{P} rannetts on 11/01/2009 - 01:39 (www.takethenortonchallenge.com)

Went to Office works today and found the following:

Norton Internet Security 2009 (2 user) + some other norton product included in the box for $90 and a $20 cash back offer
Norton 360 Version 2.0 (3 user) $99 and a $40 cash back offer

See site for more info:

I ended purchasing the Norton 360 Version 2.0 - 3 user which ends up working out to be $20 per computer in my case for 1 year. I have been through plenty of antivirus products over the years from AVG to Kaspersky etc. I currently use Norton Internet Security 2009 on my MSI-Wind and would recommend it to anyone with a laptop or netbook, it is a lot faster than previous versions and has a very small footprint. Been playing around with Norton 360 Version 2.0 today it is actually a good package, got to uninstall a few other separate programs as it has the same functionality combined. Norton Internet Security 2008 and 360 Version 1.0 were bloated and hogged a lot of resources, Norton have actually learned from their mistakes!!

Don’t mean to sound like a fan boy but thought my experiences might be useful.

It doesn’t like VMWare network bridge, so I will pass. Might use the corporate edition, tiny footprint no crappy internet filtering.

Countering that - I have the 3 month trial of it (NIS) on 2 Vista computers and I am impressed by how much better it runs than previous recent versions (smaller and faster). However I recently had a client (I sort out computers) that has Norton AntiVirus 2009 - did a scan with it, it found a few small things. Then scanned with some other programs (probably SuperAntiSpyware, Spyware Doctor & ASquared) which found some quite serious stuff (a rootkit and a trojan among others) so I’m not overly impressed with Norton.

I suppose any package will have the same story - someone will always find stuff it missed, but this was 2 serious things.

It still actually takes a long time to install and also when doing the first update, noticed no slow down though uses a lot less resources than AVG did. I think it is unfair to judge the product based on the previous products as they are quite different. I had been using Kaspersky Internet Security in the past but for Kaspersky internet security 2009 3 user it is $89.95. Reviews of both Norton and Kaspersky latest internet security software are really good, the main factor for me was the price and this deal hit the spot.

Well if he honestly feels it’s an awful product then yes, that would mean in his opinion it isn’t a bargain.

I think we read his negative as ‘an ineffective product isn’t a bargain at any price’.
