Samsung Galaxy S23 128GB $779.35, S23 Ultra 256GB $1266.85 Delivered @ Samsung Education

890

I know I'm sharing a year and a half old phones but the base model S23 still beats the shit out of S24 in terms of SoC (SD vs Exynos). If you don't want to go through eBay or a refurbished route, get it from this deal.

The page says an added trade-in bonus of $100. So essentially like we always do, grab a $1 trade-in to get $100 extra and get charged $30 or $60 when you do not return your trade-in device.

So the final price of the devices with trade-in value/non-return device is:

S23: $779 - $101 + $60 = $738
S23U: $1266.85 - $101 + $60 = $1225.85

Note:
This is for those who do not want to buy an Exynos S24. S23 has a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip which is more power efficient that the current S24's Exynos.

However, the S24 Ultra is better than the S23 Ultra and is worth paying $250 more than S23 Ultra.

+1 for the Exynos bashing and the fact that Qualcomm is still the best SOC on Samsung's own phones

    • S24 make much more sense considering S24 line will receive seven years of major Android upgrades. Geekbench can stay in dustbin.

      • +3

The s24 Exynos has better performance than the s23 Qualcomm.

Power consumption benchmarks are irrelevant for real world usage, all CPUs are inefficient at 100% load, Exynos more than Qualcomm. The cause is the difference between the 4nm FAB process used by TSMC vs. Samsung.

The Exynos SOC has more cores than the Qualcomm equivalent chip to effecively compensate for its inferior power consumption, the CPU cores are practically identical between the two chips, both use the same Cortex design.

In the real world, when the CPU is limited to use no more than 70% of its maximum clockspeed (that is what happens in 'optimised' battery mode), the Exynos can achieve the same or better power consumption by spreading the workload over more, lower clocked cores.

I wouldn't bother importing an international model s24 to get a Qualcomm phone over a s24 Exynos phone, and I certainly wouldn't prefer a s23 Qualcomm to a s24 Exynos phone, it is inferior in every aspect except power consumption on paper

        • +1

Yes, but the S24 can't be bought for $779 at the moment, so at this price it's not worth debating subtle differences

          • @PhilToinby: I agree, I'm commenting on OP claiming the s23 has better power consumption. It doesn't. But understanding that requires understanding the details.

            • -3

@[Deactivated]: Yes it does, there is testing everywhere that proves it

              • +1

@bigbaddbaz: If you read my explanation and look at the specs of the two SOCs you would already understand that this isn't the case

Real world testing also proves the point
                https://www.androidauthority.com/exynos-vs-snapdragon-galaxy…

                • @[Deactivated]: Android authority are literally the only source reporting those results. With nothing but some graphs. Everywhere else reports, real world results included, that the sd performs better and has better battery life.

                  • +1

@bigbaddbaz: Can you share some of this so I can understand what you are referring to? I expect you are referring to benchmarks run at 100% CPU load like an antutu benchmark etc. I've already explained why a synthetic benchmark is irrelevant

Who is keeping their phone for 7 years?

        • You might consider to hand in your ozb badge if not keeping your phone for that long

          • @Jamesx: Or use Ozbargain to find a deal on a new one every 1-2 years.

        • handing it down to kids, or up to parents?

        • I do( 5th year running). I bought S10 plus since it's released. I do use iPhones 8 plus as stand by ( and for international number) and bought it when it was released.

funny enough, I still have OnePlus One ( First version, where you need invite to buy). everything works perfect except network.( due to old network being not supported anymore). I use it for streaming YouTube and some IP tv.

    • wtf why did they go back to the Exynos again, geez wish they'd give it up…

  • +8

S24 Ultra for $1,399.25 via below ongoing deal is a better value:

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/841541

    • -5

It's also twice the price! That's like saying BYD is better than Mercedes

      • Its more in comparison of S23U vs S24U.
If you want to compare S23, compare with S24 which can be bought for $799 vs S23 for $779.

        • -1

If you can show me where I can buy the S24 today for less than $800 without trading in a phone worth multiple hundreds of $ then I'll change my comment!

  • Looks like they removed mention of the $60 late fee in the fine print at the bottom, assuming they still charge that and won't charge the rest of the bonus credit amount of they don't receive the trade in?

I saw it said the $60 a few days ago.

    • Can't imagine why they'd remove that fee unless they're going to penalise you another way.

      • Less removing that fee and more so charging the $250 bonus credit later on instead. The wording changed a bit so it's a bit confusing now as to what they'll do.

    • **You must return your Existing Device within 7 days of receiving your New Samsung Device. A refund of the Security Charge will be processed within twenty-one (21) days following receipt of your Existing Device and the completion of our assessment process and completed our assessment. A Late Return Fee in the sum of up to $60 will be charged if the Existing Device has not been returned via Australia Post within 14 days of receiving your New Samsung Device. The Security Charge, Late Return Fee and any other applicable fees relating to Samsung Trade-Up will be processed by our third-party provider, Asurion.

