    plus $5.99 postage!

  • +8

HAHAHA a saving of $234 not likely. just because people get ripped off with these monster cables doesnt mean you are saving $234 now.

  • +8

Still overpriced for a HDMI cable.

  • +18

I almost want to go into Harvey Norman and ask them to price match just to see the reaction. Then I would leave.

    • +3

Please! please! do it .. and take a pic and post on the forum :) it would make my day :)

    • +5

they would probably match it, they still make 50% profit :)

      • while the margin in monster (and cables in general) is massive, they dont buy monster cables for $10 and sell them for $249

the floor 'cost' is set to about about 100% margin with some hidden rebates etc behind that (yes, still a massive markup, but its probably in-line with most cloth stores)

        • Maybe they should look at finding an alternative supplier .

    • I would like to go and offer to sell them one for half of their price !!

    • +7

Just rang them, first of all he couldn't find the part number (they mustn't sell many premium HDMI cables!).
But he did come up with a product of Monster Cable (MC500HD 2M) which lists for $149 - but he'd do me a favor and drop it down to $100 for me.
      Rofl.

  • +5

Nothing premium about Monster. Price is still a rip off

    • -6

Its still a bargin, its like getting an overpriced BMW for 90% of and claiming its still a rip off compared to a toyota. I know monster is not comparable to a BMW but the concept is solid.

      • +4

Concept is hardly solid since a BMW has better/different materials and engineering.

An HDMI cable basically only varies in the thickness of the shielding and maybe the connectors but not much else.

      • +9

It's more like someone has been slapping a Ferrari logo on a Toyota and selling them at Ferrari prices, and now they decided to "discount" it to BMW prices. Hardly a bargain if you realise that the car is still a Toyota.

      • +2

        Apples and oranges…

      • +5

        Worst analogy ever

        • +4

IM GOING TO KILL MY SELF NOW

        • +4

Maybe best to refrain from posting COTD "bargains" from now on. I've learned that the hard way too;)

  • +2

Cable quality is not terribly imporatnt for HDMI cables, especially ones under 10m. Because the signal is digital, as long as there is a connection the information is transfered. For a really long cable, or one in a wall maybe go for a higher end cable, but for anything like this, do your self a favor and buy the cheapest you can. I think even target or big 2 or something should be able to do an HDMI cable for less than this.

If you are a brand whore this is a decent deal, you just don't need it.

  • +2

$15 is overpriced, $21 (inc postage) is way overpriced.

$249 is a Harvey Norman of a price.

Go of fleabay or walk in to any half reputable computer shop (msy, cnet tech…) and pick one up for less than $10, if you don't mind the wait then buy from china.

If you like throwing money away and waiting longer than you would to have it shipped from china then buy from catchoftheday.

    • +1

As the good-old saying "Hardly Normal"

I am sure that those so-called "Hip" guys would buy this Monster Cable for that price if it had the Beats logo on it :)

  • I don't understand the negging of this deal.

Just because it's an overpriced HDMI cable doesn't mean it's a good deal price wise. We don't neg Apple deals do we? $1k for a MBA, you serious Apple?

HDMI is HDMI, as far as I'm aware a $2 cable is just as good as a $20. Digital stream and all.

    • -1

Thanks mate, my first post, thought people get a kick out of it because everyone hates harvey but obviously its all his reps on here ;)

      • I agree that this is a good deal on the item (note, I did not negg it) but it is kinda a waste of money considering it has no benifits to a standard HDMI cable. That said, if you want the brand name (or want to resell it) this is a decent deal.

      • everyone hates harvey

but everyone hates Con Of The Day more… bein COTD its probably grey market import and a fake anyway.

seriously mods, cant you stop noobs posting COTD deals as a first post and save them from the inevitable negfest?

        • ill delete the post, sorry.

  • another monster product

  • regardless of the 'quality' and 'price' argument (yes, monster is massively overpriced, you're paying for their marketing and ferraris)

I would hope that cotd has these from a genuine supplier because theres plenty of fake monster cables out there (that likely work as well as the originals)

    • as well, if not better.

