  • I'm in the market for a smart watch and I'm on the fence between this and the newer galaxy watch. Although at this price it probably makes a lot more sense to grab this, unless a great deal for the galaxy pops up.

    • +3

Ive had the Galaxy S3 Frontier and was looking to upgrade to the Galaxy Watch when that came out but after the announcement i didn't think it was much of an upgrade…for a first smartwatch and at this price. you cant go wrong.

      • +2

For me the Galaxy watch wasn't enough of a jump in features to justify the higher price when I was comparing them.
I bought the S3 and I'm completely happy with it

    • The battery alone is worth it you don't want to be charging everyday

      • Well as long as this one can easily do a day that is all I require as I have no desire to wear it while sleeping, so no problem charging each night.

        • with all features turned on (smart tracking, gps, sleep, steps etc) mine easily does 2 days. I didnt see much difference between the newer version too so wouldn't hesitate to advise to go for the s3

    • +1

Neg if wrong, but I vaguely remember the new galaxy watch not having a rotating bezel?

      • -1

No, you're thinking of the brand new Galaxy Gear Sport.

        • Whoops, it's the Galaxy Watch Active that doesn't have a rotating bezel

  • been meaning to get a replacement watch for my dad who owns a iphone SE. do u think worth getting this or the iphone watch?

    • Apple Watch.

    • An Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS only) is probably a decent, affordable choice – I'm a recent Android convert, but I have to admit that Apple really has the most solid smartwatch around.

      • +2

        Apart from battery that is.

      • Huawei hands down

  • +4

Want to try gear, but Google assist missing 😔

  • +2

    Good price.

Had the Gear Fit Pro 2 but found the lack of apps on Tizen frustrating.

Was looking at this, but think I want to give Gear Os a try. Might wait for a deal on something like the Ticwatch C2.🤔

    • i thought that at the start, but then after time, i didn't find myself using my watch for anything other than notifications and quick replies….just out of interest, what would you have wanted on or made available on the watch?

      • +1

Not being locked to Samsung's fitness apps and the better management of music/podcasts.

I essentially used my watch for a way to track basic stats while jogging + listening to podcasts without having to bring my phone.

Gear fit did everything at a basic level, just took way more effort than I would have liked.

The new version of Gear OS is meant to work more seamlessly with android and there is already an app available for managing podcasts on the watch. I'm also betting there will be more options available as time goes by (particularly if the rumoured google watch is launched).

        • +1

ah ok fair enough. I just stream everything from music to movies to podcasts so the built in music app worked fine to control that on the S3 Frontier. Would've loved the Galaxy Wear to be on AndroidOS but that seems more buggy out of the 3 options.

          • +1

@ExtraSalt: Yeah, if I took my phone with me while jogging it wouldn't be an issue.

    • in the same boat…
nikeplus has come out on wearos.
just needs a watch with stand alone gps.

now i'm looking at the fossil watches…

  • I've used this watch daily since it's first release, paid $599 at the time. For this price, it's a great watch. I replaced the band with a 'nicer' metal band.

  • +3

I dont get how they can say 'enjoy your music with 4gb storage' and then later in the tech blurb say 4gb storage but 1.5 gb available.

So while its true that it has 4gb, i do not think its ethical to infer that its useable like they do. I get its the total and apps and system reduce that.

Where 1.5gb is whats left upon 1st turn on then thats what they should advertise for User storage

    • This has been industry practice since t = 0. Think of 1000 vs 1024 bytes, and OS using a fair slab of our early 20 mb hdd. same goes now on any pc… why is it only unethical for a watch?

      • +1

256gb and 230gb usable ~10% misrepresentation. ok fair enough

        4gb and 1.5gb usable ~60% misrepresentation.

That's why. Not sure if I got my percents around the right way but I think you get the idea.

      • Well its not, but just more so. Same as my partners Misfit Vapor, it's just annoying, and falling back on *.

    • This is only the marketing strategy of basically every mobile device released

      • Yes very true, this is unfortunately the way things are done, its just the wording is misleading, which is not good practice, most of us are in the know, but a lot of people would expect the 4gb due to the wording.

  • +1

Bought. Will use this as my daily watch. Planning on a Garmin for sports. How does this fair for sports? Does it have Strava and other fitness apps? Anyone can share their personal experience?