      • Interesting, thanks! On the main website (not edu store) they didn't mention the $60 fee, but should still be okay.

      • So does this mean you will lose the $250 trade-in bonus if you don't return your existing phone?

        • Love too know too 😉😊

        • There's always that threat in the T&C's, but no one has ever been charged back the trade in bonus in the past.

    • Is there ant code for first 5%? I cant see it on check out

  • -1

Can anyone see a price on the S23+?

  • with no one i know of currently studying in uni, i struggle to find a way to take advantage of the education deal.

    is it just me?

    • +1

How about anybody working at a uni? Not sure if it works for teachers at schools too

      • It does. Anyone with a .edu.au email address. So most school students too.

      • tks but no one i know works in school either.. does public school kid's .edu.au email account work?

        • +2

Yes, it does work. Anything with edu.au at the end will work. You just need to be able to access your kid's email address to click on the link in the account validation email.

"S23 has a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip which is more power efficient that the current S24's Exynos.". —- many YouTube reviews says other wise.

for S24, if you play games and need higher clock speeds - get a snapdragon based ultra.
For daily use an basic video streaming and browsing, Exynos performs much better.

check latest benchmark tests from YouTube.

Too much bashing of Exynos here.

    • -8

      BS

    • If you are regularly in remote areas the Snapdragon is much better - https://cybershack.com.au/consumer-advice/is-telstra-blue-ti… - they wouldn't let these guys test the Exynos for reception! For general city use I doubt most would notice the difference

      • +1

In that Cybershack article, they do say that the newer SD8 Gen 3 in the S24U is still inferior in rural signal strength compared tot he SD8 Gen 2 in the S23U. So you can't really say in general to go with Qualcomm Snapdragon to get the best signal strength, it is now dependent on the chipset model.

(Obligatory just stack 69 different discounts and sacrifice your first born to Samsung)

I nabbed an S23 128gb for about $615 (excluding $30/$60 penalty for no trade in) from the standard store a few weeks back.

That was when it was $150 off RRP. Now it's $200 off so you can likely beat the price I got if you're mentally willing to jump through Samsung's hoops and have all the first-time codes intact (or have them prepared like I did). For e.g.

    Starts at $1199:
    - $200 off RRP sale ($999)
    - $250 trade-in bonus - $1 trade-in ($748)
    - 5% first-time purchase on the Samsung Shop app ($710.60)
    - $50 newsletter code ($660.60)
    - $100 loyalty code by bothering a sales representative ($560.60)
    + $30 / $60 penalty if applicable ($590.60 / $620.60)

I can't verify this because I've used my codes but I expect you can still stack everything. Price might vary based on when the 5% applies relative to the other discounts.

Yep, it's a (profanity) pain in the ass, but at that price, you're doing pretty good.

    • Does this stack / include education store discount?

    • +1

do they still do newsletter and loyalty codes?

i think similar deal is available for Westpac customers for those that don't have .edu account.

      • Not sure about newsletter codes - I had mine since last year and it still worked at checkout.

I got the loyalty code the same day I ordered. It took two tries. The first guy said they weren't being given for S23 purchases so I waited a few hours, asked again and got it. Seems to be luck based on who you chat to.

I don't think the newsletter or loyalty codes work on the education store. Standard store only.

        • Nice work and thanks for the info!
Sorry but what's the line I need to use for the loyalty code?

          • +1

@Bigempty: Just ask for one really, obviously say you're interested in buying a new device and heard of this loyalty bonus etc.

            • +1

@mangobango: Yep.. Turns out you just ask, didn't take much at all. Thanks!

              • @Bigempty: @Bigempty I asked and got a code via chat for an additional $100 trade in credit, but when I applied it I got a message stating cart not affected. Apparently the code is good for 7 days, I closed the initial chat window but attempted checkout the same day. Did you use the code immediately?

                • @Zolosun: Yea I used same day. Didn't know there was a day limit.

    • +3

How do you get the newsletter code? I'm trying to find somewhere to sign up.

      • Doesnt exist anymore. Was something they offered before but stopped late last year.

    • YOU FORGOT CASHREWARDS

    • What is the $1 trade-in? Any chance you could explain please?

      • +1

In my case, I traded in my S10e. It was valued at $40, but there's a section during checkout where you answer questions on the device's condition. If you say it has a cracked screen (whether or not it actually is cracked) it adjusts the trade-in value to $1.

To anyone unaware, if you don't plan on sending your phone in, you'll want to do this because you pay the trade-in value as a security deposit to Asurion and it's only refunded when they receive your trade-in device.

Also, the rumour is if your trade-in value is only $1 (and perhaps up to certain threshold), you'll only be charged a $30 late return fee instead of $60. I'll find out if this is true on Monday night which is two weeks from when I got the phone.

        • Okay great, would you mind replying once you know what happens with your non-return fee please? I just bought the S23 for $463 stacking coupons so will try to do the same thing. I have two phones that can't be traded in so might be safer to pay the non-return fee rather than send one in and have them find non-genuine parts.

