Can I Exit China by High-Speed Rail Using 144hr Transit without Visa from Guangzhou to Hong Kong

I am planning on flying to Guangzhou and then taking high speed rail out of China to Hong Kong while using 144hr transit without Visa. Has anyone done this recently successfully? I looked online and there seems to be conflicting info about whether transit without Visa train ports are closed or open.

This webpage says train is available

This webpage says train is not yet reopened

I asked China Southern Airline and they don't know and there's no contact info online for Chinese entry/exit authorities. Anyone know who to contact to answer this question?

The simple solution will be to fly from Guangzhou to Hong Kong but since they are only 100km apart it seems a bit ridiculous.

  • Are you asking if you can enter HK from China on the transit visa? Or if the train is running?

    • Whether I can use transit visa, the train is definitely running.

      • The first link you put tells you that you can’t leave from HK using the transit visa

You also need a visa to enter HK or Macau that differs from the mainland china visa.

    • I'm also interested. If I'm spending a month in China, can I visit HK for a day or 2 and come back to China without a reentry permit? (am I actually leaving "China"?)
It's separate from China…but at the same time it isn't.
1 country (same same), 2 systems of government (but different) …but with Chinese oversight (…but still same!)
I could see this being an arbitrary ruling as to how Visa permits are applied.

You need to apply for a double entry or multiple entry visa to China if you plan to visit HK or Macao.

        • Thankyou. I'll do that!

Attention: Foreign travelers making use of the 144 hour visa-free transit need to bear a valid travel document and a confirmed flight ticket to a third country or region (onward journey within 144 hours). The respective carrier is responsible for the application for the visa-free transit. The respective carrier has to acquire the preliminary entry permit.

Just do it, you are only risking life in a Chinese prison!

    • Not in my experience. Only a 2 hour detainment to get things sorted.

    Is this a maths question?

the train has definitely reopened back in late 2022; However you will be leaving China and re-entering it again - so you will need another visa.

    And in Chinese:

    I'd hope they are current!
You need to have an onward ticket before arrival, from from one of the 4 permittted stations.

  • Have been browsing the web for other people's experiences and haven't found anyone who's been successful with it.

And then there's this recent post from reddit whereby someone suggests that there is a technicality issue even if it is from one of the 4 exit ports, which is why it's not possible?

Keen to see how you fare OP. Thinking of trying the same towards the end of year.
