Handy little Lodge skillet.
It's small at 16cms but I find very handy for sauteing some mushrooms or other side dish, eggs for two, or even cornbread
Love my Lodge cookware.

    6.5 Inch
    It's small at 16cms

    Thats average size

    • +2

16cm is total width not including handle, it's not the cooking area. Cooking area is 11cm. It's tiny.

      • +5

No need to undercompensate, that's plenty if you know how to use it

    • +2

      Actually more than average

      • Sure buddy, you tell yourself that

    • Small but perfectly equipped for the job

  • +2

I mean 6.5 inch is pretty tiny, I think 8 inches would be the minimum

    • +4

People have such high expectation these days. Sigh…

    • +2

      Inappropriate? Spare me…

The exchange was the most entertaining thing on here all week!

  • +2

FYI, the cooking area is 5 inches.

6.5 is top of rim diameter. Bought one and thought it's a tad too small but OK if cooking for 1.

  • We have the 8 inch version and it's much more versatile than the 6.5 inch one, that we used too have.

    • +1

What did you do to increase the size? Asking for a friend.

      • -1

        Upgraded to a new "we".

    • So I'm not missing out on anything then.

  • +5

I have something like the 10.25 inches option

The 10.25 inches @ $41 is by far more versatile, far better to handle/ cook with (more room/ fits in bigger portions) - and better value for cost.

Yea i use my 10 the most. I dont even know where my smaller pan is. If i find it ill pass it on. My 12 is good but can be heavy

  • +4

I use mine to make single serving brownies, and large chocolate chip cookies

    Also I payed $18

    • +2

That's an interesting way to do it, any particular recipe you follow?

      • +6

"microwave mug cake" recipes fit well in the 6.5 inch pan, 14 minutes in the oven at 175, better results than the microwave. I usually use this one and it's variants (note that it isn't an Australian site, so the tablespoons it uses are equal to 3 teaspoons, or 15ml, while aussie tablespoons are 4 teaspoons.)(luckily I have some foreign tablespoons on hand)

I haven't settled on a preferred choc chip cookie recipe yet, but there are tons when you google "6.5 skillet cookie" or "mini skillet cookie"

        • That's awesome, thank you

    • I use mine to make single serving brownies, and large chocolate chip cookies

Very creative considering the nature of the comments above lol

      • As a mixing wand ;)

Lodge L8SK3 10.25 Inch Cast Iron Skillet with Helper Handle, Black
    $24.45

Mrs must have disposed of the 6.5" one, bcos I haven't seen it in a long while, and yes it was tiny.

Spoil your self and get an aus-ion and never look back

    You only live once :P

Take care of it and it will become a family heirloom

    • +1

      Seconded…

    • +3

lol $230 for a 30cm cast iron pan? Tell em he's dreaming.

Like anything that's "made in straya" is probably sold for 1/10 of the price overseas

I have 3 Solidteknics pans, two are cast iron from back when they made them. They are great, and mine are stamped with their manufacture date. They use Australian iron too.

But their pricing is kinda astronomical really. Their new saute pans using 2-3mm steel is something like twice the price of De Buyer equivalents which are made in France. At least when i bought my 2 De Buyer pans they were. So i haven’t been recommending Solidteknics much lately.

But getting back to the topic, my cast iron Solidteknics pan which is probably about 20-25cm is basically used daily for everything (except sometimes tomato based things as it eats at the seasoning). It’s great, not much sticks to it and I’d recommend cast iron to anybody. It lasts forever and like the parent commenter said, these could become family heirlooms. I’ve seen YouTube videos where people left cast iron pans out in a paddock for a few years and got them all rusty, so they sanded them down, cleaned them up and they were as good as new. We used to be on gas but now induction and it’s no different.

I don’t think this small Lodge would get much use in my house.

Edit: I got all my Solidteknics stuff from their Kickstarter campaigns, better value for money then.

Where's a good source for buying De Buyer carbon steel pans at the moment in Australia? I can only find Matfer, and with their recent arsenic scandal (which to be fair, might be overblown — will wait for the America's Test Kitchen conclusion), I've decided to hold off buying a pan for time being.

Glad to hear you're enjoying the SolidTeknics! I do like the idea of using wrought iron. They are very expensive to point it's hard to justify without any discount/Kickstarter. I do find their handles too long for small 45cm ovens.

    • 'Tis OzBargain, not OzHeirloom. Post some good deals for Aus-iron, then it'll make it worth getting excited about :)

      • The debuyers like generalskunk mentioned are still really good quality for much cheaper price tag

        • Fair! I thought I'd see if I could tease a deal out though, because I'd certainly love to buy an Aus-iron but I just can't afford it TBH (or at least not at full price). Glad to hear the pans are as good as they say.

          • @tommypickles: Aha yeah solidteknics do have sales occasionally, cant tell you exactly when but they run a ' pre order pan get a smaller pan free a couple times a year

I also got one decently priced from ebay with a code around 10 months ago

Still the most expensive pans ive ever baught but i use them daily, and expect to use them until im too decrepid to hold their weight, so i have never regretted the purchase :P

Missus used to be satisfied with with the 6.5inch one but once we had kids now nothing but 10 inches will do.

    • +2

Just recondition the 6.5" for a new owner.

    • Most underrated comment ;)

  • Ordered one and excited

  • OzB never fails to disappoint, when predictably anything mentioning 6 inches can still attract upvotes for spotty-schoolboy "humour".

    • I wonder why it does not happen in the mobile section :D

  • A cast iron skillet for ants?!

  • Well, not getting mine! As of 29th May:

Package was damaged and will be returned

    Ugh

Well, someone in the US will get it cheaper through Marketplace lol
