And if you don't have/want to buy a milk frother this would still be good for iced coffee black coffee. I'd just be keeping a very close eye on the power cord and would never ever have it even switched on unattended due to the brand's appalling safety history.

at this price, you could buy 10+ of them (ie the price of the cheapest Nespresso model) and store them in the cupboard for when they need replacing, then return to Kmart within warranty period for a refund.
believe it or not, some odd people actually prefer the taste of Blend-43/Moccona/etc! but for the average Joe, this machine makes a good shot from the Piazza D'oro pods with crema and flavour that beats many takeaway places (ie. Michels/DonutKing/MrsFields/CupcakeFactory/McDs), don't expect it to beat a good barista made coffee — all it needs is a good milk frother to go with it.
also ideal for making Tira Misu or Café Affogato — great for summertime desserts!
quarrymaster on 02/01/2013 - 19:03 ¶Instant tends to have different taste. I prefer instant for ice coffee or mixed with milk tea Asian style. The pods are for the cafe style which you can't get with any instant brand, even with frothed milk.
These pod coffee makers if nothing else sure make it a whole lot less messy!
+1 votewinewizard on 28/12/2012 - 21:00 ¶Just picked one up at Keysborough Vic.
Had plenty in stock on aisle end ,overhead sign says $69 ,but scans at $29.
Does anyone know wat brands of pods fit and has anyone seen any refillable pods to buy.
I love my Lavassa and special blends.
i never used one, was almost tempted to get the dolce gusto one at HVN, but sinces the tablet price screw up i held back. going get one tomorrow shows only 2 buttons on it i brought the caps at woolies cappaccino one is the milk i guess and the other the coffee i assume i put the milk one in first and press the first button then the same for the coffee?

The buttons on the machine are for a small cup of coffee and a large cup of coffee, both of which dispense the relevant amount of hot water. Unfortunately we've discovered only Nespresso-compatible capsules will work (like the official brand and Piazza D'oro), so most of the ones you buy from Woolies, especially the Dolce Gusto ones that contain milk, won't work.
I hope that's cleared a few things up for you!

FTR: the Dolce Gusto milk pods ($0.50/ea) are ordinary milk powder, and as such your coffee will resemble a baby chino in more ways than one — definitely try before you buy, the taste of powdered milk is not easily forgotten and though the coffee grounds itself is at least as good, if not better than the Nespresso pods, your latte will be undrinkable for most people.

We must've been there at about the same time. Went to Big W and got a $10 battery operated whizz milk frother. They did have a separate Philips milk frother cup thingy for about $70 but figured I'm spending half that for the coffee machine and coffee that's probably not worth it. Anyone else know about a cheaper milk frother and where to get?

Guys just be aware that buying this machine is akin to buying a cheap inkjet printer - the machine is cheap, sure, but you dish out $$ in terms of the proprietary refill, or in this case, the coffee pods. For those that don't drink coffee all that often, stick with coffee from a cafe, but for regular drinkers this could be a viable option.
This is coming from an owner of a Nespresso machine :)
+12 votesTry the exact opposite of what you just said.
The great thing about these machines is the pods, they last ages because they are individually sealed and give you the same taste every time with no effort.
This machine is perfect for those that don't drink coffee often. If you are really into coffee then get a coffee machine that grinds your beans and makes you a great cup of coffee.
Going to a cafe = $3.50 a cup
Machine = $29 + ~.60c per cup inc milk, coffee and sugar. So this machine will pay for itself in 12 cups of coffee.

Yes, a GOOD cafe coffee is still better than a Nespresso but for a lot of people they've decided that the cost equation is such that it makes sense to purchase a Nespresso instead of going to a cafe.
E.g. cafe at $3 a cup
Nespresso at $250 a machine and 60c a capsule
You get breakeven after ~105 cups of coffee
2 cups of coffee a day you get payback after (assuming 20 working days a month) 2.6 months
I'll say two things:
1) due to the limitation in the amount of ground coffee in each capsule, you need to use two capsules in order to achieve the same strength as a regular store bought coffee (eg. The single shot of espresso draws only 40ml, meaning you only get a tiny cappuccino size of 120ml with each capsule, unless you like a weak watery cappuccino that is)
2) my original post was that buying store bought coffee would be better for the occasional drinker, I don't doubt that for frequent users a Nespresso could be a financially viable alternative. If you consider that the cheapest price of a capsule is $0.69, and the minimum price of a decent store bought coffee would be $3.50, and assume an infrequent drinker drinks two coffees a week, it would take over 13 months to break even.
+2 votesstacey_jade80 on 29/12/2012 - 08:58 ¶Bought one of these this morning at Kmart Robina. They had at least 40 of them on in stock.
Great buy!!!
+2 votesjackofspade on 29/12/2012 - 17:04 ¶I'm tempted to do the same but I just can't bring myself to do it. I would have to blatantly lie in their face that the machine is broken.
+1 votewonderland on 29/12/2012 - 10:34 ¶Plenty at Eastland of Ringwood, show price at $69 but scan at $29.
+2 votesPlenty available at Glendale NSW. The sticker says $29.
So far we find this one way better than the Aldi machine we've had for a year - much better build quality, smaller, quieter, and the ability to program how much water is dispensed. The coffee is a good temp for us and the output is almost indistinguishable from a real nespresso machine.
Thanks for posting!

unintended88 on 29/12/2012 - 14:17 ¶Kmart at chatswood chase doesn't have any on the shelf. But ask a staff member and they'll get one from the store room. Conveniently, there's a nespresso store at the chase as well so we stocked up on capsules this afternoon too.
unintended88 on 29/12/2012 - 14:18 ¶Just tried using it. Bit noisy but comes out great. Fantastic find OP!
+1 voteDoes anyone know if the Officeworks Caffe Vergnano pods work in this machine? They say they are Nespresso compatible and I thought I recalled seeing it posted here, but it's either gone or I'm mistaken.
And for a complete newbie - where do we get "official" Nespresso pods from and what's the going price?
Cheers
+2 votesOfficeworks have two types, the Nespresso compatible ones and also the Caffitaly ones.
Only the Nespresso compatible pods work.
You can also get Piazza D'oro ones from Coles on special - 2 boxes for $10 (10 capsules in each box). They also work fine, I tested mine last night.
Nespresso can be bought online or in their specialty Nespresso shops
Thanks nafe - I tried the Vergnano pods from Officeworks and they worked fine, $5.49/10 pack. Couldn't get the Piazza D'oro ones from Coles as my local only had the strongest flavour available and wanted to sample a few pods before I stock up.
Result was good - eager to try a Nespresso sampler pack of some sort when I can find one.
