This is the email I got!

Dell Technologies takes the privacy and confidentiality of your information seriously. We are currently investigating an incident involving a Dell portal, which contains a database with limited types of customer information related to purchases from Dell. We believe there is not a significant risk to our customers given the type of information involved.

What data was accessed?
At this time, our investigation indicates limited types of customer information was accessed, including:
Name
Physical address
Dell hardware and order information, including service tag, item description, date of order and related warranty information

    It's OK, you can trust the government with ALL of your information, they'll never get 'hacked' like these other amateurs. :)

      I don't understand why this comment was downvoted.
      It seems like everyone here is OK with their personal information being shared with anyone on arbitrary basis (and yes it will be on arbitrary basis once you get that public-private partnership going).

      Oh you are eating out too much, you bought small size condoms on Amazon, you are donating to these as of today non-kosher organisations, you had mental health consultation last month, you have X demerit points on your license (your insurance is 300% more expensive), you won this much money at the Casino… and all of that accessible through a single connected ID that hopefully never gets hacked. Welcome to 1984!

      Ironically media here hysterically complains about social credit system in China, while we are building 2.0 version of the same thing

        Problem is 88% of the population are sheep and will just follow whatever authority does / says :/
        (there was a famous psychology experiment where random people were instructed to give increasing and eventually LETHAL electricity shocks to "others" - and 88% of people did it without question because the "authority" in the room told them too)

        You see it here in the forums all the time ;)

        I am learning Mandarin so I can protest my allegiance to supreme world leader Xi when China win WWW3 and it becomes apparent to the masses as to how a social credit system v2.0 becomes global and suddenly relevant :/

              @7ekn00: I concede, I read the abstract, and it is mostly true to your words.
              I must say that the part of your comment that led me to call BS is the capitalized "LETHAL", by definition someone had to die right? Did anyone actually just get executed in that study? or like were some people allowed to press buttons and they chose to press it when it was labelled "lethal" (I don't have PubMed).

                @postnut: No, it was all "faked" by the people on the receiving end, but that was not known to those administering the shocks!

                Those being instructed would turn a dial that controlled the severity of electrical shocks - the dial even had the word "Lethal" on it that the sheep were told to administer onto subjects, but clearly chose to ignore when an authority told them to do it …

      Any database can be hacked, government databases are no exception, plus all your information is going to be shared with all the other five eye nations through their intelligence agencies.

      The more information the government gets on its citizens, the easier it is to fine you for any infraction.

      It can get quite scary very easily on how much info can be found on one person.

      With your name and DOB I can bring up your Medicare number, Health Identifier, address etc through HPOS and later your My Health Record among other things. Fortunately not just anyone can go accessing HPOS but still a lot of information that can and will be easily abused.

We have also engaged a third-party forensics firm to investigate this incident. We will continue to monitor the situation.

    What can I do?
    Our investigation indicates your information was accessed during this incident, but we do not believe there is significant risk given the limited information impacted. However, you should always keep in mind these tips to help avoid tech support phone scams. If you notice any suspicious activity related to your Dell accounts or purchases, please immediately report concerns to [email protected].

    When did people here buy from Dell? I've bought from their normal online store a number of times over the years, and also from their outlet, which required a separate login, a couple of weeks ago.

    Scale: 49 million customer records, (more or less) worldwide
    - ~7 million are individual people
    - ~11 million are general companies
    - ~rest is enterprise/partner/schools/etc

    Data exposed:
    - Full name of the person/company
    - address
    - city
    - province
    - post code
    - country
    - Unique 7 digit service tag of the system/product purchased
    - product shipped date
    - warranty plan
    - serial number *(monitors only)
    - Dell customer number
    - Dell order number
