Heard they fixed it last year. It's a bit more lighter and smaller in the hand than this, if you care for it. And I would vouch ASUS probably has a bit better quality and support than Lenovo.
Still tho, the Valve SteamDeck OLED has the better control layout and ergonomics, value for money, battery life, and long-term (console) support. I think those factors could overcome having the slower processor and the less supported OS/software.
But you can't go wrong either way!

Also, US but not Australians get an extra year warranty, replacement of concole and also credit for dead SD cards.
No fix from Asus. They have been accepting RMA orders but apparently they're literally swapping the SD card reader for another of the same make/model and it's likely it will have the same issues. They were asked outright if the "fix" will remedy the issue and they just avoided the question. Personally if I were in the market for one I'd be getting the steam deck no questions asked.

You can upgrade the 2242 SSD or buy an adapter from Aliexpress and use a 2280. I have a 4TB P3 Plus that was being used in my Go. Temperatures were high but manageable around 64 degrees during high gameplay with Thermal pads.
Also you can print 3D Backplates and mount your 2280 SSD in there so cooling is better. Lots of choices. Returned my Ally after sending it in twice for the microsd card issue and I can tell you that the Legion Go with its 8.8" Screen is an absolute beast.
Depends what you want in a hand-held.
Best windows handheld (probably) at this price, if you're after that. You trade power for less playtime and no resume feature compared to the steam deck
Thankfully, there are third-party tools like Nyrna and Game Pauser by Jase that are similar to quick resume on Steam Deck.
I keep thinking about all this but haven't pulled the plug on any handheld yet, as my 7-year old Switch and nearly 9-year old GTX 970 PC are both still going well for some reason.
Ergonomically, no. Software, also no. Hardware is basically the same as the Ally and better than the Claw (and twice as fast as the Steam Deck), but the Lenovo has a few extra features like touchpads and detachable controllers.
You may also want to consider the smaller Chinese brands (Ayaneo, GPD, OneX/AOKZOE, etc). GPD has several models with some cool innovations if you want something different.
What's the other brands repairability like?
Steam Deck is designed to be user servicible and parts are easily available which makes it a plus for me.
double the performance? in standardised testing the SD oled trades blows on 0.01% frame rates, unless of course you use them as a mobile gaming device and unplug them from the wall and the SD wins out in most titles. if you are buying for the least significant figure in benchmarking then this is a winner. if you are buying for smoothest frame rates, highest performance while on battery, longest battery life, most polished device.. SD oled wins out.
There are some nifty things that help the SD's performance (eg the pathetic screen res), but there's no way it can compete with a CPU with twice as many cores that are also clocked 50% higher. SD also has a number of games it won't play (blocked for anti-cheat reasons).
Do those tests again on games like Starfield or Baldur's Gate 3, and try to run them at 60 FPS with some level of eye candy. Any game the Steam Deck can play, the 7840U handhelds can play just as well, and they'll look better to boot. Run them at the same TDP and resolution as SD and your battery life will get closer to the SD which is larger and heavier because of its bigger battery so everything is a trade-off.
Personally I wouldn't buy a computer that's effectively 3 years out of date already, especially not for gaming - I want to keep it for years, and I know next year's games probably won't run on older hardware very well (if at all). I'd rather invest in something newer and more powerful for its longevity.
@Nukkels: Well i looked up BG3 and the SD oled gets almost double the 0.1% fps, the same peak fps when both devices are running bg3 at the same res on battery. battery tests on the Legion go where you limit the tpd turns it into a stuttery mess obliterating it's 0.1% frames. i personally wouldn't spend more money for something poorly optimised that it can't beat 3 year old hardware that has half as many cores and a lower clock when it comes to smooth frame pacing. ie that thing that makes game play smooth. I mean it's disappointing i can't play a handful of competitive fps's. that is the number 1 reason to buy handheld consoles.. but as you said. trade offs.
Would jump on this if I knew the Manufacturing Date of the Legion Go units in hand at Lenovo. Been holding off for the "updated" 2024 units that have supposedly fixed the Fan coil whine, Shaky loose controllers, audio speaker issue and also have the updated case.
I bought one unit from JB last month and it was the October 2023 batch and the unit had the controller issue together with the whining fan.

I have not heard of anyone having the first two issues. For the audio, FX Sound (free on Windows Store) has solved the audio problems for me.

Next iteration of the Ally to be revealed at Computex in June with a sale date of sometime this year if leaks are to be believed. Given the amount of sales to dump units by both Lenovo and Asus, I'm inclined to believe the leak is accurate so if you aren't hankering for a cheaper unit now I'd wait to see what the next iteration looks like.

Yeah since no worthwhile apu successor has been announced im thinking it will be closer to a refresh.
Apparently the 8840U in the GPD WIN 4 shows a small improvement over the last generation as they added the NPU without increasing the TDP so the CPU and GPU must be more efficient.

Bigger screen than Steam
I was considering legion go, but went with the $899 steam deck OLED deal over the weekend. This is cool and all but thinking it’s kinda like an underpowered portable windows laptop? Hmm

When compared to a laptop yes. But for me the steam deck is more portable, more console like with a dedicated OS that’s well supported.

This is alot more fiddly and requires more trouble shooting than a steam deck though.
Battery life is also really short… Comparison to a Windows gaming laptop isn't that much of a stretch. This is also pretty chunky.
Super powered. I replaced my 1080Ti gaming desktop with it and love it. Powerful enough, flexible in usage.
How's the legion perform against a 1080ti? Does it match /beat performance?
Pretty close from my experience. I'm playing Gears 5 now and am getting 90+ FPS. I'm not sure my settings but looks great. You should check out some of the many reviews if you want more in depth detail.
@dawtips: No way it's close to a 1080 Ti… Quick research online shows it closer to a 1060. I'll run some benchmarks once I receive mine

Paid $1,600 for oneXplayer with U8840, 32gb ram 7500mhz (same clock speed) & 1tb SSD 7,000mb/6,000mb speeds.
I prefer Lenovo for warranty purposes, but 16gb is not enough.

They share RAM with the graphics, so if you want 8GB for that, then windows is left with only 8GB which is definitely not enough.
I'm so torn, I really want to try it but if I don't like it, I can't return it and I'll have wasted a grand .. I'm concerned about the weight for the most part

you'll have wasted around $100-200. It's not a dead product, you could sell for 8-900 if you don't like it.
I did a lot of research before settling on the OLED Steam deck with the last sale.
The three handhelds are all great with their own pros/cons.
This one is easily the most powerful of the three, but lost points with reviewers because the innovations fall a bit flat with the detachables, and the battery life is apparently not that great.
I landed on the OLED as it will be purely from flights when I travel and I have a 4090 PC for the majority of my main gaming (And a 3070ti laptop - 17 inches though so not really great for flights and travel).
If you're on the fence and this would be your main way to PC game (especially if you can plug it in) I'd say get it.
I've been mulling over this myself. As much as I would love to experience the slick Steam Deck, I went with the Legion Go, primarily because my game library is split between Steam, Epic, Rockstar, GOG, UPlay, plus I subscribe to Game Pass. With a Steam Deck I'd only have access to part of my library which is a massive deal breaker.

You can apparently get the others running on the deck but who has the time for that. I'll just play those at home.
there is third party launchers to add support for those things.
I mean you can always play games from those libraries on deck too, its just a bit more work.
What I found was that work was a lot less than the amount of fiddling, troubleshooting and fixing stuff the legion needed by a fair bit and even then the deck just works better once you have stuff set up.
and frame time error. windows is poorly optimised for smooth frames.
