Hmmm…next house will have to be next to McDonald's.

    • Could you imagine the smell? Bet that travels further than their internet connetion :-)

      • Isn't is Jungry Hacks that points its "kitchen" exhaust fans onto the footpath in front of the "restaurant"???
        [ :- { )

    Big move by McDonalds!

There are some terms and conditions or FAQs which you might find useful to know here http://mye65.blogspot.com/2008/11/mcdonalds-free-wifi-what-y…

  • This is good news. Now we will be catching up to the UK, where all McDonald's stores offer free wifi, and a lot of Burger Kings do too.

  • Free Wi-Fi is good but I can't say the same about their food

    • +2

I thought the whole point is that you'll be too busy checking out the latest deals on OzBargain via their free Wi-Fi, that you cannot remember how bad the food was…

  • +1

50 mb Limit, but still VERY GOOD value considering it is free and maccas is everywhere.

Don't be too critical on their food. The Cafe range is quite good and their deli choices aren't that bad either. Just stay away from the traditionals like big Mac + large coke.

    • +2

Keep in mind that once your 50mb is up all you have to do is accept the terms and conditions again and you get another fiddy megs…and so on and so on.

Also the wifi works from most of their carpark spots (or at least the closer ones, sometimes it helps to open the car door or window :)

      • Ah,,, metalised window tinting film strikes again!
        [ :- { )

  • About 2 months late on the news, but worthy of spreading anyway.

  • Hmmm interesting, so they won't care if people decide to go into macca's with laptops just to sit their all day long and pretty much not buy any food just to use the free wifi? I wonder if they thought about that yet? :P
and then don't forget all macca's carparks will now become internet drive in's!
    hahaha

  • In UK I used to wander in, purchase a coffee (which, by the way, was pretty good quality) and boot up my EEE901. It requires that you enter an email address but it doesn't have to be genuine and then you get 24 hours free wi-fi. In some of the quieter places, students especially would stay all morning or afternoon.

    Cheers, Dio

  • I thought this was already in place at DacMonalds for some time?
Perhaps it only applied to very selected stores, or I'd confused reports of o'seas (UK?) infrastructure…
    [ :- { )

    • They've had WiFi at Maccas for ages - but WiFi used to cost. It was Telstra WiFi and you had to pay Telstra's rates for it.

  • About time to this countrys so far behind europe its unbeliveable mc donalds in the uk have been giving this for over 2 years

    • You do realise that the UK is a completely different country to Australia, right? I'd guess that the cost of Internet access and laws in Australia are two of the main reasons that wifi is not more freely available. There aren't many open WAPs nationwide; there are for Optus customers etc; but not open wifi AFAIK.

That's fantastic news, will make travel in Aus so much easier!

The most annoying part about this is they don't have free wifi in their airport stores or even their stores near the airport (The Mascot store has no wifi, pay or otherwise and that's outside of the airport, but still on airport property I guess..I was planning on killing time the other day while waiting to pick someone up from Sydney Airport, and no darn wifi!)

      • Yeh, I know - although some of the airports have free wifi in certain areas, but paid in others. I think at Melbourne it's free in international, but paid in domestic? Sydney domestic is paid i think, can't remember about international.

  • This was at my local probably at least 2 years ago! Cool.

    • Yes, but you used to have to pay for it, now it's free.

      • Really? I never tried it myself but I was told it was free….

    Australian broadband is woeful

    • +1

At least it's slowly getting better here, unlike the US where it seems to be getting worse. Comcast 250GB data limits, the poor yanks :P

      • +1

ha, we've got a long way to go what with telstra charging $60 for 10gb :(

lol a place i've seen students stay for hours is at Sunnybank (QLD) maccas…cheap asians!!! haha

  • +3

Argh! Can't believe a Macca's freebie is going to win the bargain comp this week…

    • +3

And it's old news :P No offense

      • You should have posted it earlier then :P

      • Yeah, pretty old indeed.

    • lol the Microsoft Windows 7 beta almost won it was only 30 votes away

  • This give Maccas all the reason to jack up their prices for their considerably cheap meals (compared to KFC and Oporto, etc). hmm have to hunt for a netbook now :P

  • it's about time mcdonalds do this. Nearly all the ones in the us hav free wifi so it's good that they have brought it to australia!

    • And I understand why they haven't done it earlier. I mean who else is giving away free WiFi on a scale even 1/10th this big? Or free WiFi at all in this country?

      • Good point; how available is free wi-fi in Australia? In Europe it's pretty much everywhere - esp UK where outlets do what they can to grab a customer these days. Coupled with the 99p pint of beer, free wi-fi and excellent coffee, I could spend days in Wetherspoons! Just a shame I'm not over there anymore.

Anyway, back to my query: is free wi-fi easily accessible nowadays and how can I find where it will be?

        Cheers, Dio

    Cheap-arse country.

    • +2

And what are you doing to make broadband more affordable in this country? Exactly!

Need I remind you Australia is one massive bloody big island, with a few very very very expensive cables connecting us to the rest of the world for data. We're not like 'everyone else'.

I hope you keep your WiFi open for the good of the nation.

When the Yanks landed in Australia in WWII they couldn't believe that the "God-damned government" owned the "telephone company"… They though that made us "a bunch Commies".
If the government HADN'T built and owned the telephone network (via the PostMaster-General), no-one other that a few Doctors in Melbourne and Sydney could have AFFORDED to have a telephone! Economies of scale were simply never going to apply in this vast, sparsely populated continent.

Just got back from 3 nights in Sydney. The kids took their ipod touch's with them and we went to maccas and used the free WiFi. It was very handy to know about before we left. :)

  • OMG!!!! NO WAY!!!!
    thanks bro, this is sikk
