  • Thanks. looking for Western Digital 4TB WD Red Plus. Are there any deal on this?

Fine but just get a bigger drive for not much more $. Saves the hassles of buying again in a year or whatever when you run out of space.

      • You're not wrong, 4TB is ridiculously small for a NAS these days.

I have an 8-bay NAS filled with 6TB drives I built 10 years ago, it's basically full, so I'm always offloading stuff to external drives just to make space.

        • I set up a NAS with a ton of movies and all my photos and a bunch of documents and have only used 4TB or so - genuine question, what is that people do to use up 60 or 70TB? I see all these mindblowingly large setups on Reddit, but I have no idea what it is they actually store!

@Moondog: Lots of Linux ISOs normally

@Moondog: in nas land, 4tb is pretty far from a ton of movies unless they're all 200mb vhs rips

people have large media collections mostly

        • Yeah I think I built my 4TB NAS back in 2011 or thereabouts. Long since upgraded to 12TB drives a few years back. Considering how old 4TB is, these drives should be well under $100 by now to be filling a NAS with. I remember having change from $200 a drive, 13 years ago. I had to go to some effort though, a full import.

    • NAS drive is essentially a PC hard drive, with addition RAID features.

When they are not in RAID, it works just like a PC drive with almost no difference.

The "Life expectancy" is hard to say, I wouldn't say NAS drive will always outrun PC drive in terms of lifespan, but they do provide 3 years warranty as opposed to 2 years on regular PC drive.

Really need a deal on 8TB

  • Bigger capacity than i will probably ever need , maybe - who knows , but grabbed it ! Thanks.

  • Can it be used in an NVR for security camera recording?

It would work, but not designed specifically for that use case
