Am usually put off Fiji airways because of the inconvenient layover duration, but these flights seem pretty reasonable. It's not a bad way to break up a punishingly long flight sitting in economy.

As per usual, the only gripe seems to be the additional fee for a checked bag. I thought these guys were supposed to be full service.

    • How much do they charge for checked?

    • Also immediately saw this

yeah my sister was (somehow managed to get refund) planning to go LA with fiji and was shocked that it didn't include luggage and it was like 200 USD or some shit like that. how fked up is that.

imagine flying qantas and then finding you have to pay for luggage

      Why complain?
The price is so good !
Additional checked baggage cost wont be a deal breaker so wont change your decision to take up this offer

Nice if you are on their new A350 but pass on the days with their 737max.

Melbourne to Vancouver $1,390 (booking direct) is a good deal too.

    • i dont think you have a choice of what airline model the airline company uses

      • Actually, from Melbourne the Max operates some but not all the flights, so I'd go on a Monday or a Thursday to target the A350.

  • Anyone know how long the sale will last?

i'm a bit turned off sadly going to the states, our crappy australian dollar is such a turn off atm, its best going to japan atm with 1 aud to 101 yen at time of writing!

plus going to the states is still doable but just need to be aware it'll be double price everything you'll pay, e.g. 20 USD burger, plus hidden tax 2USD, plus tipping 5 USD = 27 USD which at time of writing is 41.39 AUD

Yes, me too! I do enjoy a US trip but the weak dollar is extremely off-putting.

Also, their tipping culture has gone too far. I understand the culture of tipping a server at a restaurant, but the last time I was there and used a self-serve screen at Starbucks, the machine suggested I add a tip. Seriously, tipping the MACHINE?

yeah i was fortunate to do a 6 month trip around the states in 2013 when our dollar was above 90 and it was great because i didn't have to worry about the exchange rate being shit and as much as theres the perception of usa being shit with all the shooting that can happen, USA has good places to see still.

anyhow yeah their tipping culture is a bit crazy, when i was there in the states during that 6 month trip, i ordered takeaway chinese food, went to the resturant to collect and they were even suggesting for me to tip,wtf why would i tip for picking up the food myself bloody crazy

on a layover in hawaii i bought a bagel, it came to $27 aud - I was shook

      • +1

gosh bloody crazy, i'd like to go back to hawaii as i've been there 3 times but yeah shitty aussie dollar and prices of stuff going up is such a turn off :(

100% Japan over USA (except in summer when it's pretty damn uncomfortable).
Just got back from the states and our poor exchange rate + USA prices + tipping is ridiculous. Like you mentioned we'd have a fairly basic lunch which would be $40-$50 per person and really not great. Everything smells like weed or urine. Public transport is 50:50 - it'll be fine, or you'll be fearing for your life. In Japan, everyone is quiet, polite, considerate - whereas it's just about the total opposite in USA.

tl;dr screw u america, I'm going back to japan.

  • Used to fly direct on Virgin, but last time we went to the US, did via Fiji. Arrived early morning, and then left that night. Went to the resort near the hotel

Was a good way to break up the flight

    • stop over at fiji with virgin, sounds nice to break up the flight but sounds like you're taking more than 24 hours just to get to LA then

  • Thanks for share those flight. Does Fiji flight have any good deal from Melbourne to Chicago?

    • Fiji Airways aren't cheap if you try to book with them beyond USA west coast.

Wait for another United (shudder) sale OR if desperate cobble together two round trip fares at your own risk:

Option 1: Book the above Fiji for MEL to LAX. Separately book a US carrier ie Delta for LAX to Chicago.

Option 2: Book Jetstar MEL to HNL. Separately book a US carrier ie United for HNL to Chicago.

The connections are at your own risk so leave a decent transfer gap and have a backup plan if you miss the domestic flight. Look for travel insurance that covers missed flights on unprotected connections.

      • Thanks for sharing! HNL is a really good idea to stop over!
