Probably good pricing for May 2024 but I'm surprised that the pricing isn't better than some of the deals on both of these phones earlier in the launch cycle through Edu stores, EPP, Samsung trade in bonuses, etc.

    • I would be waiting until June/July when the new Flip/Fold gets announced. Hopefully telco epp gets the discount vouchers and people uograde

    • +3

Best deals for Samsung always happens during release

  • General question, how many of these have you seen in the wild?

    • +10

Same amount of Ferrari I see in the wild.

      • +3

A Ferrari is more common than a flip phone in the wild

    • +5

A lot of flips, not many folds.
Beyond iphone pricing and huge depreciation play a factor

      • +14

I've seen more folds than flips.

        • +2

Agree. Me and several work colleagues have folds. No flips.

        • +4

I've seen more flaps than flips

        • What colour have you seen being used mostly?

          • @keepsmiling: The ones that didn't have some sort of case on them mostly were grey.

    • I know at least 8 people who have the Fold.

      • +3

Humblebrag about having more than 2 friends makes me sad.

        • If it makes you feel better, some of them are work colleagues. :)

          • +1

@eug: My work colleagues pick on me by making me do their chores and summon me at late hours to entertain their wives, so they can play DnD. But I want to play DnD :(

      • What colour is mostly used?

        • Black hands-down.

    • I see a Fold 5 literally 100% of the time I go out.

      • +1

How many times do you go out?

        • +6

60% of the time, it works everytime

        • @DealHunted …I own a Fold 5 is what I was saying ;)

    • Sister has a flip, neighbour has a fold. Seen a few people at the airport with one when they go through security. I'm looking forward to the fold 6.

In terms of your question, flip/fold owners arent like vegans, atheists and non-binaries that want to broadcast around every street corner that they have a flip/fold phone. Can't say I ask randoms or look into their pockets on what phone they're concealing

    • Not counting my own Fold 5 and wife’s Flip 5, I see a handful a day of both in the wild here in Sydney. When I was on holiday in Singapore they were far more common.

    • Everyone in Singapore had them when I visited. Australians think iPhone is peak luxury.

  • +4

Good deal. But a bit cheaper @ Samsung EDU/EPP.

I am kicking my self that I wasn't able to get this awesome previous deal for $945 because I was at work.

    • +1

Same… if I had started looking for Fold 5s a month earlier, I would have jumped on that deal and saved myself $1k. But the Fold 5 was my wife's birthday and xmas present and we had budgeted for $2k so with a discount voucher from Samsung, I could still afford it.

From a productivity point of view, the Fold 5 is pretty awesome. I still prefer my S23U though.

      • I had one for a few months and I don't think having two apps side by side wasn't that great. Compared to the pixel fold, the unfolded screen is taller and narrower. Apps become too narrow and you end up splitting it 65%/35%.

Went back to my old s21U and haven't missed it really.

I really miss my old Huawei mate 20x with its 7.2" screen though.

    • +4

Check the storage size again ;)
That deal you linked is for 256GB, technically cheaper at JB by $30.40 with perks discount

      • My bad, it's still early in the morning. Awesome deal. $1000 and might bite the bullet. 😃

    • the link says 256gb but OP posting 512GB

      • +1

Yes, my bad. I still wouldn't buy unless it's closer to $1000.

  • +3

Fancy, but I'm a boring guy who loves small slab phones

  • I tried the Flip 4 when there was a JB hifi offer to take it up for cheap. Will never go for a flip or fold device again.

Unless… There is an offer to take it up for super cheap again

    • Same. My experience with the Z Flip 3 was pretty bad. Phone itself was fantastic, but it felt even more disposable than a regular slab phone. Had to get the screen protector replaced 3 times. Each one got a tear in the protector where it folds and it made using the phone really annoying.

I wonder if these will do the same thing.

      • +2

Samsung admitted the adhesive they used for the Fold/Flip 3 was too weak. They improved it with the 4 (not enough apparently), and improved it further for the 5.

        • So hopefully should have the issues sorted by flip/fold X?

          • @xuqi:

So hopefully should have the issues sorted by flip/fold X?

I haven't had any peeling protector problems on the 5 so looks like they finally sorted it.

        • Get them to service the pixel cluster.. I had black spots, seemingly a know issue and they just gave me a flip4 instead. That also got black spot after a year use, but this time they just replaced the screen instead.

  • +2

My Flip3 is serving me well still. Other than the screen protector peeling off at 14 months and a stuck pixel cluster near the fold.
Love the small form factor for pockets.

    • +6

14 months and the screen is on the verge. This is not the definition of "serving well"

      • +1

Oh, stuck pixel came only recently not at the same time as the protector. So over 2 years later.
I realise that wasn't clear in my post.

  • +3

Got the Flip 4 for $495 on super cheap sale and will wait for FLIP 5 to be the same.
I have however loved the phone since day one and probably won't go back to non folding (flipping?) phones again. Unless something compelling comes to the standard boring phone slabs…

    • -1

To me they just seem to be a midrange phone designed to fit in a purse.
The fold is a bit more compelling.

      • +1

Flip is one of the smallest phones you can get while the fold is one of the biggest.
The overlap in use cases is only in the 'folding' phone novelty.

        • -1

Screen size is the main difference where a fold has merit the flip seems a trade off to be small.

        • The flip phone is not at all small other than when it's folded:

          https://www.phonearena.com/phones/size/Samsung-Galaxy-Z-Flip…

          • @MrFunSocks:

The flip phone is not at all small other than when it's folded:

That is exactly the point of a folding phone. It's small when you're not using it, it's big when you're using it.

