I should have waited and bought this instead of Samson sr850

    • +1

In my opinion, SR850's with better ear pads outperform the Ships for most types. Add a few extra mods and you have some of the best value headphones.

  • Nice.

  • Wow these are the classics

Open back means everyone will hear what I am listening to right?

    • +2

      Yep

    • +1

Wouldn't recommend for anywhere other than home.

      • +13

Gotcha. Will get a pair for work then

wouldn't recommend for noise isolation in a noisy home environment

milady plays continuous other video soundtracks which were disturbingly audible when I used open-back headphones, and similarly my source from my headphones could also disturb her if she was sitting nearby.

my closed back noise cancelling Bose QC45 headphones fix that completely - I don't hear her stuff, and she doesn't hear my stuff. Both stay happy.

    • Yup, but better soundstage if you want good stereo and virtual surround sound. Frustrates me I can't wear open backs at work as I much prefer the sound in my Samson's over the much more expensive sony 1000 I have for work.

Definitely recommend these. I originally recommend them to reviewers such as ZReviews IRCchat just before they got hyped up. They’re hard to get now as classics these days. These headphones were at the time as good as the best Mid-Fi trio flagship headphones like HD600/AKG K701/DT880 and from a time when websites such as InnerFidelity and GoldenEars Changstar were popular for headphone enthusiasts just before RTings and AudioScienceReview SuperBestAudioFriends websites replaced them.

    • Are there any other worthy competitors in this price range other than the Hifiman HE400se?

      • Koss KPH30I

      • +1

Sorry. I’m not well versed in headphones these days. I switched over to in-ear earphones which is my endgame.

        • Does heat and weight ver long periods of time factor into the preference to over headphones, or is it all about fidelity?

          • @Bedgrub: No, Not really. Personal circumstances. I was on the move years ago moved house and commuted by motorcycle a lot. I preferred smaller audio. I sold my Stax SRS-2170 headphones and I remembered they had much better fidelity on them. I would definitely go back to them now, to what’s the recent available model. But I can’t afford them these days because cost of living and prefer my speakers.

  • Any recommendations for an inline boom mic to pair with this?

    • +3

If this is like the Fidelio x2, you can use a v moda boom mic.

Quality is pretty good and it has a little adapter to split the 3.5mm cable to headphone and microphone input, making it versatile. It saves my ass when using it for my MacBook for work and desktop pc for gaming at home.

bought mine probably close to a decade ago on catch for even less than this, still use them all the time.

great listening headphone and great for gaming.

Ikr, I feel old all of a sudden

      • +2

$57 in 2015 is about $71 in 2023 according to the RBA. Seems on par with inflation.

Is this over ear or on ear? I hate on ears, makes my ears hurt and go red after more than 60 mins.

  • +1

I wouldn't buy anything 'genuine' on AliExpress, unless it was for a knock-off price

    • I've personally never had any issue with scams or counterfeits on aliexpress. Not to say it couldn't happen of course.
I have bought cheap no-name stuff on there that turned out to be complete junk, but that's no different to ebay or amazon.

  • Philips website said not in production. So these are fakes?

    • +1

I tried a Google search on "fake Philips shp9500" and not much came up over the last decade. This model has been around for ages and priced as entry level Hifi so it would be weird to start faking an older value for money headphone.

      I did a search https://camelcamelcamel.com/product/B00ENMK1DW?context=searc…
It showed units were selling on Amazon till this time last year, 2023 at $69USD.

  • They're awesome, order the upgraded pads too and you won't be disappointed
