You don't purchase your own modem. nbn install the NTD box. Plugin your router to the nbn NTD box.

          • @Twix: Oh, thanks.
Will they charge for instlling the fibre and that NTD? Can I ask them to place it at the location in the house that I want?
            Thanks

            • @Averell: They wont charge.

No, theyll place it at the most convenient entry point for them; if it needs moving you sort a cabler.

              • @MasterScythe: But that's an optical fibre, isn't it? I guess it's not easy to move it around.

                • +1

                  @Averell: Fiber can be spliced.

But usually youd just have an ethernet cable run to a convenient spot.

                  Up to you.

                  • @MasterScythe: Leaptel's page is misleading. They asked "would you like to include a modem", then they gave two options: eero6+ or TP-Link :-(

            • @Averell: If your NTD is not a fibre box already (white Nokia with 4 downstream ports) then you'll likely need to pay for upgrades to fibre to the premises. Or in a newly-build neighbourhood they charge a one-off $300 fee for the infrastructure (for the fibre box/NTD, fibre connection box on the external wall and fibre from the curb to inside of your house).

If you're upgrading from FTTC to FTTP, check ISP promos and you may be able to save the $300 when on a NBN contract.

              • @xmagic: Thanks. Let me talk to SP/ABB.

              • +2

@xmagic: The FTTN to FTTP and FTTC to FTTP installation is free. nbn FTTP link. The $300 nbn new development fee doesn't apply here.

            • @Averell: No charge to install the fibre and NTD. Some installers will run conduit in the roof and some won't. If you want to run your own P20 conduit with a drawstring before nbn come over that will be at your own cost. You can ask but it really depends who you get. More info here.

      • can any one tell me is eero a good option if moving to say leaptel or am i better off going with the TP link option ?
what does eero do that makes it so special that it is being promoted by a lot of providers ? thanks

        • Mostly SQM.

eero 5's use CAKE, eero 6+ use HTB.

Word is, it disables on wan speeds over 500mbps (expect its a cpu limitation), so probably not worth it unless going the 250 plan.

      • I wouldn't go UniFi unless with the need of multiple APs, given I'm using UniFi (the full bucket) at the moment and very happy.

For non-power users, ASUS is good enough.

    • Any TP Link router will work your ISP, they mostly affordable.

I've been on NBN 50/20 for a long time and realised recently after upgrading to 100/20 that I cannot get more 67ish Mbps at my place, plus I've been struggling with my IPTV content being slowed down and blocked at times, I've decided to move to 5G broadband now.

    • +1

Yeah same here.. last time I tried 100/40 I could get the 40 upload but the download was hovering around 80

FTTP expected 2025 for me sigh

    • Which 5G broadband provider are you with?

      • +1

TPG 5G Home Broadband 100/20 although It's not connected yet, just placed an order.

        • I'm currently with Vodafone mobile broadband. Have been with them for 4 years, and thinking of jumping ship. The connection quality has been getting worse and worse since they introduced 5G at my place. I used to get 200Mbps 24*7 with 4G. When 5G came, it briefly gave me 250Mbps, and then gradually decreased. Now it's only between 40-60Mbps :-(

        • Live within 300M of a vodafail tower which has been 5G compatible for a while….unfortunately not available at my address……

        • 2 of my mates using TPG in the same area I live in and it's been adequately decent for them so thought of giving them a go. But I have the same fear TBH.

        • Terrible reviews on TPG 5G https://www.productreview.com.au/listings/tpg-broadband-5g-h… . Hope it works out for you.

          • @IrrumaboRex: I know mate, reviews kept me away for a long while but giving it a go with a couple of first hand experiences

    • +1

      A deal not for u doesn’t mean it ain’t a deal … for others.

      • +7

When you can get 1000/50 for $99 with swoop, leaptel, superloop and many others who have equivalent performance to ABB, then it’s not a deal.

        • +1

Exactly… not sure what ‘the ABB experience’ mentioned in the OP is meant to be.

          • @Ridiculous Panda: ABB has never been a good experience for Me, it’s always been worse than superloop and that’s already a low bar these days after being acquired by exetel

            • @Wiadro: might want to check your facts

  • +4

Man I really wish we would get better upload. For me, going from 100 to 1000 download speed isn't that exciting, but I would pay to go from 17ish mbps upload speed to 100 in a heartbeat if it was these prices. Unfortunately it seems like the only way to get 100 upload speed is to get crazy expensive plans that are like 2-3 times as much :(

    • -3

why do you need such high UP speeds

      • +1

Transferring files to a server is one use case.

      • +1

For me it's for media playback. I have my own plex server that I share with friends and family, and being on 17mbps upload is brutal for that. Having 100 upload speed would make things so much better!

