        Probably because there's a time and place to get political and a deal for some airline tickets isn't it.

        I'm no fan of China's government or their international relations but plenty of people do need to travel there to see their families because no one gets to choose where they're born.

        That being said, this is OzBargain and shoehorning political debates into every post regardless of relevance is pretty much standard operating procedure now.

        Look at the travel numbers, China is at an all time low, no one is going cause its getting worse and worse in the country, the government is even buying up gold reserves at the moment, if you know anything that alone should be extremely concerning. All the natural disasters and failing infrustructure don't help, if I were going overseas I'd choose a country that isn't about to economically collapse. So in short they are desperate to get money into the economy hence the cheap flights

            1) you don’t have a Chinese ID, how can you purchase a SIM card in China?
            2) Most of Chinese Apps require verification codes, if you cannot buy a SIM card, how can you use these apps?
            3) In most of Chinese restaurants now, some Chinese apps are required to place an order, if you cannot use these apps, how can you place an order and pay the bill? Let me remind you, some Chinese apps only didn’t accept foreign debit/credit cards until last year.
            4) If you don’t have a Chinese ID, how can you buy a train ticket on your own? Let me remind you, in Beijing, now you are required to have a Chinese Id to buy a subway ticket.
            5) If you don’t have a Chinese ID, you are only allowed to stay at hotels for foreigners, so your choices are limited.
            6) Now, most tourist resorts require reservations and they are only available on the Chinese Apps. If you don’t have these apps, how can you pay a visit?
            7) Now Chinese governments remove English translation of descriptions in various places and use Chinese pinying instead, do you understand the meanings?

          As someone from China being in AU for over 18 years, China is great place for travel, the reason China doesn't promote inbound travelling is the demanding from domestic travel is already very high, so there is less motivation to make change for inbound traveller.

      I often go to China and have NEVER experienced racism there - unless you count being treated as an honoured visitor as "positive" racism. The people are by-and-large lovely. Furthermore, I feel safer there than in Australia - and that with fewer police (or at least less visible).
      Am off on Hainan airlines to China again next week (flying Hainan again), and really looking forward to it.

      By the way, the Chinese would have every reason to hate Europeans, noting our disgraceful behaviour to them a century or so ago - British making drug addicts of the people and forcing unwanted trade (romantically called "concessions") at gun-point (same method as was used to lease Hong Kong for 100 years).

Only time I've had an issue was with myholidays over covid and they still gave me credit. Generally the OTAs are cheap, but if you need to deal with customer service…..let's just say that's not where they spend their time.

          I was replying to mooreshady's comment about 3rd party websites - referring to OTAs - online travel agents. Eg Myholidays, Gotogate, kiwi, all indexed by beatthatflight. BeatThatFlight is an aggregator/search engine for flights, like kayak/skyscanner.

      I find trip.com to be really good, and they send updates about your flight (etd changes, gate number/change, boarding commencement). Can't recall ever having a problem with them.
      Plus you can book trains, etc. too.

    What is the best city to visit if i want to see culture/temples/art and have good internet access for remote work?

      Beijing and Nanjing in my opinion. For temples, history and all that.
      Otherwise, consider Shenzhen - an amazing modern city.

      Definitely consider Xi'an. Apart from the warriors, the city is quite ancient, and you can see the original walls (5000 years old from memory) as well as the modern walls. The food is awesome, and there's quite a bit of history too obviously.
      If you're working remotely, you "might" need a VPN, and there are only a few that work in China (which ones work changes often, but Nord isn't one of them at the mo).

    I thought that the biggest cost for airlines was fuel so where do they make the cost savings? Hopefully it isn't maintenance.

      If it is your first visit, you'll probably only get a 30 day single entry visa, which I don't believe can be extended easily.
      Many larger city airports have a 144 hour visa free entry (on arrival) valid only for that city - you can't travel elsewhere.
      Pretty easy to find information online too, as the rules change relatively frequently.
      The visa application centre staff will usually give good advice when you apply.
      Currently, you need to apply in person, which can be rough if you live a long way from a capital city.

      I flew economy - no, no Hainanese chicken rice. It was typical, non descript economy fare.

      So many Chinese cities, it was hard to search them all ;) However, Hainan Airlines even flies to Nanchung. For example: https://bookings.beatthatflight.com.au/flights/MEL2607KHN020… has it at $577. I might run a search later if I have a chance, but you can also put in the dates you want into the search engine and see!

    Does the website allow layover/transit length? e.g. if wanted to stay in Hainan for extra 1-2 day to explore before transferring out.

      If you go to the filters, you can choose duration of stops, which might help. It's generally limited by the ticket though, so there may be a max that you can't exceed.

      I believe Hainan Airlines allows up to 7 day stopover without extra charge, however this perhaps varies with these OTA who charge much less than the airline direct fee…

    Those prices are through a website called flightnetwork.com.au, they have very bad reviews with cancellations and refund dilemmas. After getting bad experience with gotogate, I don't think third party tickets is ever a safe method to book tickets, thoughts?

      You can save lots of cash sometimes through them, but if something goes wrong and you need to contact them, they… don't seem to focus on their customer service…

      I always book personal flights directly with the airline now, after it took gotogate 2 years and 8 months to get a refund for my flight that I had to cancel due to covid.

      mind you I started chasing this up about 9 months from the cancelation date and was told it was "processing" by gotogate the entire time.
      I even called the airline directly and was informed they processed the refund to gotogate 1 week after it was submitted.

      Wrote it off and completely forgot about it until the money just appeared in my account one day.

    if you plan to stay in hainan you don't need a visa.

    there's also visa free policies in place which I personally use quite a lot for short work trips.

      Do you always fly direct into Hainan? Im thinking that, if I do a stopover on my way to Hainan - I may run into visa issues at the stopover (Chinese) location.
      Also, do you always stay in Hainan on this visa-free status or have you found that its possible to travel to other provinces once youve set a base?

    Business on the same flights is only about 1500 too. For some of these red eyes via Melbourne thats a really good deal.
