You came early. Is that often a problem for you?

why didn't you just make one yourself instead of remarking that there hasn't been one already

I have all these torches but never any blackouts. Can't I just have some unreliable power for once?

    • +1

Don't need a blackout… just venture out and turn your street into daylight. Confuse your neighbours, birds and everyone else.

      • I started collecting torches mid 2018. Since then we've had one 45 minute blackout. Good for the fridge/freezer but bad for my torch collection utilization stats.

In the meantime, our local council seem to have replaced all the residential pole lights with what looks like 3x3 or 4x4 LED grids (hard to stare at an eclipse) that are much brighter (and whiter) than the previous lot, removing 25% at least of my lumen bests effectiveness!

We have a Rainbow lorikeet colony near by. Noisy AF just after twilight but when an SP70 turns night into day, they shut up for a smidge.

  • Shame there's no colour choice.

Any idea what the difference between old and new version are? They look the same to me. I bought one of these and they're quite good, but not sure if old or new version.

    • +1

Quick way to know if you have the updated version is if you can also use it as a powerbank via usb c. This is according to the updated video review by LiquidRetro.

      • just sold out, do you know any more stock coming ? want one. Thanks

        • I'm not affiliated with the brand so I'm not sure. The compact version is still on sale Sofirn LT1S for $55.99 with the 30% off promo code.

          • @jerdp: The compact version isn't designed in coop with BLF and doesn't use anduril as the UI + worse battery. Has some good features though and the wide base gives better stability.

    • +1

Last time I bought an LT1S from them I asked if I could get a coloured barrel and Vivi gladly agreed to ask home base to send one ex China. If you don't ask….

$67 is/was a great price with batteries. Even the current $79.99 is relatively good. I'd definitely be asking for a different colour at ths latter price.

  • The thumbnail looks like someone shaking a robot hand. Disappointed.

  • Back in stock but its $79.99 now

    • +1

Noting that the updated listing is no longer direct from Amazon. It will be direct from the supplier so may take a little bit longer to get delivered. $79.99 is still good value imo for a long endurance light w/ powerbank feature.

  • hard doubt this ever sold for $120.

I'm only commenting because sold out but how is this so appealing? clicked through expecting disappointing specs and wasn't disappointed.

looks small. it's heavy 405grams without batteries. only 600 lm brightness. only decent thing about it is the 24 hours battery life but that's probably over what you actually get. I thought it would at least have a torch mode.

seen sofirn torches posted before which looked ok and good value but $67 for this? doesn't look that much different from any other LED lantern.

ok looks like this is the lantern version of this which is almost the same price https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/840854 but that one is way brighter.

ok I think 5 hours to charge at 5v/2a is 10Ah at 5v capacity. so a decent 13513mAh at 3.7v battery (probably bit less due to heat energy lost) so a decent powerbank, with lantern feature. I think I get it but 13500mAh powerbank +lantern still seems expensive for $67. what is charge output? I assume 5v 2a.

I take it you're not a 'flashlight' enthusiast.

This was designed with input from the Budget Light Forum (hence BLF in the name) and was long considered the best camping lantern you could get.

Good build quality, high efficiency, high CRI emitters (though Nichia 519a would be better now), Anduril 2 (which is an open source user interface for flashlights).

You'd still struggle to find much better. $67 seems like phenomenal value to me, especially given it also comes with 4 x good quality 18650 batteries.

no I’m not you are correct. I did notice a lot of comments on previous torch posts though that had the “gotta get em all” buy every model attitude so I guess that kinda explains some of the fact it’s sold out.

clearly I did not know this. it should have been in the description ! would have explained everything. but maybe OP wasn’t a enthusiast either 💁‍♀️

so assuming high efficiency means 24 hours use is definitely possible at 600 lm?

I know about 18650’s. it comes with 4 expensive good ones? well I don’t think anyone’s buying just for those since then you have to find 4 more to use in the lantern (if you don’t you are paying extra for the lantern for nothing).
but thanks for clarifying. I was actually thinking it might not come with any batteries included because it quoted weight “without batteries”.