  • Cheaper on know reliable ebay seller:

    2M HDMI Cable v1.4 - $3.88

My HDMI cables take less than a week to arrive from HK…

  • +8

This is like a perfect storm isn't it.
COTD & Monster coming together, you can just feel the OzB love in the air.

  • This deal is for a Monster cable not an unbranded hdmi cable.

    • yes, and if you are reselling this then it is a good deal, but as HDMI is a digital signal cable quality over short distances isn't terribly important.

    • +1

If there was a deal for manure from a black angus for 3 times the price as standard cattle manure it wouldn't be worth it would it? It's all the same crap.

      • Farmer?

  • For all those that say 'a cable is just a cable', can you tell me if there is any quality difference in using cables containing different contact materials &/or shielding materials?
    Think hard before you answer!!!

    • +3

Yes, there is a difference, but only for analogue cables. Over short distances quality does not matter on digital cables.

      • +1

Also, I supposed if you plug/unpulg a lot it might be worth having a higher quality cable to stand up to wear and tear.

        • I've had issues with cheap & free with another product HDMI cables in the past!
And yes, usually it is in the plug/contact area. I became a little tired of 'wiggling' one of my leads so onto the street it went!
The other BIG issue is for anyone that has WDTV media players (like me)! Quite a few cheap cables will not work with them!

        • +2

There's a difference between super cheap crap and good priced cheap cables.

It would depend on where you got your cable from my friend. Just cause you got a $1 HDMI cable from china doesn't mean that other $3-$4 cables from other places are the same.

        • +4

I don't know anything about the cables you have bought in the past and I don't doubt that there are some really crappy ones floating arround. I speak only about the science of the cables (which is how monster markets) you don't need gold contacts or lots of shielding on digital cables.

That said, fancy cables like this often come with good industrial design resulting in better quality and durability.

All the $5 HDMI cables I have bought over the years still work fine. That said, I usually hook them up and don't touch them for a year or two. In the end it is a personal choice. I would go for cheaper and if it doesn't work from day one send it back. Most ebay sellers and places like dx.com will give you either a full refund or a replacement unit if the product is DOA.

        • Have we also considered modern day electronics and the features they have?
Ethernet channels, Internet sharing, Audio return, 3D, etc.
Isn't this why they have standards nowadays with differing speed ratings too? eg. v1.3, v1.3c, v1.4, v1.4a?

        • +1

Snoop: Yes, and the standards are exactly why brand doesn't matter. Just get a cable to the HDMI version that you need (1.4 for 3D).

  • +1

It says $17.80 when i load up the web page. Has it gone up in price by a few dollars.

    • not for me, ill keep checking

    • Why are you asking Blatros when you're the rep? :S

  • +4

The only time I would recommend a monster cable would be for their lifetime warranty. The fact COTD mentions a 12 month warranty makes me wary about the origins and geniune-ness of this cable..

    • good point

  • Your right the cart says $14.99 but down lower on the page it says this. Conflicting pricing info on the page

Monster 2m HDMI Cable w/ Bonus Adapter
Today just $17.80 for a top brand accessory!

My guess is they were originally going to charge $17.80 but later changed it to $14.99 and forgot to update that details on the page.

  • +2

some people seriously need to be a little smarter. the monster cable is an old joke. i got my hdmi cables for $2/$3. work great!

    • Me too, have never had a problem with cheaper cables

    • -4

IT WAS A JOKE FOR ANYONE THAT KNOWS OZB FAR OUT SOME PPL ARE THICK

  • +1

not worthy of being posted on ozbargain.

  • +1

This is not the $249 cable. Official page: http://www.monstercable.com/productdisplay.asp?pin=7060&id=9…
Even monster call it a "NO FRILLS" cable. "Ships in a Poly-Bag" they didn't even spend on the nice box !

    • +1

Yeah, at least take you out for dinner before shafting you… (a la southpark ipad episode)

  • Yeah must be their lowest quality cable. Says it's a promo cable does that mean they were given away on promotions.

