$30 USD more that the deal back in March https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/837669 but I think still a great deal for a powerful 8 inch android tablet. Also Lenovo recently announced android 14 update for August and security updates until Feb 2028 so should be well supported.

Worth mentioning it's a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 so people can judge how powerful it actually is…

Besides the thermal efficiency being below average the sd8g1 is pretty good, and the thermal issues should be mostly a non-issue with an 8.8" tablet. IIRC a reviewer said that it takes about a 5% performance hit for extended gaming seasons (compared to my galaxy s22+ which chokes at about a 35% reduction in performance)
Edit: just realised its the sd8+g1, so thermals are much better

    • This type has sim slot for 4g/5g?

      • No there’s just a TF card slot.

For the most part, mobile CPUs are pretty stagnant at the moment so a SD8+1 is still a great chip for gaming. What's weird is that at least within Australia, Legion line is supposed to be gaming focused, but I don't see this device at all gaming focused, beyond the big legion brand on the back. There does not seem to be any extra cooling hardware or anything that differentiates this from any other SD8+1 device, worth keeping this in mind as I am positive there are cheaper options out there with this CPU/RAM/Storage combo.

I also wonder how much input lenovo themselves have on this device, or if its somewhat an external venture with some branding slapped on. Just spitballing, by no means an expert but these devices have always been a smidge off to me, especially the fact they wont bother selling them in bricks and mortar stores.. that could just be Lenovo reading the markets general consensus that if you need a tablet you just buy whatever iPad suits your needs.

Lenovo China shit all over Lenovo US when it comes to hardware and software. It's an original design and not a rebadge or anything.

The main selling point of what makes this better at gaming than other devices with the same CPU is the screen size. Bigger than a phone and smaller than a bulky 10" tablet so it's still easy to hold.

There's also two USB-C ports for video out, USB DACs and even bypass charging. So you can supply power while gaming under load without recharging the battery, generating more heat and potentially throttling the CPU.

      • +1

Thanks for the clarification, the pass through direct power supply is an awesome feature alone for gaming so thats a win. Do you know why they aren't selling them locally?

        • +2

Probably because the Australian market is so tiny it's not worth it financially.

          • @Munki: Our market isn't that unique though, added costs of bringing it to market here is what, a different cable? These days its a pass to not even provide a charging brick so even that's out the window. Worst I can see is added warranty because of ACL and the rest, but its not like Lenovo are strangers to that either, they are already in the Aussie market.

            • @doobey1231: Lenovo's market share in Australia is probably miniscule. They're predominantly seen as a "computer" brand here and not really a general tech brand. I'm sure they've done market research to see if it'll be worth entering the mobile market in Australia or not. Hell, look at LG and even Sony. They pulled their mobile ranges out.

              • @Munki: None of that really rules out offering it to the Australian market if its destined to be a global release. Just doesn't make sense to me. LG and Sony dipped from our market cause of dwindling sales.

            • +1

@doobey1231: Honda has to sell their car as a 4 seater here whereas its a 5 seater worldwide lol. So you can tell how much of a pain in the arse this market can be for one so tiny.

              • @fuzor: Same with a car I recently bought, but Indian car, Mahindra Scorpio, was meant to be a 7 seater and then were forced to go for a 6 seater and because of that the car isn't selling as well. Shame, it's a good car.

              • @fuzor: Car =/= mobile device - very very very different requirements for both to be sold to the general public. Tablets aren't dictated by vehicle ADR.

                • -1

@doobey1231: No sh#t Sherlock. But it just goes to show how unnecessary regulations can make everything in the economy difficult and expensive. Then add on our handling charges on top for extra greatness.

                  • @fuzor: It doesn't show anything genius, its totally irrelevant of course different products have different regulations. Feel free to point out any regulations that would be preventing this device from an Australian release..

        • Prob the same reason why Xiaomi doesn't sell their flagship phones here, red tape and they already have enough business elsewhere

        • This particular model is getting released in Europe (Legion Tab branding), UK (Legion Tab branding) and Japan (under NEC LAVIE branding). However the price is HORSESH*T 599Euro!!!!!

If this was sold in Australia I can imagine them not moving a whole of units.

    • What other 8 inch tablet has the sd gen 1/2?

      I'll wait…

  • +3

This one is having a global release so there will be an official global ROM that can be flashed. There's a Japanese version too from a different brand that works.