          • @HongoBongo8: Hey, the non-return fee came in tonight.

I was charged $30. Assuming you have put a $1 trade-in value, I'd hope you'll get the same.

You got a crazy good deal btw, I wish I didn't jump the gun, oh well.

            • @DS Link: Hey, thanks for following up. That's great you were only charged the $30 fee.

Yeah, the deal was too good to pass up. Yours was too though, and unfortunately no one can predict the future. I wonder if Samsung would give you a voucher to make up for you missing out on the more recent deal.

  • Anyone else own the s23 and experience shocking battery life?

It mostly gets through the day, but by evenings around 8pm or earlier, I will need to charge.

My favourite Huawei mate 20 pro went through the day no sweat… :(

    • I get a good two days but I only spend a couple of hours browsing etc and calls. I never leave Location on and have an Routine to turn off Mobile data when in home/office wifi range. Its only a 3900mAh battery so was never going to be a powerhouse.

    • +1

All good for me, lasts a few days with the battery protection thing on too which limits it to 80%

    • Really? I thought they were supposed to be pretty good. I used to use Mate 20 Pro as well, then moved to an iPhone mini. Battery sucks on this.
Recently I picked up a S23 Ultra for the great battery, but the size is too much. I sold it, thinking I might look into the base s23

In the meantime, I fired up the old Mate 20 pro and it's still good. I'm considering just going back to that 6 year old phone

    • unless im really pushing it - lots of video recording, GPS, music on a weekend i would probably bring it down to 5-10% by bed time. But on most days ill have at least 20% or more left, most of the time more during weekdays.

      • So weird, maybe I have a dud…

  • Have a S21 Ultra, worth upgrading to 23 Ultra? No huge problems with my phone battery will almost last me a full day but recently phone has started restarting when it gets stressed a little

    • +3

Bro, listen to your inner ozbargainer.

    • +2

Wait until there is a significant advantage of upgrading, for example if the new phone's camera is actually better than what is in the s21 ultra

    • S21U is a great phone, but if you have battery issues, it's time for an upgrade

  • +2

    I'm a hater of Exynos but I'm glad I got a 256GB S24 for cheaper than this.
    128GB is nothing

  • +1

Last weekend tranferring some photos in Uncle's samsung S10e. Still super fast after all these years. I don't get bashing of Exynos and Samsung UI. If you wanna play games in mobile and chase 1 or 2 extra Fps then Steam Deck make much more sense.

  • +3

You can get an S23 from the main Samsung website right now for $714 if you're quick. ($999 base - $100 discount - $250 trade-in mistake + $65 penalty)

Despite the trade-in bonus being changed from $250 to $100 this week, at checkout, it still applies the $250 bonus by mistake.

    • Super tempted to upgrade from my poco X3, might bite if I can get a loyalty voucher!

    • Thanks Heero, just did that myself now

    • What's the $100 discount? I only get the $250 trade in bonus.

      • You open a chat window and ask the sales rep for an S23 voucher. They'll either give you a 10% discount, or a $100 voucher. If they refuse to give one, then try again later with a different rep.

    • By trade in mistake, do you mean you opt in for the trade in bonus of $250, then never send your phone in? You're then charged a late fee of $60 but you still keep the $250 bonus and your old phone?

  • +1

Will the trade in mistake work with store pick-up?

  • Should I grab the S24+ or S23Ultra?

    • s23 ultra, I have used both and currently on s24+ only due to it's size factor, it doesn't have anything extraordinary like s23 ultra or s24 ultra, good luck

      • size difference is big factor between S24+ And S24U. and not many have good daily use case for pen.

  • +1

Nice deal! What's the go with the $1 trade in? What device do I select?

  • I don't have an IMEI number??

  • Is the offer available for the 256GB version?
And does anyone know if the S23 will go on a mid year sale in June/July?

    • Been waiting around for the 256gb base s23 as well. Stock seems to be nonexistent on samsungs website for the past 5 months and low at most in-store retailers

      • They likely would have stopped manufacturing S23 when S24 came out so just selling whatever stock they have left.

        • Agree. The worst part is ive rarely seen it on sale under 1000. I feel like the S24 has often been cheaper.

            • @8azinga: Yes, only been In the market for one since the start of the year

          • @_tony: I really want to avoid the S24 because it's a clear downgrade, with an Exynos chip that gets hotter, and it has a virtual proximity sensor.

If they had the S23 256GB on sale I'd buy it. 128GB simply isn't enough storage for me.

  • Just got the email for the secret sale on the regular site. the S23 Ultra is $1266. I jumped on the live chat to ask about a voucher and there are none available (only the $100 trade-in bonus which I don't want). You can use the app with 5% off first purchase, bringing it down to $1203.

    • What about S24U?

Edit: nvm I checked it too. It's not in the list.

      But the code is SSFIVE
