Care to share why you returned it? Isn’t it as good as it gets for portable PC? Or was the idea more exciting than the reality of actually using it? I.e. just another console to juggle with the other ones already in the house with an ever growing backlog?

      are you ok

    • +11

It had such a myriad of issues for me, but most shocking of all was performance. I had a ROG Ally previously, and it just didn't hold a candle to it. It was ungainly to hold, crashed a tonne, build quality of controllers felt poor, awful controller ergonomics. Just so many issues for me personally.

      • +8

Just buy the Steam Deck it's perfect.

        • +8

Literally what I did, the OLED has been exceptional.

          • @cc23: I guess it’s more efficient only having to run lower res as well.

          • @cc23: Exactly why I got the OLED after returning my original LCD. I wasn't too impressed with the OG LCD. But since getting the OLED and going through my library testing things out, literally blown away at how great titles run and look on it.

My next long haul is going to be a breeze.

            • @Ruddaga: I got oled monitor and dont think its as good as SD, its a great little screen indeed

      • It requires a lot of tweaking. There are some cool aftermarket things you can get for it that'll also make it pretty cool. Depends what you are doing with it. Just AAA PC games you might not be too happy.

    • what was "reason for return" provided to BigW? Guessing that would have been tricky business.

      • +1

Not really, I took a bunch of videos of it crashing, breaking, controllers disconnecting, dpad not working. It was shocking tbh.

    • +3

      Objection your honour, leading.

The two options you're providing for OP to respond to are after the first question mark are oddly specific.

      • +2

I’m trying to justify not buying one. Please help me save $1k.

        • +11

You just need to put your money away in an investment so you don't have it front of mind. May I suggest a high yield luxury car

        • Things are getting pricey. That's one week's worth of groceries right there.

Sometimes ‘thirst’ can be confused/ mixed with ‘hunger’….

Similarly - What I did to avoid spending on this is:
Played the game (I imagined on this device) on a laptop PC (and also SteamDeck) - and the urge to purchase went away within minutes.

performance wise the steamdeck oled destroys it in frame pacing on battery. the software experience is better, it's cheaper.

I had a Legion Go once, I use to think the bigger the console the better. But after using it for a bit it felt clunky, way too large for travel, loud fans and still too hot, ridiculously high resolution, even though it scaled with 800p it still looked worse than the steam deck. The only pros i could think of are battery life and the detachable controllers are a nice thing but other than that I wouldn't go for the legion go. Ended up getting a secondhand ROG Ally of marketplace for $650

    • ROG Ally is far superior imo, I cannot fathom why you'd buy this Lenovo one with the new Rog Ally next month too.

      • +10

        Asus support is terrible

        • +1

If you ever need support, you're already screwed tbh, Lenovo, Asus, doesn't matter and even worse is Valve which literally doesn't exist here. Best buying from Aussie retailers and forcing them to help under consumer law.

          • +2

@cc23: Valve at least has repair manuals. Asus will disassemble your product and send it back and charge you for it.

            • +2

@Caped Baldy: Again, best way is to just pop back to JB Hifi or wherever and sort through them, Australia is the best for this.

          • @cc23: I had to return my Lenovo laptop for repairs recently. Wasn't too bad.

It came back scratched up though. I had to send it back again. Otherwise, it was quite painless.

Missed out on the last deal. Just picked one up. Was looking for a multi use device and I think you would be hard to find anything that fits the bill as nice as this. ie couch gaming, portable windows workstation, xbox cloud gaming. Yes you could buy a gaming laptop…. But this and a portable screen is a better form factor imo. Anyway YOLO. Thanks OP was looking yesterday and couldn't see a deal.

    • +1

Glad it was of some help!

  • I been using my Surface pro 7 + Gamesir Galileo S8 to make my own.

How you get the controller to stretch that much?

      • +1
        1. Use hairdryer to warm up adhesive pad on the middle of the controller.
        2. Pull back and unscrew all the screws on it and the ones underneath the front plates on the controller face itself.
        3. Use knife to carve off two little plastic stoppers that prevent the spring mechanism from extending further.
        4. Reverse steps and you can pull it out a suprisingly good length.

There's a few YouTube videos that will give you all the detailed steps, but as always this voids your warranty.
I recommend testing every single button thoroughly first. Mine came with a LR button that wasn't working intermittently, didn't notice it until after I had done the mod.

    • Pro 7 - presumably it's only streaming and/or light specs-requiring gaming though?

I'll share experience with the Go. Note, I replaced Windows with Bazzite which is amazing and basically gives the GO the Steam Deck experience so my experience may be very different to Windows users.

    Positives:

    • Screen is very good - Wife has Steam Deck OLED and I find it's close in quality yet the larger size really helps and is flexible with 16:10 resolutions.
    • Buttons and sticks are very good - equally as good as the deck, sticks probably a bit better.
    • Performance is excellent (within realistic expectations - much quicker than the Deck)
    • Fan noise is not bad, and remains fairly consistent and device never seems to get hot, but fans do run constantly.
    • 2x USB-C ports is a godsend, both support charging.
    • Comes with an excellent high quality protective case, like the Deck - Ally does not.
    • Track pad is much appreciated when it's needed in the underlying OS.

