I order the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 9.7 yesterday. Got the email notification that it would be ready within a few hours for pickup. Great stuff officeworks.

    • I ordered yesterday as well got a SMS in 2 hours from Mt Gravatt QLD

They went from 10.5 widescreen models to 9.7 Ipad clones this gen…great price but I'm sticking with my older Tab 3.

    • They've always had this ratio, it was only the 2 flagships that were widescreen. Also don't forget that Nexus has the same ratio… as well as pretty much all other tablets, it isn't fair to call this an ipad clone!

Great price for a snappy performer, though resolution is very low for this size and you WILL see pixels, I've seen this tablet first hand. Then again the price is very good especially for a Samsung.

Edit, would not get this for readers.

the screen res is the let down ….. most tablets in this price range have moved onto to higher res to get market share.

        • Yeah.

WHen this came out, the screen and the price (too high) were the let downs. Now it's just the screen; it's pretty disappointing in my opinion.

@inose: It depends on who is using it… for an older person with bad eyes it's a good deal.

Also the lower res will mean less stress on the GPU + less memory usage as things inevitably get slower over time…

        • @closey: Well the first reason isn't a great one if you looking for reasons to buy this tablet but OK, the half blind will not notice the lower resolution.

The latter two are just clutching at straws though - who in their right mind would choose a tablet for the reason of "well the CPU is slow but at least it wont be suffering … um, tbh your making appeals to reducing "stress" on various components when no device ever has issues with "stressing" the cpu. So you appeared to have just made this up in order to convince us … let me guess: you already bought one.

        • @Diji1: Yes, I did get one but it was for a relative, at the time it was the best value but there was the display trade off.

I'm currently using a Nexus 9 myself and find it to be a bit too aggressive in "losing its sh#t" when it comes to killing old apps that are running. I assumed it was due to the higher resolution that it's pumping out and running out of RAM, but I could be wrong.

But, this is all only based off my experience, more variables might be at play.

      • less than 10.1" size and they can bundle MS office in for free

Tab S2 is your device for high screen res

        • Yeah i've got a Tab S1

      • That's not true. Samsung have always had 16:10 aspect ratio displays for their tablets. It's true that they're trying to emulate the iPad's success.

        • I may be wrong. I frequently am. I just want to make things right. Can you tell me what ratios their other tablets were? Like the Galaxy Tab Pro series, Tab 4 etc.

I may be wrong here too, but the Nexus line (and pretty much all other tablets) have similar ratios.

        • @inose: 16:10. Either 2560x1600 for the Tab Pro or 1280x800 (8", 10") or 1024x600 (7") for the Tab 4.

        • @happychappy1:

What about the ratio for Nexus 9?

        • @inose: The Nexus 9 is made by HTC. It's 4:3. Same resolution as the retina iPads (full size/Air or mini, but not the pro). If you mean the Nexus 10, which was made by Samsung, it was 16:10, 2560x1600.

        • @happychappy1:
No I'm talking about the Nexus 9. I guess by the same logic, HTC and Google copied the iPad to get market share.

Or maybe they're just following the most popular trend?

        • @inose: I think tablet makers are realising that people use tablets in portrait and landscape thus are trying to accommodate. Just look at the Google Pixel-C.

        • @happychappy1:

Well yeah, how else are people going to use their tablet if not landscape or portrait?

And yeah, looks like they've copied with their Pixel C…?

I personally like it wide screen. Better for videos :D

        • @inose: Depends on your usage scenario. Many people like a mix of reading and watching videos, so a squarish 4:3 aspect ratio is a nice compromise - not too tall and narrow in portrait and not too much black bar space when watching widescreen videos. There are still widescreen tablet options available if you look around, if they're older models you might be able to score a nice discount.

Thanks for the calculator deal OP! I use my phone normally, but now people at work think I'm on my phone browsing the net instead of actually doing calculations.

  • Providing you can find one at your local store, Officeworks have the tab s 8.4 for $349…..pretty good price for a tablet with some great specs

    • You can get the tab s2 in the 8" version for the same price with the eBay voucher.

      • Better display resolution, larger battery & 16:9 aspect ratio (no black bars when watching a movie) on the tab s vs tab 2 - http://www.androidauthority.com/galaxy-tab-s2-vs-galaxy-tab-…

Who knows what samsung were thinking when they bought out the tab 2 as a replacement for the tab s

        • +2

16:9 aspect ratio (no black bars when watching a movie)

Thats funny i thought most movies were shot in 35mm film with an anamorphic lens, then projected back at 2.39:1 or around 21:9.

      • Please show me where you can get this as per your comment

      • Sorry no i mean this "You can get the tab s2 in the 8" version for the same price with the eBay voucher" as per ultramic comment