Deals are introductions to a product/serbvice which someone thinks are good value. The expectation is that interested people will do their own research before deciding if the product/price is value to them and whether the specs offered are wanted or needed. For example, not everyone needs or wants complex anduril functionailty, or the ability to select light colour temperature - both of which this lantern has,

Sometimes torch deals will have links to reviews to help buyers, but searching is easy enough. Better quality torches and lanterns will almost invariably have a detailed review by at least one expert/enthusiast. Videos are also good to show real life experience.

There are plenty of BLF LT1 summary tests (youtube) and detailed reviews (containing runtime and lumen graphs, and available light settings etc) around so grab a beverage, take your pick, sit back and enjoy learning (as I did). You'll get a far better idea of this product's capabilities than to-ing and fro-ing comments on Ozbargain.

GL. Portable light is actually very interesting when you dip your toe.

@Igaf: not expecting paragraphs but something short would have been enough
            such as
            - high efficiency
            - designed with help from budget light community
            - point 3
            - point 4
            etc.

I try to include a few lines of helpful basic info and any feedback I have read when I post.

OP did write something but it just didn’t explain the value to me and most likely people won’t sit through a 10 minute video unless they are not doing anything else.

the fact the amazon page has missing pieces of info didn’t help either making the product seem like less value.
such as brightness levels and how many hours at each. didn’t even think it was dimmable.
if they include high quality 18650 cells they should really put that in the description such as “4x Panasonic NCR18650G included”.

            • +1

@harshbdmmaster718: Amazon torch descriptions are often wildly exaggerated. Irrespective, they're usually a combination of marketing and basic product description, not something buyers should generally rely on for decision making. Your choice, but personally if I had limited time I'd spend it reading reviews, watching at least one video, and learning for future reference.

              • @Igaf: fair enough.
yeah I am aware of stupid amazon descriptions. pretty sure I have seen a few random torch posts copy paste brightness such as 10000 lm or 15000 lm when someone in the reviews already states the LED they used is not even capable of that.

    • Just out of interest, what would you recommend for a lantern then?

      • well after reading soymeats comment above my opinion in the value is a little different. they explained why the lantern is so popular.

but what would I recommend? I’m not a camper or anything but I seen plenty which are $20 to $30 and more or less achieve the same thing.

from my perspective all I saw was a low lumen lantern with the function of a cheap powerbank (slow charge output of 5v/2a would be lower than the $29 13000mAh Anker I have that does 5v/2.4a). when reading the page if something was more impressive it would have made sense to me. maybe like a 1000 lumen mode, dimmable, doubles as a torch by extending or something, USB-C output of 9v 2a etc (actual fast charge spec).

  • These are great lanterns and this is good price. I bought mine in 2021 for $84 after a post here, so sub $70 in 2024 is really good.

Bright when you need them, dim to low level when you don't. Easy to charge, long run-time. Great Sofirn quality. I do baby the lantern glass as it is quite exposed.

I've got the older version that doesn't act as a power-bank. But wouldn't use it for one normally anyway. Perhaps handy in an emergency and your phone runs out of battery.

    • +1

It surprised me when I tested the power bank feature that it supports fast charge on my Samsung s20 FE.

      • +1

it supports fast charge on my Samsung s20 FE.

oh it does? so it’s like a modern powerbank then they should have put that feature on the page! that’s a huge selling point.

either Samsung Fast charge capable (5A PPS) or PD 9v/12v whatever it supports.

also comment above says it’s dimmable, which I couldn’t find when reading.

also more detailed battery life/capacity specs would be nice. such as 24 hours @ 600 lm, 30 hours @ 400 lm etc.
battery type used, mAh capacity etc.

          • @kmp: had some time to watch the video.
            thanks.

so even though the amazon one is black and looks like LT1(v1) it’s actually the updated LT1A2 model because only that one has power bank feature.

also USB output seems to be what I thought and same as the input. slow charges a phone at 5v/2a (10 watts).
seems to do 6.3v/3a so 18watts with that fan connected but looks like they didn’t bother with PD specification. 9v/2a would have been possible at least for something that’s not a phone.

also the older LT1 seems to have a longer runtime if you don’t need power bank feature. roughly 2 hours more at max brightness and many hours more at minimum.