    Not so Great:

    • Battery life - but I expect it's similar for the Ally, Deck is better in this respect. The Z1 chipset doesn't seem as efficient at low TDP limits as the Deck. So on pure portability, the Deck wins out.
    • D pad isn't all that nice to use, but is certainly functional
    • Ergonomics are poor for lengthy sessions, even though I have large hands.
    • Rear buttons get in the way, so I map them out to no function.
    • Has features I'll never use like detachable controllers
    • Fan is always on
    • Speakers aren't great if you aren't using headphones.
    • Must use at least a 65watt charger. Device is picky about this, cannot charge on lower power supply which limits flexibility.
  • Great price. Came from an ally which I had for 4 months, but for my use case, I prefer the Go. Use at home for casual gaming (Diablo 4, emulation), but occasionally as a PC docked with a 43” monitor. Runs great.

Detachable controllers make it a lot easier and reduce the strain of holding it for extended periods which I found with the ally. If lying down I just prop it on my chest and keep the controllers at my side.

Trackpad is needed especially with windows, found a lot more utility from the device with that.

Always preferred larger screens, but could see how people would prefer more portability.

I also use it as a tablet, albeit a bit heavier. Take off the controllers and turn it vertical.

    • “If lying down I just prop it on my chest and keep the controllers at my side”… my man living in the year 3000.

      • Or just doing what Switch owners have being doing for years already

  • +7

I had all three, here is my view:

    Steam deck OLED

    • Screen nice, good battery life
    • Doesn't support all games, not FC24 —> no go.
    • Can't use as a "PC" replacement (e.g. no windows) —> no go.

    ROG ally

    • Screen meh, a bit too small, cheap build quality
    • Good software, seems to just work

    Legion Go

    • Love the screen size, big enough to use Roon and as a mini PC when on the go (with a mouse)
    • I prefer the build quality over the Ally
    • Basically my main pc now, experimenting with egpu (childhood dream)
    • The software is terrible, ordered from Kogan and it came with Windows locked to Chinese. Had to full restore and buy a different license. Windows has no wifi card support, so I had to do a heck for the installation.
    • Fan is noisey, slightly annoying.
    • But, everything is setup, its nice.

    No one is perfect.

I’ve read that the LeGO has had a few updates since launch which has made it a hell of a lot better

    This true?

    • Still work in progress for them but things surely improved, from bios to simple battery management.

    asking 8.95 for delivery 2127

    • Yer no pickup

  • Ok Sony question is for anyone who can answer it

My Mrs plays Fortnite on her switch which is like crap so I eas thinking about getting a Legion GO for us to share so she can play Fortnite on it too

Now, on the switch she turns it on and presses Fortnite and plays it. On the Legion GO, how long would it take for her to start up and get Fortnite up and running?

Also, how goes the battery go with Fortnite on the LeGO?

    • You can install library management like PlayNite or use the base Legion software on login. Then you would select the title and it’d probably be quicker than it is on Switch.

      • Thanks

        • switch has suspend function, in windows you need to turn on from hibernate which is not as fast as switch suspend function.
windows sleep function will recover faster but some game might still running under sleep mode for whatever reason

someone has tested it here https://www.reddit.com/r/LegionGo/comments/17qu0sn/i_tested_…

but no matter what it will never beat switch suspend function

  • I am looking forward for XBox Showcase on 9tn June, Phil liked it even so he did mentioned that few things would require changes as a Xbox mobile gaming device.
I am hoping they are gonna announce something.

If that doesn't happen, Steam Deck is the way, it runs Linux so far better hardware experience.
Anything running Windows is just a shit show, Xbox is just great because it doesn't run Windows per si so I am hopping Xbox mobile gaming device will follow suit.

Before someone say Asus ROG, that is the biggest scam, check Gamers Nexus to find out what can happen to you if your device goes RIP. It also has been reported to have joystick problems which is how the whole scam was discovered.

  • Rather wait for next year APU from AMD. It would be a really good handheld from the get go.

    • rumors swirling that replacement for z1e/7840u is still 16cu rdna3.5, not sure it'll be a huge uplift at this end of wattage scale

gpu is really the limiting factor still, but it'll be a bit more efficient

  • Been using the go for few weeks and lately installed ubuntu in dual boot.
Windows require A LOT of f@ck1ng around to get things going (to me that's a bonus as I love to fiddle with things and can fine tune the experience a little bit more) but I use it exclusively for gaming (pass), while ubuntu provides for a stable and safe every day experience.
Installing ubuntu was a breeze and everything was running without needing of configuration, a thing of beauty.
To me it all falls to a single factor, while choosing an handheald..
Do you like to tamper with things? Go Legion go.
Do you want a seameless experience for gaming without having to keep things in check every second day? Go Steam Deck.
I don't understand people complaining about legion quality, lenovo products are solid as it gets and feel premium in hand.. if anything, they slow asf on the software department but the community provides most of the time.
1k is a good price for the machine imho, I'll go for it if I was on the fence.

    • Do you want a seameless experience for gaming without having to keep things in check every second day? Go Steam Deck.

Do you mean for example if I play Fortnite on it and set up my settings to what suits me best then it can change and I have to do it all again

      • No but it will take a moment to fine tune the video settings to run optimal on windows, plus you might have updates that break things and can be frustrating. Steam deck its more of a plug snd play experience. Honestly tho they both excellent experiences and doesnt matter what you pick you gonna have a blast, especially if you grew up when handheald AAA gaming was an unreachable dream

    • You should check out Bazzite which has a dedicated release built for the Legion GO. It's based on Fedora Silverblue and turns the GO or other handhelds like the Ally into basically a replica of the Steam Deck. There's also a bunch of youtube videos on it if you would prefer a non-window solution like I do. I installed Bazzite on my GO day 1 and will not go back.

      • Yer sounds decent but if I don’t and stick with stock do I need to keep changing settings in games to play them

      • Yea I know, I nearly got there but opted for ubuntu to have a bit of fun. Will def give it a go on a rainy day

  • OOS btw everyone
