    Aren't you meant to cook with a wok at really high temperatures which you can't do with a non stick wok?

      Yes, but you aren't going to get those temperatures on ordinary stoves in Australia very commonly.

      We just use a Tefal non-stick at home for its shape.

      The temperatures that damage Teflon and cause it to release toxic fumes are apparently 650+ degrees Fahrenheit. Highest heat on normal stoves are roughly 650-700. Unless you have a stove that creates heat this high, and use it at its maximum too, it should be fine.

      Sorry for the American figures, just used google. I assume ovens here and there are both quite similar.

    • Typically, yes. Bear in mind that most non-stick woks tend to be slightly westernized, in that they have broad/flat bases and the heat is far less concentrated.

      Extended high heat will shorten the lifespan of any PTFE coating like this, and carbon steel woks are only usually around 30 bucks.

    • Yeah, but you should be fine if you're careful. Just don't leave it on high heat for an extended period of time with nothing in it.

      The flat bottom on this means that it's not going to be good as a traditional wok but best you can get for induction style cooking.

      If you have an electric, coil or induction cook top then this will be great. You still won't get the actual wok effect but closest you'll get with that style cook top. If you have a gas cook top then you're better off with a cast iron, stainless steel or carbon steel wok.

      • A correction to my point above. I didn't realise that this is the rounded non-precision version. That means it's terrible to use on anything other than gas.

            @zennow: Induction and electric cooktops hewt via a heating element making direct contact with the material. With a round base only a small part is making contact with the cooker. So the middle part of the pan will heat up while the rest will remain cold.

            Tefal counter the by providing flat base on most of their pans. This gives a great surface area to make contact with therefore giving the pan more heat.

            Gas cookers on the other hand emit more heat to a larger area. That works better for round bottom woks as the heat can travel up the sides of the wok giving more heat to the total pan.

            I should also add that the better Tefal pans have a special type of base which holds and distributes heat more evenly to counter the problems with direct heat cooking on electric cook tops.

          Gas here. Perfect. We do a lot of Daal and authentic Indian curries from base spices which don't require a max blast furnace fire. Picked one up today. Woolies pulled it from availability on their website earlier today, but I sent the Mrs on a mission and she scored.

    There’s an old thread on ozbargain and the concensus was to buy a cheap carbon steel wok from Asian grocery store. Any idea how the Tefal wok compares?

      No non stick comes close to actual carbon steel wok for stir frys.

      Depends what you're cooking on. A lot of it is personal preference as well but here's what I found based on personal experience:

      Carbon Steel - Fast to heat up, doesn't retain heat too long. Works best with gas especially when it has a rounder bottom. Needs to be seasoned well and constantly taken care of. Never put it in the dishwasher. Rust can be an issue if not well taken care of and used often

      Stainless Steel - A little slower to heat up than Carbon Steel. Food tends to stick to it more than a well seasoned carbon steel wok. Can go in the dishwasher. Rust isn't an issue unless it's a terribly made wok

      Non-stick/Tefal - Slower to heat up than CS and SS. Can't handle as high heats for extended periods of time. Oil has a chance of damaging the cheaper ones (Tefal are alright with oil). Avoid using metal utensils

      Cast Iron - Slowest to heat up but retains heat much longer. Needs to be seasoned well but becomes pretty non-stick with a good seasoning. Never put it in the dishwasher. Similar to carbon steel but can retain heat for longer

      If you have a gas cooktop then I'd suggest Carbon Steel as long as you're willing to keep up the maintenance on it. Otherwise I'd suggest cast iron (a little bit easier to maintain) or stainless steel. If you have an induction cooktop then I'd suggest the more expensive Tefal's. If you have an electric cooktop then I'd suggest going with a flat bottom cast iron pan or Tefal.

    • Yep.

      Be careful though. Induction reaches a higher heat than standard cook tops. If you leave it on an induction for more than a few minutes without food in it then you have a good chance of destroying the pan.

          Bargaineasy is right. I looked at these the other day in Woolies and they are not suitable for induction cooktops.

          • @Boodek: Because it's an aluminium piece. Gotta be steel to use with induction.

            Be warned, aluminium cookwear may have a detrimental effect on health, Google is your friend.

        • Yep, my mistake. You're right. This is different to the normal anodised Tefal wok. Just had a look at the pictures and it's a rounded bottom which means it's better for gas but no good for induction.

    Wonder if it is made in China or made in France? I had bad experience with Chinese product.

      • The non-stick coating is very easy to be damaged after short period of time compare to the one made from France that I bought.

    Picked up ours today haven't used it yet but looks pretty good a woken steal for $20 no doubt. Again cheers BA wouldn't have found it otherwise.