      • +1

Because people deserve symmetrical home broadbands like in some other parts of the world.

    • +3

Launtel do 250/100 for $137/month or 500/200 for $195/month. Expensive! You'd ideally want to be having it on as a business expense if you require that performance.

      • +1

Exactly, and while I really want to have 100 upload, it's for personal use and I can't justify spending more than twice what I'm paying now just to have more upload. I just wish we had better internet plans available like NZ where you can get 1000/1000 symmetrical speeds for like… $69/month from memory? Or if you're really crazy, you cns even go up to a symmetrical 8000/8000!

    • NBN recently reduced high upload prices.
      At Leaptel, 250/100 is $120, 500/200 $150 and 1000/400 $230.

    • +2

The Ultrafast plan is proposed to change from 50mbps up to between 50-100mbps later this year (at no extra cost to retailers…).
      https://www.nbnco.com.au/corporate-information/media-centre/…

I'm mostly interested in the Superfast 250/25 plan changing to 750/50. Even the Fast changing from 100/20 to 500/50 would do! Currently on 1000/50 which is overkill for me.

This article summarises the changes better https://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/why-nbns-new-plan-to-tur…

NBN Home Fast, to move from 100 Megabits per second (Mbps) download speed to 500Mbps, and 20Mbps upload speed to 50Mbps.
NBN Home Superfast, to move from 250Mbps download speed to 750Mbps, and 25Mbps upload speed to 50Mbps.
NBN Home Ultrafast, to move from between 500 to 1000Mbps download speed to between 750-1000Mbps, and 50Mbps upload speed to between 50-100Mbps.

still on FTTN until late 2025.. rip

  • Couldn't be happier with Leaptel, they also renew my promo code when it expires so I don't have to keep jumping ship (involves asking them nicely).

    • Leaptel is $89

      • It’s $99 unless you are converting from fttn

        • Exactly and i tried to ask them nicely for 89 without conversion and they said No!

  • +1

    Leaptel is $89/month

  • -1

Why can’t they have deals on lower speed plans? Would be nice to have discounted deal $30 plan for 50/20 speed 😅

  • Really hate how NBN Co trying to push everyone to higher speed plans for more profit, while I only need 50/20.
They have increased the wholesale price for 50M

Will keep try hunting for 50M plans under $55 after my current $49/m plan with Pronto Broadband ends in July.

    • So Pronto has been ok for you?

      • +1

        Awesome, nothing to complain with.

  • superloop is cheaper for comparable plans

  • Other providers are cheaper and basically the same, don’t really think this is a bargain fwiw

  • +6

Leaptel would be a better deal for most people. Comparable performance and Australian based helpdesk if you run into problems. The fact that their new customer deal (1000/50 for $99) is for 12 months and not 6 months like all other providers makes it even more compelling.
Superloop have a good network and are also a good choice for most people reading this post, but not necessarily the best choice for people who are less tech savvy and need help.

  • +1

Nice plans, but my aim is to stay around the 50M plans for as little as I can. Was on 250/40 as part of a FTTN trial and other than periods of downloading the 'internet' the connection sat idle.

I've never in a rush and the big things I download now I won't get around to using for months, if a 70GB download takes 3hrs or 9hrs makes F all difference to me.

I'm with superloop and have speed days (3 per month, unused rollover to a max of 30), which mean if I need to download 1TB I can just about do that in a day.

  • +2

The high end plans are dropping in price, but the proletariat plans like the 50/20 I am on are increasing. So unfair. A 300/100 plan in New Zealand (unlimited data) is around $73 AUD, the same cost as a 50/20 plan is this banana republic.

And the high end plans here in AU are just for leechers, they have barely more upstream bandwidth than a 50/20 plan.

It's not Aussie Broadband's fault; I am not bashing them but rather NBNCo and the last few governments Australia has had.

  • +1

ABB happy to give you a new customer discount, but very quick to remove, and slow to drop prices to existing customers.
When they cut prices last year - announced before my monthly bill was issued, but they delayed giving me the discount for a month.
I've moved to another provider and still had stable internet.

    • +1

I'm with Leaptel and they've been happy to always renew my discount.

  • The plan was to be one of the top but still ranked 91 after the major upgrade. I believe NBN are ready for the higher speed, however, they still want to charge more.

    • +2

The original FTTP plan to 93% would have had Oz in the top 10. Oz is 91 because of the multi-tech mix trash. Now nbn are overbuilding FTTN and FTTC with FTTP.

      • Also, if they don't offer higher speed for less while people don't pay more, we will always at the lower speed. On the other hand, our mobile speed is ranked 31. Because its charged per quota, they don't hold the speed.

These are based on 2022 data. Hope to see better ranks in coming years.

