Best Way to Farm Points for Cathay Pacific

Hi,

I'm currently planning a trip to Hong Kong/China and I am looking at flying Cathay Pacific.

I want to open up a credit card for the benefits such as complimentary travel insurance and farm points.

Having never churned or opened a credit card before, would someone be able to point me in the right direction and whether Velocity or QFF can be converted to Asia Miles and if it can be done, how do I go about it and whats the best bargain or efficient way of using my points?

I've been reading if you're going to use points then you should use it on Premium Economy or Business because you still need to pay tax etc and economy isnt worth it. Is there much merit to this?

The card I'm looking at at the moment is the American Express Velocity Platinum Card.

Any advice and guidance before I take my credit card virginity would be greatly appreciated

    Velocity is Virgin Australia, it does NOT convert Asia Miles. Velocity points can be converted Kris Flyer (Singapore Airlines) points.

    I was looking at using QFF points to get to Taiwan and Qantas’ best option on their Classic Flight Rewards website was a Cathy flight via Hong Kong. So maybe just using QFF points will do rather than having to convert to Asia Miles.

    They can not.

    You would want to look at earning Amex points which can be converted to Asia Miles, or use Qantas points to try and book Cathay flights.

    Make an account on Cathay Pacific and search for award seats to see how much they'll cost or if they're available.

    Cathay (CX) and Qantas are in the same alliance so you can use QFF points to book CX flights. Qantas will charge you $270 each way + points on a CX redemption SYD<>HKG.

    Cathay doesn't charge fuel surcharges on their own award redemptions (e.g. using Asia miles to book CX reward seats) so it would be cheaper but I'm not sure by how much.

      CX and JAL has the highest surcharges in Asis Pac. :(. As for CX, they do have better availablity than Qantas QFF for their flight. QFF will not even show CX flight most of the time, while CX will have availablity for Econ, P.Econ and Business (especially to Hong Kong.). If you are eligible for AMEX Platinum Card and willing to pay for the $1500 annual fee, definitely get that and you can kick start CX points journey. With AMEX platinum, you get travel credit, lounge access before you fly, Accor Plus, $200 (local) / $200 (overseas) Dining Credit….
