Best Car under $7,500?

What would be some good make/ models to look for under $7.5k?

Buying old and high mileage cars are inherently risky. Only do so if you think you are good with cars / have a mechanic with you. Could need major replacements and cost more than the car.

    My choices:

    <$10K MK5 Golf GTI
$10K NB mazda mx5 or mazda 3 mps
    $15K 2012 GT86

Worries about reliability of older cars. Recommends old VW? Seriously?

Noone recommends out of warranty euro cars to the type of person that asks what cheap car should i buy.

      • agree, terrible recommendation, none of those are below 7.5k anyway - not that anyone should be buying them 2nd hand ever.

  • a Jap.

  • Honda Accord Euro

    Honda Jazz GD3 VTiS

    It is God's chosen vehicle.

  • Nissan Tiida.

Ugly as hell, but very reliable MR18DE engine and transmission. Parts are cheap too- this is coming from my dad, a now retired Nissan mechanic of 30+ years

honda accord euro - why has no one mentioned this?

    • I mentioned it about 5 posts above yours ;) it's a good choice

  • I just bought a 2011 Getz. Needed some work, but otherwise in great condition. Paint, interior, engine in great condition. Goes pretty well with a 1.4Ltr engine.

    • don't you have to have the pedal to the floor almost everywhere you go? ;)

      • No! Hardly have to touch the go pedal.

I bought my son a Getz for about that kind of money a few years ago. A great little car (until he wrote it off!). Economical, cheap to maintain, most spares still easy to get. It drove really well, cheap to insure, it's got AC and the radio has Bluetooth. Good value motoring IMO.

  • Sounds like you thinking about buying a car.

didn't think 'best' and $7.5k are synonymous in the context of cars in Australia.

  • Suzuki Swift 2005-2011. But if you can get 2012+ for under $7.5K that is a win

Another vote for the Getz. Simple, humble, reliable motoring. Cheap to buy, parts are plentiful, proven engine/trans. Not the most “flash” option, but it’s arguably the most sensible one in this price range.

Aim for an 09 model or later, and if you can stretch it, the 1.6 engine. The 1.4 is fine but the 1.6 is better.
