From my research I did last month - there was an update that fixed a lot of the lag but it's still there. Mostly the camera is glitchy and freezes a lot etc. Despite the DJI Action losing to it in most categories, it was still the preference in a lot of comparisons purely for the reliable software.
Personally, I'm waiting for the new gen DJI action
I had a Hero 7 and that was super unreliable, have seen many say the same for the most recent 2 (shouldn't rely on future firmware updates to fix products, don't release and ship until they're ready)… Loved the look of the DJI Osmo Action but FOV just wasn't wide enough for Bike Riding chest mounts like the Hero's.
Recently ordered the Insta360 Go II, little thing looks super fun, it's wider, more stable and cheaper than the Hero 9. No screen and many other trade offs, but for the portability and reframe abilities it's fitting my needs well. It's worth a look at if you're mainly chasing the GoPro for the compact size, and not necessarily rugged abilities, they've got tough competition on their hands

Sometimes you get some screen lag when changing setting but its not massive as you are saying, was fixed in one of the first updates.
If you keep a finger on the front screen the lag is not there on the rear screen when changing settings.Only other problem people get is when they use incorrect Micro SD cards that are too slow.
Gopro website has the Hero 9 with spare battery and 1 year subscription for $529 again.

Yup. And if you time you subscription cancellation (if intended) right, it is only $460.
Just a quick one, if you want to get batteries or battery+charger kit, you have to buy it together with a device/camera. It cannot be purchased independently.
Yes for some reason Gopro wont ship batteries if you dont order them with the camera.
interesting you mention that mate, i tried to get the bundle + the charger and extra batteries and it wouldnt let me. it was saying shipping regulations wont let me purchase extra batteries due to my location(perth). if you go into accessories you can buy the charger and battery seperate. its new in there.
so is it worth buying the gopro bundle seperately to buying any accessories? i figure get the subscription and then buy the accessories?
YT reviews say the 9 has massive screen lag issues, the reviews are a few months old. anyone able to update me?