    • Any ETA on the global rom? I'm assuming it's not like the ones we had before for the previous tab where you were better off with the China rom rather than the 'global' rom

    • +1

Been happy with my China Original ROM. Mostly English bar a few apps. But you get to know your way around it once you have a few goes. Namely the Lenovo Store to update the apps.

    • +2

Be careful with the foreign ROMs you can actually brick your device because of the e-fuses. If you flash higher and then use a Foreign ROM that hasn't caught up then you end up with a brick.

  • +2

My Mi Pad 4 is still good but I hope something like this is still around when it dies

    • +2

I have the same. It's great to see tablets in this size still around I thought they were all gone.

  • I was really keen to get one of these for local game streaming from my PC until I read that the wifi is pretty poor. Anyone with one of these got opinions on that?
    Or anyone else have alternatives?

    • Funny, I was gonna replace a Huawei m5 with this because it's wifi dies when you turn Bluetooth on. Hate to have the same shitty wifi issue

      • Only option I've seen so far that looks to be well built and have got software support is the tab s9 but that's rather expensive and I'm not a fan of Samsung's Android skin

        • I've already got an S8 ultra and wanted something smaller to game on. First world problems, I know.

      • +1

I literally just did this, replaced my old Huawai m3 with the y700 2023. No wifi or any issues, very good tablet for $4XX

        • Can you share some details?
Stream bitrate, decode time and how far you usually are from the router while streaming?

          • @DeToxin: Ah wifi is a tough one to share as everyones devices and environment is different.

Router is a few rooms away, and I get 550mb down, 860mb up using wifiAC2100-5Ghz

I stream games via Geforce Now which happily buzz's along at 1440p/60 using around 50mb/s with around 20ms total latency.

            • @cheapdoodau: Ah, I was thinking you use moonlight to stream from a PC in your home

    • Not this exact model but on my pro pad 2022 my 5ghz band wasn't showing up in wifi until I changed the channel to one of the lower ones… Anything under 50.

      Haven't had any problems

  • Just beyond my budget. Can anyone recommend a good 7-8" tablets in the $200-$300 range please?

    • +1

      Samsung a9

Or you can find the older version of this in ali for about $360.

Keep in mind the 8" tablet space is pretty barren, it's either this or povo spec tablets like the Samsung.

      • Thanks. It's either this or a refurbed iPad mini 5/6.

Was hoping iPad mini 7 would come out soon.

    • I bought an iPad mini 5 from Green Gadgets for $300 last week - mint condition, battery excellent - could not find anything I like amongst the new mini Android tablets so the mini 5 will suffice for now

    • Good specs will help it last longer. My two year old sammy is as good as new with the top spec chip of its time. You don't want to be stuck with a crappy paperweight with terrible performance

  • So tempting

  • Mine arrived last week. Took a fortnight to Bris. Flashed the global rom using Rescue and Smart Assistant. Bootloader unlocking not necessary.

    • Do you have a link to the steps? Would help a few people on here so they go to the right place. There are so many guides out there and some of them are like super sketch in the way that they tell you to do things in terms of unlocking bootloaders etc.

  • no 5G

    • -2

My phone does. Hotspot is all it takes.

  • -4

If I were going to go for AliExpress, almost $500 for a tab, expected this to be cheaper. Wouldn't Samsung Galaxy Tab A9+ 128GB at $397 be better?

    • +3

Absolutely not lmao. A9+ is worse in basically every way compared to the Y700. The Y700 has 8+G1, 2xUSB3.1, Wifi 6, much much better display

  • Still waiting for Lenovo Legion to update this tablet to 8 gen 2 or 8 gen 3. This is the perfect size tablet to be honest in both gaming and multimedia consumption.

    • The only upgrade introduced in the 2024 variant is an OLED display. Still the CPU is more than enough for gaming.

      • This is cheaper than the previous model that I bought 2 years ago by about $50 IIRC. It's stuck on android 11.

        • Android 12 (ZUI 14) and 13 (ZUI 15) are available for the 2022 variant. Do you have one with a "global" ROM?

      • Really? I didn't know they have an OLED version. Anyway, the Y700 started from using SD870 to now SD 8+ gen 1. That would be great if they have OLED variant because I think it was a budget choice for them going IPS 144Hz which is not bad especially for longevity of the screen but definitely OLED would look great but not so much for the lifespan of the screen.

  • Deal seems over; Sorry, these coupon codes have already been claimed.

  • I have this model. Everything’s good except that even though the screen should support Dolby Vision/HDR, Netflix/Disney+/Prime Video will only play in full HD. It does have widevine L1.
