The SA city gym does seem pretty okay. I've been there a few times. The machines and general facilities were fine, but the few times I was there it was chock full of the absolute worst people to share the space with. Frequented my main gym hundreds and hundreds of times and never have I once seen a DYEL eshay flex in the bathroom/main floor mirrors with his shirt off, but the two times I went to derrimut's, I saw it both times.

Has it's pros and cons like any gym. They've always been okay with top-ups hopefully this is no different despite the T&C's.

    • Biggest con is all the attention seeking laydies. Dressed for the beach and busy doing perfect form arm curls with 1 kg dumbbells in the squat rack for 30 minutes. While scouting around to see if anybody is looking at them.

Also avoid after working hours. Otherwise, it's okay.

      • Excuse me, attention seeking ladies dressed in beach gear is not a con.

        • Depends on whether they have a camera or not

      • Tell me u hate ur married life without telling me u hate ur married life.

      • This is a really weird thing to say.

Sounds like they could do with some better systems if their admin costs $88

    • +1

      yeah that blew my mind

like $88 to register a new user

this is some pre 9/11 nay pre Y2K nonsense

    • +4

It's just a made up number so they can charge you more.

Similar to anytime fitness. $0 sign up fee and free for 4 weeks! Oh but you need to pay $70 to activate a fob. No way it costs that much, they're just passing the cost to somewhere else.

Unless there's any way not to pay the $88 fee, pricing in the title should be 12mth membership for $287. Gym psychological pricing rubbish is like protein powder for your wallet, promising gains, delivering drain.

You’re right mate! Thanks to the ACCC consumers are taking the piss in regards with pricing of services and goods.

  • +1

In Victoria they're only in poor areas. Why?

    • +4

      Because it’s a pov gym.

    • Gyms in the east are already over saturated with Fitness First. I was with FF and disappointed I couldn't find any in the west either so I'm with Derrimut now 😅

Seems like Snap fitness has the best "balance" between east / west. followed by Anytime Fitness.

    • Median Household Weekly Income
      Derrimut: $2,271
      Caroline Springs: $2,133
      Airport West: $1,761
      Victoria average: $1,759
      Australia average:$1,746

At least 3 are above average income (source: 2021 census)

There’s literally a sale every month, including February’s “only sale of the year”. (profanity) Derrimut.

  • +14

Wtf is an admin fee and why isn’t included in the total? It’s like going to the grocer to buy a kilo of bananas for $3 plus $.15 shop keeper fee, $.02 power usage fee, $.03 baskets management fee, $.02 saying hello fee plus $.11 CEO’s super management fee.

Is this happening because of ACCC?

Nothing new here, haven't you used ticketmaster or ticketek before ?

    • It usually covers the key fob for entry.

    • -1

Because psychology I'm guessing. Humans aren't too smart and things like breaking prices up with labels justifying additional costs probably makes the cost more palatable, at least to some.

They can structure the cost how they want. They are making an offer. We consumers should just compare their offer to the competition and choose accordingly. Same as any other purchase in life.

Derrimut gym in Derrimut is my go to these days. It's old but less crowded compared to the one in Carroline Spring or Braybrook. But again it's not perfect and I'm looking for something this cheap but with good quality facilities. Any recommendation would be much appreciated.

Don't believe this … They keep posting lower price even after it's for limited time

  • Apparently they opening one in Enfield (South Australia), does anyone know the location?
I've asked them a few months ago (via email) and the response was very sus….
"Addresses will be confirmed closer to the opening date, kindly stay tuned to our social media pages for further updates!"
Do they not actually have a site yet?

This gym does seem to attract the real meat heads from what I've observed.

    • +4

Because it's cheap… What do you expect?

If you want better clientele… Then you should pay for a more expensive one which would filter out the undesirables

    • +4

That's what you want in a gym. They are usually nice bro's.

  • couple of years ago the Admin fee was $50 , don't know what's with this weird $88 amount

  • -1

Yes but this is the cheapest one out there if you pay per year upfront, ~1/2 price the other gyms around as far as I know. I know it's not apple to apple in terms of experiences the gym still covers all the basics. However, the Derrimut in QLD is not 24/7 so the name is lying xD

  • +1

negging the cr*p out of this deal for the $88 admin fee!!!

Gyms should not have lock in contracts and they should not have entry and exit fees!!!

    • Lol can you able to find a gym membership that cheaper than $287/year. Its easy to negative a deal but can you find one?

  • +1

lol $88 admin fee. What exactly are they doing? Typing a few lines into their software? What a joke.

  • +3

    I think I'll wait for the $0 membership + $287 admin fee.

  • I thought they had their last sale of the year? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/826608

    On the phone.

  • +1

$88 establishment fee a bit crappy crappy tbh. Curious to know how they settled on the exact number.

I hope they weren't deliberately dog-whistling the neo-Nazi association with the number, or making a concerted play at Chinese audiences, who both have positive associations to the number.

Regardless, it's a fair jump from the prior $50 and feels a bit skeevy, even if it's a one off charge.

  • +1

How did they come up with $88 for admin fee¿

  • How long will the sale last for ?
Is it possible to do a trial ?
How is Derrimut gym around 5pm ?

Thank you very much for helping. I am so attracted by the price as I can not afford more expensive one but I would like to avoid to feel like in a jungle hahaha.

    • +1

It is a jungle at peak time

    • +1

It's a nightmare at 5pm - based off my experience.