Definitely not worth any where near that $249 that was originally quoted in the topic.

  • +1

Just to make it clear while I agree about all the BS over Monster cables this one is not one of the ones that they retail at $XXX … you can find what looks to be the same Monster cable in the USA for $7-10 quite easily.

So yes if this were the $250 HDMI for $15 it would be a bargain, just for the fact you could resell it if nothing else (Broden!)… but its just one of their cheapo HDMI cables at a not particularly cheap price.

  • While it seems like a good deal, please dont be fooled or try to fool other users in thinking its worth $21. At the end of the day posting a full priced cable of ebay as some here have shown is still a better deal than the one you have shown us here.
I won't neg since its a 'discount', But i wont plus as its still a horrible deal.

  • +2

Come back when you are mature enough to use this website:)

  • I'd prefer these http://www.overclockers.com.au/image.php?pic=images/newspics…

Soon to be stocked at HN i will be placing pre order

  • A more expensive cable general looks nicer, like this Monster one. Plus, a cheap rubbish cable from ebay may do the same job as a pricier cable, but also could break over time due to cheap components and build (or might not even work straight out of the box).

Some people would pay a premium for a nicer looking cable. I would. But not $20. Maybe ~$7 instead of ~$3.

Don't sweat it OP, if you post a deal for an HDMI cable that's over 2 bucks, you'll get negged at OzBargain.

    • Thought I'd even the votes because there's nothing wrong about your comment!!!

A more expensive cable general looks nicer, like this Monster one.

how does a cable you cant see thats hidden behind the tv matter how it LOOKS? seriously? what a stupid uninformed comment.

Plus, a cheap rubbish cable from ebay may do the same job as a pricier cable,

        exactly everyones point….

but also could break over time

a cheap cable could also turn into a billion dollars while its hidden behind your tv… both things are about as likely…. its just another stupid uninformed comment…..

Some people would pay a premium for a nicer looking cable.

and some people are morons in this world, whats your point?

        I would.

oh, erm.. i see… thats awkward.. i didnt mean you by my previous comment..

Don't sweat it OP, if you post a deal for an HDMI cable that's over 2 bucks, you'll get negged at OzBargain.

if you post a deal on OzB that isnt actually a bargain you will get negged, no matter what product it is… if you dont like it why dont you try and start your own site OzNotActuallyBargains and see how you go?

        • +1

oh, erm.. i see… thats awkward.. i didnt mean you by my previous comment..

          Gold

        • +1

Harsh, because you're generalising and assuming that EVERYONE hides their cabling! Not always the case! If they're on a swing arm, mounted to brick, etc. I know there are products to group and hide them, but like I said, Not EVERYONE does this!
And how many people have alloy wheels in there boot, tidied up under their bonnet, buy more expensive brands of socks or jocks? Should I go on?

And, as for the quality, technically speaking, the cable may transfer a signal in the same way, but there is definitely a line between cheap and rubbish! When it comes to build construction of the cable, I had 1 that was supplied free with another product that had to be wiggled occasionally to get the signal to transfer. (And no, nothing wrong with the plug in the box as I've never had an issue since replacing it.) And I've had another cheap one from BigW where the actual plastic housing of the male plug obviously wasn't moulded properly and slid down along the cable!

So his points are plausible, and for him, maybe justifiable!

You also broke his comment "Plus, a cheap rubbish cable from ebay may do the same job as a pricier cable, but also could break over time due to cheap components and build (or might not even work straight out of the box)." into 2 parts making it seem like 2 individual conflicting points!

        • +3

if you post a deal on OzB that isnt actually a bargain you will get negged,

Fine words from one who has never posted a deal….

  • If it was 'HDMI by dr dre' , lots of people will buy it :)

Apologies for the poor quality, I wanted to make it look like a product that Dre would endorse so I used Microsoft Paint.

        love your work

        • I deleted this dam post because i was being flamed and started feeling like crap and now someone moved it and its constantly on the front page :/
