LEGO - Best Times to Buy - Building Not Invest

Looking at getting more into Legos with kids and building out sets.

I've seen lots of good deals in the past on here and as per usual I'm a few months behind some really good price drops on sets. Kids are keen on the big expensive Harry Potter sets and seen on historicals like 25% off (i.e $699 rrp down like $500's).

Are there drops at certain times of year for sets? All I see is the end of life before investors swoop in etc.

The wish list so far is the Viking Village and the bigger Harry Potter sets.

      Hope so - Just finished building Gringots bank that was a very nice gift from family with the kids and wanna keep the momentum going :) but ozbargain is life, can't do RRP prices..

    Do lego tag on OzBargain to get notifications and website like brickhawk and bricking around notify you of sales. And subscribe to the AG lego store newsletter. But usually school holidays / Easter / Black Friday / Christmas.

    Max discount of retailers is between 40% and 50%. Max price DJ, MYER and the like will discount is about that amount if you take into account staff discount as well.

    So maybe aim for that value?

      Yeah Myer has an impossibly good price on the harry potter castle but it's out of stock.. doubt it'll come in stock at that price.. but got some gift cards and myer credit etc. so would be amazing if it happened

    Some of the big HP you wont see any discounts on, ever (Diagon Alley for example)

    Biggest discounts come on the non Hogwarts/town sets like Hedwig, Chess, Fawkes, Harry Lego statue etc.

    All the others are waiting for 20 - 25% discounts. If you're lucky, maybe a 30%.

      Diagon Alley is kinda the one the kids are jumping up and down over since we did gingots and it's linked (watched the HP movies never did the books so I have no clue.)

      But yeah naturally the kids want the crazy f-off expensive kits but they're kinda worth it cause that's like a whole week of building time and they are pretty quiet doing it

    Half a dozen replies in and not a mention of Brickhawk?

    Put some kits you like on your Brickhawk watchlist and it will send you an email when that kit goes on sale. Picked up heaps of kits this way.

    If you are just building them and they are not for Lego Ponzi schemes, then also look at used kits on places like Fartbook or Scamtree. People will often build the kits and then knock them back down to sell.

      Just signed up and put 3 sets on, i feel the paid for stuff might be more for the investor angle but will check in on this.. saw the myer price on the castle and was wow, but out of stock :(

    Kmart and BIG W sell most of the LEGO sets cheaper than RRP, then if you're not in a rush wait for BIG W 20% off sales and use Everyday Extra code to get another 10% off. I've been able to get LEGO sets this way at 30-45% off RRP.

    Amazon discounted sets can also be checked here via Brickset, they refresh quite regularly.

    2nd hand no boxes on fb marketplace with books
    We got 100 sets big and small, incl trains for $500 all up

      Lego's biggest missed opportunity is doing big ass boxes of random pieces really.
      They could wrap them up in different kits and color waves or something but yeah I miss my milk crate filled with jumbled pieces and blocks

        Putting on my corporate hat, boxes of random pieces are a buy once proposition. You buy it once and build with it forever. All the special kits are buy, build, display which keads to more sales. It sucks, but the original lego mindset has been pushed aside by capitalism.

        Or Universal sets as Lego called it. This is an anti-"subscription"/repeat model.

        However, the second hand market facilitates this universal set concept for the interested builders.

    Use Brickhawk - set alerts and you can also peruse the data to see what realistically is the cheapest that set typically goes.

    For more consistent lower price - get an Everyday Extra account, then when Big W do 20% off Lego (happens semi-regularly), you can combine that with your 10% off monthly code.

      You don't actually need to have Everyday Extra account to use the code. But why not since it's only $35 for Everyday Extra for the whole year now.

          Usually XMMM2024, replace MMM with current month, e.g. April = APR, May = MAY, June = JUN
