    Make it yourself. Super easy.

    • how much is the ingredients cost vs ….bottle?

      • +1

Depends on what's in your herb garden 🤔

You only make it yourself if you grow the basil.
Basil grows easily, and it is great to have fresh basil handy, but sweet basil is an annual.
So when the bush starts to die, it is time to make pesto.

Pine nuts are expensive, but the supermarket products use cheaper nuts, and lot of vegetable oil.

        • You only make it yourself if you grow the basil.

Or get it from flemington/farmers markets. it's not cost effective to buy basil from colesworth

        • I grow heaps of basil and have a vitamix but when I've made it's always tasted really grassy. Any tips?

You can't compare cost of making it yourself vs the bottle, because what you make yourself will be 10x better and healthier, it's a no brainer.

Glass making is a skill you may not possess.

      • Certainly more expensive. But you know exactly what you eat with only 5 ingredients. And not to mention cashew vs pine nuts..

    I will get barilla… but how is this one? : https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/409785/cla… ???

Jamie Oliver Green Pesto 190g $4.50 (Was $6.80) @ Woolworths
No idea if it's any good.

Coles Pesto is decent if you have never tried any other pesto.

Yep for the price the Coles pesto is tasty and good value, if you want to pay a bit more Barilla and Sacla are good.

Edit: Costco one is also good if you want a huge tub.

Aldi one is decent, even their pesto that includes sundried tomatoes for a different spin/flavour.

    Sacla. Just right.

    • +3

      it's the besto

  • Aldi green pesto.

    • Barely passes as pesto. It's the mcdonalds cheeseburger equivalent of a burger.

  • Cucina Matese Pesto Basilico, thank me later.
Can make two meals from one jar too.

INGREDIENTS:Basil (45%), Sunflower Seed Oil, Rehydrated Potato Flakes, CashewNuts, Hard Cheese (2.3%) (Milk, Salt, Rennet), Salt, Sugar, Parmigiano Reggiano PDO Cheese (1.0%) (Milk, Salt, Rennet), Pecorino Romano PDO Cheese (1.0%) (Milk, Salt, Rennet), Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Pine Nuts, Acidity Regulator (Lactic Acid), Garlic, Natural Flavouring (Milk), Potato Proteins, Spices. *Animal derived

Questionable. Why are there potato and sunflower oil there?

It's a cheap way to bulk out the product for more profit.

      • Still tastes the best of all the suermarket brands.
Has a higher basil percentage than almost all other brands and also has a much more rich cheese taste.

  • None of the pre-made basil pesto sold in supermarkets is using 100% pine nuts. All seems to use cashew in larger proportion, including barilla.
Not to mention the real cheese used in those products is just at 5% or less which does not make sense.
Basil pesto should only have simple ingredients: pine nuts, basil, pecorino/parmigiano/other similar cheese, garlic, and olive oil.
And yes, good cheese and pine nuts are expensive, and basil is also expensive if you buy from supermarket.

A friend made us dinner using one of the chunky basil dips, and tbh it tasted better than any of the jar pestos in the pasta sauce aisle. That’s our go to now, I find even using the Coles brand one tastes okay. Another option is to get fresh pesto if you have a good deli near you :)

  • Roza’s Pesto is by far the best option if you don’t want to make it yourself or buy it fresh from an Italian deli. Closest to real genovese pesto I have been able to find in the mainstream stores (supermarket / deli).