      • Does not feel mid range at all, feels like an S variant. I came from S7e, s10, s21, s22 to this.
I find the fold the least compelling of all smart phones. Would rather a normal slab over those oversized devices.

        • I class the base S models as mid, below that are budget and the ultras high end based on specs like camera, ram etc.

  • I'm wondering if I can trade in my flip z3 after 3 years of folding the screen. I kept the screen protector on for as long as I could before removing which extended the screen's folding life (and it looked brand new once I peeled it off) and while it doesn't look that bad, especially compared to others on Reddit, the creases are visible (looks like some light scratches). Otherwise my existing flip is in rather good condition.

Has anyone had issues when trading in their Flip?

    • IMO trade it in when there’s huge Samsung trade in bonuses typically at launch of the new product and posted all over OzB!

  • Missing those trade in deals

    • +1

For those wondering, it’s for the Flip 5
Had to check as at $945 it would be a steal!

      • My bad. Was looking a the jb part of the post.

  • +2

Used flip 3 and fold 3. Sincerely I don’t recommended folding screens because the durability isn’t substantial. My fold has grown bubbles from top and bottom of the hinges. They connected and locked very ugly. My friend’s flip screen was gone after a few poke of pen by his infant daughter. I know that’s the compromise but at least it won’t happen easily on s series.

    • +1

The screen protector on the Flip and Fold 3 is known to use weak adhesive; Samsung admitted it and fixed it in the 4 and 5.

BTW if I remember right you can get free screen protector replacements for the first year with the 3, and 2 years with the 4.

      • For any fold/flip you can just walk into a Samsung store and get the screen protector replaced, no need for proof of purchase, 10 minutes of your time and you're laughing. But do agree with the 3rd generation, had to do it more often than I would like.

    • My fold3 interior screen protector started bubbling at the hinge after a year. I just took it off and it was fine, even felt better with it off. I dropped it on concrete without a case like 6 months later and cracked the OUTER screen, luckily was still under samsung care so had it replaced and they never mentioned anything about the interior screen having no protector.

Still currently using my replacement fold 3 with a case now as the care has run out. Might look to try trade in for a fold6 on release to refresh the samsung care. Using the phone without a case is so nice.

My only issue since is that I dropped the newer fold 3 while it was open and now it won't open up to 180 degrees anymore, only like 175 ish.

I had the OG fold, fold2, flip 1 and fold 4. All their screens broke in a year. For the fold1+2, I used them naked like I do with all my previous phones, fold 4 had a case because I wanted it to last. Went back to an iphone a few months ago because I got sick of them breaking. I would advise potential buyers to not treat this as a regular phone. A quick search on reddit and the likes will provide ample examples of people having their screens suddenly die. The worst part is Samsung is absolutely the worst when it comes to warranty for their foldables. If you have ANY damages on your phone when you go to get the screen repaired, they'll blame you and refuse warranty. They contract out the work to a third party and those guys will try every excuse in the book to get you to pay. Just wanted to provide some personal insight for potential buyers. Sure, there are a lot of people that is happy and fine with their folds as well but this is definitely not a phone that can be treated like other phones.

A quick search on reddit and the likes will provide ample examples of people having their screens suddenly die.

Do be aware of confirmation bias as that's a classic example. If you search for examples of dying screens, you will find examples of dying screens.

It's no different to searching for plane crashes - you will find plenty of them, but that doesn't mean your next flight will crash.

They contract out the work to a third party and those guys will try every excuse in the book to get you to pay.

I think that's where the problem is. Your third party repairer might be more strict with damage than others.

FWIW for another anecdotal data point, I had the Fold 3, 4, and 5 and didn't have a problem with any of the screens with a year's use (except the 5 of course; it's not a year old yet). The screen protector on the 3 did peel in the middle but I got it replaced for free.

    • Anecdotal but I got one of these from the last deal for ~$1200. Screen developed a patch of dead pixels next to the crease, it looked like there was a camera hole. This was just 2 months in. Sent it back to Samsung in store to repair, they didn't try to fight it since the screen was basically brand new. Sold it for a profit after, just wasn't using the big screen like I thought I would.

    • If you have ANY damages on your phone when you go to get the screen repaired, they'll blame you and refuse warranty

Can confirm. Had to keep escalating when mine broke while opening it as they claimed impact damage.

IMO Fold5 is a great as a 2nd phone if you have another phone as a daily driver. I couldn’t use mine as a single phone. After few days of trying I am very happy to go back to my Pixel.

In my use case, the front screen is way too small to type comfortably. The folded screen is very comfortable to type and browse websites but you have to fold the phone open to access it.

I used to say and remember posting it here as well that I would not buy a fold as I prefer to carry 2 separate phones with me at all times, but after getting the Fold5 I’m very satisfied to have the fold as my 2nd phone :)

    • +2

I’m in same boat. My default phone to carry is still my iPhone 14 Pro Max but if carrying two then I’ll bring my Fold 5. I treat my Fold 5 more like a more portable tablet than a carry everywhere phone. I do love multitasking on it though.

      • That’s why I’ve always loved small tablets like the iPad mini. I was hoping this form factor could fulfill both purposes. A phone and a small tablet in one. But it seems it fails as a phone. Which is a shame from my perspective. I don’t see much value in a device at this price to use as a secondary device. Each to their own though :)

  • Honestly hope they follow suit of other foldables with the fold6 and have a wider outer screen, my main complaint, even beyond the crease.
