  • Depending on use, it would almost be worth spending the little bit extra for a Surface Pro/2 given the age/speed of these. I'm surprised the price hasn't fallen more tbh.

    • Surface Pro doesn't have Office bundled however, you have to buy it (estimated value is $120ish)

    • Can you suggest a Surface Pro/2 to buy?

I find it difficult to compare them to the T100s, and they seem a lot more expensive and the $140 keyboard sells separately, and I hear some versions of Windows are crippled somehow…

In my personal opinion, comparing Surface Pro line to T100 is like comparing an ultrabook to a netbook. Here are my reasons.

Basically Surface Pros are like laptops with pens that can work like a tablet (with limited mobility).

Surface Pro and Surface Pro 2 runs Windows 8, it runs the OS that your computer runs and can run programs that you use on your computer.

Pro 1 used i5-3317U, whereas Pro 2 used i5-4200U and 4300U (they changed the CPU because of throttling issues I think). The main differences lie within GPU capability (Pro 2 has better GPU), and most importantly, battery life. Pro 1 gets around 3 hours, Pro 2 will probably get 7ish hours? I am not sure on the details of Pro 2 since I only own Pro 1, but basically Pro 2 beats Pro 1 by heaps on battery life.

Surface RT and Surface 2 runs Windows RT, it runs different OS. It is fairly limited in its app, to extent that some people call RT=Real Trash, but it is lighter and cheaper. Unlike Pro 1 and 2, they cannot run desktop programs

Basically this came out for ARM processors, it runs differently etc etc.

It's sort of like Android and iOS since they use ARM processors as well, but unlike them RT really lacks apps. So I think you get the gist.

T100 came out with Baytrail CPU. Baytrail CPUs are like netbook cpu's, they are an Atom CPU.
So in simplistic way, they are like netbooks in tablet form.

They are limited in processing power but they use less battery and emits less heat. They are also fairly light and cheaper.

So comparing Surface Pro line to T100 is like comparing an ultrabook to a netbook, IMO.

I might've gotten some detail mixed up :S but this is all I can think of atm.

I hope this doesn't confuse you further, and help you a little. :)

        • Excellent, thanks very much for the info!

All I need is basic browsing and word-processing and a decent screen, but I definitely need desktop programs, so it seems RT models are out…

The cheapest Surface Pro 2 plus keyboard I can find is over $1000, which for me takes it into territory where you could get all sorts of different laptops (and of course the T100 is half the price)… hmmm, I'll keep thinking! Thanks again :)

Look into a Dell Inspiron 11. It is arond $350 (refurb) in the Dell Outlet.

          http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/review/dell/inspiron_11_3000_s…

In terms of spec, it's running a fairly lightweight CPU (Celeron N2830) but because it's a traditional laptop and not a tablet, the RAM and hard drive is upgradable.

There is a Core i3 4010U version of this Inspiron. However, the price is roughly double ($719) and it's way too much to pay for given that the Inspiron series are not that well built compared to the latitude series. I'd rather get the Surface Pro 2 for $800 ish.

        • @scrimshaw:

Note that the Celeron N2830 is also Bay Trail, though somewhat higher than the Atom range. But I'd consider that more than acceptable for light browsing and word processing.

Not the cheapest but OK price.

Why did you even post this then?

    • This.

  • It isn't ozOkPrice.

  • Can someone recommend an alternative to this? I am looking for a 10-11 inch laptop, and all the ones I've seen so far have specs similar to this…I'm looking for something a bit better. (Also preferably not a surface)

    • Dell Venue 11 Pro? I'd say that Surface Pro 2 is pretty much at that price range though ~$1000 for keyboard as well.
Also Intel Y processors… pretty much worse than U line :S

EDIT: Didn't realise that you wanted a laptop. There probably are a lot of laptops that can replace this.
