Dumb Question: Paying Council Rate / Telco Bill Using Discount Gift Cards or Reward Credit Card?

I have a few gift cards (purchased using a 0.5% reward credit card) from previous Coles deal with 4.76% discount and my credit card reward is about 0.5%.
My council rate and telco bills are of the similar amount every month. However council charges 0.51% for using card (gift card and credit card), while Telco does not charge card fee.
How do I maximum the discount / rewards?

Since they are endless bills I reckon there is no difference in the long run?

  • Buy discounted GC with CC and wear the 0.51% ?

  • There used to be ways and means with Beem and Sniip https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/629034 but the fees went up.

As an Ozbargainer, you should know that the ONLY correct answer is always to use the option that cost the least amount of money to you.

Of course you buy discounted gift cards with your credit card (to earn points etc.) to pay council and utilities. D'uh. :-)

  • Do cost benefit analysis; also with opportunity cost if prepaying - e.g. before health insurance premiums increase for another year.

  • As someone who is getting closer to buying a house, seeing you post is very useful! Thank you!

That sounds painful to have that ongoing bill, but that's life with rates.

Now you've made me REALLY REALLY want to get more gift card deals next time I see them.

Can I ask exactly which gift card still worked to use for paying rates?

  • So can I clarify your council is accepting credit card (gift cards) or specific gift cards, that are council compatible?