  • my network is still 10/100mbps…….. :(

  • +1

Seems a bit crap that the usual ABB customers don't have access to good deals like this. How to not care for your existing customers, really. Their price is not the cheapest and tbh for the price of their 50/20, other places seem to offer better speeds. I've been an ABB customer for years but I have never been offered more competitive deals. I am really considering going elsewhere…

    • Ben Stiller voice - “DO IT”

    • I've been an ABB customer for years but I have never been offered more competitive deals.

I'm in the same boat, about to jump ship. When I raised with customer service about applying a discount code to my account, they were extremely reluctant. Only question is to go with Leaptel or Superloop?

    • I was with ABB and when my 12month discount was about to expire I called them twice (on different days) informing them that if they kept the discount I would stay and if they didn't I would switch. Both times they said no so I switched.

  • So, what will happen to these plans once NBN increase the speed from 100 Mbps to 500 Mbps, same goes with the 250 Mbps?

    • Wholesale price not changing afaik,
      100/20 becomes 500mbps/50
      250/25 becomes 750/50
      1000/50 becomes 1000/100

  • You can also use 1MONTHFREE that gives you the first month for free.

    • careful with this one, when i did that the "switch20" got deleted and was replaced

  • i hope this lasts for a while as i'm probably getting a new place soon

  • Horrible customer service from this Aussie broadband , I switched to More NBN the next day, they gave me 12 months discount at $94.5 per month for the 1000/50 plan because I have a CBA credit card, now it's back to $121.50, but still cheaper.

  • I thought $99 for 1000/50 was the new standard.

  • Switch from ABB to Superloop and now back to ABB due to this deal

  • When switching from ABB to SL, is there any ideal pointers to keep in mind ? like how long it takes for the migration ? whats the best date to cancel? etc ABB at it again with no deals for existing customers from what I can see

  • Optus 250/50 HFC for $85 with free 4g backup is cheaper..

  • Leaptel is $89 for 250/25 at the moment for their intro pricing.
I rang Superloop and told them I was leaving and they knocked $10 pm off my 100/20 plan.
So will stick with them…. (For now).

Always ring if you're off plan to see if they will give you a better rate!

    • Also Leaptel has offer for $99 p/m on 1000/50 for 12 months

  • As a user of Internet in WA, Aussie BB has always given me excellent pings when VPN’ed into my local office. My understanding was this is something to do with their POI’s (?) but it would be great to be able to switch to another service provider like Superloop for better pricing. Am I going to suffer in terms of latency if I go with one of the Eastern states focused providers if we churn?

  • Considered switching to superloop faster speed tier but static IP is keeping me with Exetel (FTTP 150/25 6ms $69.95).

  • Well, we planned to get the higher speed but then again these NBA dumbos don't setup it up on two-storey houses.

    • What do you mean? I have installed it at my place and my parents. Both are two storey homes.

  • Same price as superloop lol I'll stay ty

  • Any good deals around the $70 mark for 250 down? Not too fussed on the upload speed

  • Been with abb for years now. Especially since i got in on their shares as well . But have been thinking of moving as their prices are quite high and with interest rates etc , every bit counts. Sounds like superloop is what alot of people move to? I do hear some talk about exetel as well. I am on the 1000/50 plan.

    • Are you using HFC? What's the ping for your connection?

      • My place got upgraded from fttn to fttp and my parents place from fttc to fttp. My ping is usually around 1-5 from what I remember but can vary at times.

  • Any recommendations on meshed Wi-Fi that can provide gigabit speeds wirelessly, without breaking the bank?

I have an older TP-Link Deco meshed network and my wifi maxes out at 350Mbps (2.4Ghz and 5Ghz have the same SSID).

  • Hi all, has anyone known anything about ping for your connection? Let's say I am using Optus and having ping around 15. Will the ping be lower after changing to the AB? I am on HFC. Thanks

  • Don't understand these plans with super fast download but comparatively tiny upload speeds

    I'd rather a 100/100 service over a 1000/50 even though it's less than a 5th of the total throughput

    • +1

According to the news, the 50 upload speed might be able to reach to 100 after 1st May. NBN is removing the cap.

      • nbn used to define HFC Gigabit as 750Mbps with bursts up to 970Mbps for 1-50 seconds. The 750Mbps download cap has been removed and has nothing to do with upload speed. 1000/100 is coming later this year or 2025.

    • The multi-tech nbn mix can't handle it. 500/50, 750/50 and 1000/100 is coming this year or 2025 for FTTP and HFC users. 250/100, 500/200 and 1000/400 is already available on FTTP if you have deep pockets.

  • Does anyone know if moving to ABB needs a new modem for HFC connections? I'm coming from Vodafone.

    • Under Internet set up, usually select Dymanic IP as [Internet connection type] and clone current compute mac address for [Mac Clone] and should work.