    • from what I've read - 3rd party apps will lose ability to sync with Samsung health - so they are essentially forcing you to use s-health-or whatever Samsung is calling it these days….

you will still be able to downing 3rd party fitness trackers - but they will only track activities if they are running in the foreground…
so forget about sleep monitoring/step counter etc - (unless you migrate to s-health)….

  • +2

Over $600 in just a few days. Thanks, OzB.

I think I have a problem. Time to cool it for a while.

  • Will this work well on the mate 20pro? Thx!

    • Yes. I believe there are a few Samsung apps that need to be downloaded from play store to get full functionality.

These are natively supported by galaxy phones

  • Big W website shows online only… then "Not available for home delivery"

  • Thanks OP - had some JB vouchers so got them to price match. Looking forward to some significantly improved battery life compared to my Fossil Gen 3.

  • +2

Just price beat at my local Officeworks $254.60 :D

    Thanks OP!

Was after this since I missed out on the good deals late last year

    • +2

Grabbed one from Officeworks. According to them 3 left in pitt street sydney.

    • Yep me too, hit JB up with HN deal and then brought in the OW price beat.

  • They were cheapest in early 2019 with a price of $239.
Haven't seen that price for long

    • I was hanging for that price again,

After that deal everyone was $300+

Happy with my $254.60 from OW via price beat.

I can't imagine them staying on the shelves for too much longer as the new Galaxy watch has been out for a while.

      • Probably it will be back on Easter sale.

  • Waterproof? I’m a surfer.

    • +1

Not really. Only IP68. The new Galaxy Watch would suit you better.

    • FYI just because a device is waterproof, doesn't mean you can submerge it at the beach. Salt water can still damage waterproof devices, happened to a friends' phone (stopped charging).

      • Also, samsung will be dodgy on repairing them if the charging port is corroded.
They said its not covered under warranth.

  • Do they still make the Gear Classic? Can't seem to find them anywhere. The Frontier is a bit bulky looking for my taste.

  • Does this work with iPhone?

    • Minimally……but don't bother.

  • I opted to pick up from a nearby store that had no stock. Hopefully they honour it.

  • Where is the best place to buy new bands for this?

    • +1

      eBay

      • Yep, any standard 22mm will do

  • Thanks OP! Price matched and 5% off at Officeworks for $254.60.

  • OW price matched - the phone attendent said "gee, that is a good price!".

  • Could anyone please share their experience if using this watch with an iPhone as tempted to buy one? 😊

  • Hey OP thank you so much been waiting for this drop. JB HI FI price matched it for me if anyone has one closer.

  • For those who have this watch - what would you say this watch is good for?

  • Posted in the Amazon thread as well:

Samsung Health - Not very open:

    https://www.androidheadlines.com/2018/08/samsung-health-will…

  • I couldn’t resist and bought one, not sure how it would be as using it with iPhone but I love round watches :)
JBHIFI has price matched for $254 as I told them about OW PB ..enjoy

    • Wow, I was going to try and get JB to price match, but you got them to price match OW's price beat? Impressive

  • FYI officeworks has also matched this price so you can unfortunately no longer 5% price beat with them. I went into jb and asked them to do the $254 to match OW and they checked that OW was $268 so they would only do that price.. So I just took it for that as I had a gift card I'd been meaning to spend at JB from Xmas.

Best option now is Amazon so you can get cash rewards if you don't mind waiting for post.

  • Does this have LTE? Googling suggests that the frontier is the LTE model whereas gear classic is the non-LTE model.. can't seem to find LTE In the feature list though

    • My understanding was that there were variants of the Frontier that have LTE and Bluetooth and the other just having Bluetooth.

    • +1

no… aus never got the LTE version…
if you got an overseas model - there's no guarantees it'd work with aus bands…

telstra/optus/vodafone werent ready for eSim at the time of the s3 release… so samsung never bought them in…

  • Have amazfit bip but apart from what's in the watch, not a lot of functionalities. Friend of mine has frontier n he's content with it.
Is it worth upgrading from bip to this at this price point?

  • Bought it and sold on Gumtree after 4 weeks, back to Garmin 235. Wasn't worth the upgrade I found. Shorter battery life, didn't use many functions für to a lack of integration despite using a Samsung phone. I found it wasn't really there yet.
