Been keeping an eye on this rice cooker. Not the cheapest it has ever been (zfishies found this for $110.25 in May 2020), but it has hovered around $150-170 in the past few months.

Comes with a Steam Basket, Rice Scoop, Porridge Scoop, Measuring Cup and Scoop Holder.

There's also a 10-cup version for $139, but it has been that price for a while I believe.

    This rice cooker is fantastic, it’s a massive step up from the cheaper rice cookers including the Panasonic DF101. The key features are

    • The lid seals better so the keep warm function actually works, you can cook rice for lunch and it’ll be fine to eat at dinner time. Cheaper ones dry out and burn the rice after a few hours
    • It has a timer
    • It beeps when done

    Basically it fixes all of the minor annoyances with low end rice cookers without demanding the $300+ for a Tiger. I have this one and would highly recommend

        Have you ever owned a microwave? It only beeps for like 5 seconds not like a cement truck backing up for the next 10 mins.

      Its an excellent rice cooker, better than the $300 Tiger.

        Damn, sounds like your Tiger wasn't functioning correctly. I have the t18a and have never encountered any of that (nor anyone else that I know that owns a tiger)

    • We upgraded from a similar Panasonic as it has water level indicators in white writing - couldn't see the old ones for shit, and had to get a torch each time before filling up.

      This model also comes with a paddle holder. Small thing but really useful.

    I have the Breville fast slow pro pressure cooker. I do my rice in that and its okay (not great). The benefit of using the pressure cooker is that I can cook beans or meats with the rice at the same time.

    Can the same be done with the rice cooker ?

    • I've never tried cooking anything else in a rice cooker so I can't say for sure - but looking online some people suggest that generally you can, for example: https://cookwaredaily.com/can-you-cook-meat-in-a-rice-cooker…

      Not sure if that applies to this specific Panasonic model, but I note that there's a "Slow Cook" option - maybe that's it? Happy for anyone with experience to chime in.

      This model has a hanging steaming basket over the rice so you could most likely steam fish and veg at the same as long as there's still enough room for the rice.

      We’ve always steamed something (mainly meats) on the top tray when cooking rice. My favourite is the Chinese dried sausages :)

        Pro tip when cooking Chinese dried sausages is to put the sausage directly onto the rice itself when the rice is half cooked. That way, the flavour if the sausage seeps directly onto the rice.

        • We often put minced meat mixed with pickled veggies or mushroom as well. And basically any dim sum :)

    • Funny that not a single image shows rice being cooked, but the last image is that of some kind of soup/stew.

      Buttons on the machine also mention cake/bread, seems to be a versatile machine.

    • I have the same cooker and always contemplating upgrading to a dedicated rice cooker but we cook rice once or twice a month in our household so can’t justify it.

      What’s your procedure to cook rice in the fast slow cooker? Mine is 2 cups of rice, 2 cups of water and 3mins on high pressure and naturally vented. It’s ok.. not the fluffiest

          • @ltwo: That is long since debunked - when I was at uni 20 years ago they already knew it was junk science. Aluminium doesn’t cause Parkinson’s/Alzheimer’s/dementia.

          Salami commented below that the Xiaomi IH rice cooker goes for a similar price and has a cast iron pot, maybe that one is more suitable for you?

    Good rice cooker, had it for 10 years and only replaced when a spring in the latch came off.

    • For your situation I would say so. No point buying one if you don't eat much rice, and not reguarly.

    • Yeah same, I moved from a cheap Kambrook rice cooker that to soak to clean to the red decor ones. I prefer the deco, and I'm not.ally making about 3 cups.

      The distribution is 5 cups uncooked rice, which is approximately 10 cups cooked, depending in type.

      Cup of uncooked dry rice. The cup is provided and shown in one of the pictures.
      1 cup is approx 1 serve of rice for a person. I personally find it quite large.

      I've seen both 5 and 10 cup cookers around — in my experience a 5 cup cooker can serve up to 8 people so as long as you're not going beyond that it should be fine.

      The 'cup' measurement is in the rice industry's 'cup' of 180 mL of uncooked/raw rice.

      Standard measure is 280ml - and that's based on the old feudal system in Japan, the measure used by lords to tax the peasants.

  • How well does it deal with only doing one cup? My existing rice cooker will burn the bottom irrespective of the water/rice ratio if you only put one cup in.

      I have this cooker and regularly cook 1.5 cups for two people - that comes out fine. Haven't tried 1 or less though.

      We always cook 200 grams of rice which is more or less 1 cup and we never experienced burnt bottom. It is always fluffy and great.

      • its 3L, so 5 cups uncooked rice which is roughly 10 cups cooked rice

        well, i cant speak for the panasonic as ive never owned one. but for the xiaomi, first impression was that its slightly bigger and heavier than expected. but all the material used feels quite premium and generally well built. the inner pot is i think made of cast iron coated with non stick so its quite hefty. i also like the fact that its wifi operable so you cook via the app. it's my first more "premium" rice cooker, having used a simple glass lid breville all this while and i am really liking it so far :)

      • Xiaomi is smart device if you are looking to control settings via phone

    • Are you able to scan the rice barcode as advertised or even set the rice type, or not really? I think I saw someone posting that when app is not in the Mainland region, a lot of the features disappear and you only have the sliding scale for how 'cooked' you want the rice. I'm interested in it but was kinda bummed out when I read that.

        hmm yeah i think it's probly much more limited from what i heard but for rice you're still able to set the hardness and texture based on the scale and also adjust the type of rice. im guessing the main difference may be that there are a lot more recipes in the mainland version.

        You shouldn't waste your money on this, and get a Tiger rice cooker made in Japan. i think they are around $1000, which is in your price range.

        Apologies, I meant to say the rice taste great even after hours of staying warm. Normally you'd see rice getting dry and hardened. Not in this one. Everything is nicely sealed.

      I'm genuinely curious if they will all give a similar result, I'm currently using a pressure cooker.

    I bought this 2 weeks ago for $129 (still that price) - new zealand stock, came in 4 business days. They have to follow ACCC for warranty and apparently they're very trustworthy in NZ too.
