  • what monthly mobile plan is the cheapest for this device? looks like gonna need a 4g sim for this.

ALDI PAYG. SIM $5 for 60 days, then $15/year

      • +1

        you legend!

      • I think amaysim also has a PAYG plan, and you can charge minimum $10. Great as you can just change your plan from any of the discounted sim packages that are giving profit in the past.

        • +1

They don't seem to advertise it on their website (unless I'm blind), but you can still search for "amaysim payg" and follow the link.

Some Amaysim plans are only offered to existing Amaysim customers, and you can only see the plan when logged in.

        • Yeah amaysim starter pack for 28 days (usually $15ish on sale) when activating choose PAYG 365. I use these for other gps trackers. Mine doesn't use much data at all so for $15 should last whole year. Only thing use browser when activating as found app is hit or a miss. Had to call on one card but went smooth on support and got activated.

Is this good for our friend JV 😀

Can we not just microchip our oldies like cats and dogs?

    • +1

Those microchips don't have GPS. Or send an SMS when they get lost or fall over.

      • +1

Good points, nobody steal my new business idea, Patent Pending

      • Yet….

      • +3

Should be OK for GPS if they've been vaccinated. That was the fundamental flaw in the "vaccines have tiny trackers in them!" claim - they forgot about a data plan to communicate back to HQ!

  • Wonder if this is 3G only.
My mums ones are getting replaced as they are 3G only on telstra.

6 hour usage per charge ☚ī¸

    • Do you know if the batteries are replaceable to a higher capacity?

  • +11

Monitor your elders at 4-8 hour periods max and hope that despite them never charging their phone for the last 10 years they'll definitely remember to charge this. Especially with zero visual aid to say its low and it simply beeps and vibrates lightly.

Don't rely on these, please. You're loved ones will not use it right, it'll end up as uncharged junk and when something bad happens you'll blame yourself.

    • +2

Might be good for other tracking purposes…

      • +2

True. for 4-8 hours. Once. Better luck hacking an Air tag if that's you're thing. $30 each and last 6+ months

    • +1

      Low Battery Notification
The guardian will be sent a low battery notification

      • +2

With that short a battery life, why bother with a notification? You know it'll only last a few hours. If tracking someone prone to wandering for whatever medical reason, this really isn't a great option.

Even a cheap smart phone will last longer than this and you've given the person being monitored a reason to carry it unlike this single use device.

It might not be as useful in a less populated environment, but an AirTag would be a better tracking option than this.

I've been using a ReachFar v45 for about 18 months. 4 days battery life, GPS (with chinese tracking servers), LTE , one button calling, quiet mode & a heap of other features. Good for kids / elderly. Aldi 365 SIM $5 + $15 recharge (I used $3 of data in 12 months). Shop around $80 ~ $120

    • +1

Is that one of the trackers where you can edit the config to use different servers and point it to your own? It's a bit of a bit geekier option than most trackers if wanting to avoid Chinese servers, but customised or not, your suggestion is better than this thing.

      • +1

Yeah supposedly you can throw some AT commands at the modem & tell it to use a roll your own server. I've never had the time to sit down & try this tho. By default it uses igps123.com - I just used anonymous data when signing up.

  • Samsung phones have SOS mode for this kind of thing. I'm sure there are apps that can be set up to do the same thing with phones. It's worth seeing if a particular phone has this feature built-in, for future reference.

  • +1

Better use a generic android phone
Google cloud service is the best

  • Can you use these to track your significant other who spends hours shopping when the shops are closed ?
