If you want that 10% student discount, make sure you are ready for all the trouble chasing up.
Online form have a box for you to enter your code, but it won't do the discount automatically.
For online chat, make sure you get a ref no. and save the transcript. 9 out of 10 Rep don't know or don't have permission to do it. They will just lie to you it has been done.

    • and ask the rep 50 % off for 2 months. This is apply for SIM only plan, I was offered this deal during my home phone connection chat

      • Where does it say 50% off for 2 months?

        • +2

it doesn't say anywhere, however when you chat with the rep ask for this, I hope the promotion still available.

This is was on 6/02/2017 @9:30 PM

Optus Rep:While you are here, can I know is there anyone else in your family looking for a handset plan or just
          a SIM only plan?
Me:I already have optus $130 and $45 mobile plan
Optus Rep:The reason I ask is that, if you add a new mobilephone service for $40 and above SIM only plans on a 12 months
contract, you will get 50% off for first two months

        • +2

          @TechVisar:
Just confirmed that this 50% off for two months promotion is only for new service but not recontracting.

        • +1

          @citygal:
Thanks for that, it will help for the fellow OZbargainers who taking a new service

        • +1

@TechVisar: Thanks guys, was able to get the 50% for the first two months after mentioning it to a chat rep.

I lost patience after 3 months of trying to resolve the 10 percent discount. Lodged complaint with TIO. Next day got a call from an Australian rep who fixed it immediately. Keep all correspondence.

    • I signed up a few months ago and I did it all online.
      Worked fine for me.
No longer a student now and still have it ;)

Although it took me months for them to actually give me my 2gb extra :(

  • Will appreciate if anyone with .edu who is not looking at signing up could PM me their promo code. Thanks.

    • +2

signup for this, and get a free fitbit to boot. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/285840

    • -1

It's not about email with .edu
They asked you to actually log onto the Student account page.

      • hmm for me it says enter .edu email

        • Oh they must have changed it. Before you gotta get the code from Unidays.

        • @citygal:

i used my work email and unknowingly qualified for the 10% ;)

  • Hey guys - happy to give one spare student code out. First person to reply to this comment and then PM me will get it :)

  • I signed up on last months offer, which had EPL, had no issues with the student offer. This offer has 2GB extra.

    • same here, does this offer includes unmetered epl? If so I would call them tomorrow for the extra 2gb!!

      • Does that work?

So you join a 12 month contract then call up the next month and they will throw in the extra data?

      • Last time I called them, youre only elidgble for the Optus sports unmetered if your Optus sports account is linked to the same billing account

      • Lasts months offer included unmetered EPL with 10GB only; I think they will argue that the current offer includes 2GB instead of the EPL; I found that its easier to watch the games on SBS unless you are after extras and on the go viewing.

  • Just a heads up - it says online only but they are happy to sign you up in store. Some stores also have permission to apply the student discount - I know the Liverpool store in Sydney does. I suggest calling your local store to find out if you don't want to go through the hassle of signing up online.
Currently kicking myself for signing up for the 10gb deal over the weekend and missing out on the extra data :P

    • Can you try to see if you can recontract again? Doesn't hurt to ask.

    • +1

Fyi all. Chermside QLD wouldn't do the offer

    • Can u get 12 gb at liverpool pls?
I was told they can do 10 gb only with student discount.

  • +9

Great offer but optus support is horrible. The absolute worst customer service experience I've ever had.

    • Second that; I was left stranded on the phone for 45 minutes until I spoke to someone from billing section that made sense; I should have asked for two months free now that I can see they are offering a trial

    • Obviously you have never been with Vodafone lol. I love Optus

  • +2

Here is a code for anyone who wants it: STU4DBLW16 :)

    • Hi Bnjam3, thanks for sharing your code. I tried using the code. The Optus check out page requests for the email address that goes along with the code. would you be able to PM your .Edu address?

      • +1

        Check your inbox

        • Thanks mate

      • Could I pls have your email as well?

    • Is it possible if I get your email too please :D

    • can i get the associated email address?

  • Man, I wish I could trade the free EPL for another 2GB of data. I've watched one game only.

    • Why don't you just re-upgrade? It will extend your contract but they should not charge you an ETC. (Telstra doesn't anyway).

      • I've got 6 months left on my existing contract. I'll definitely be recontracting or keeping the same plan if there's nothing better when it's finished.

        • +1

these deals are getting to the pointy end of the stick, already have unlimited local and to mobiles calls and SMS , so all they can add is more data hence voda vs optus at the moment. Telstra is stuck on their $1000 worth of calls at $1 per minute.

All I can imagine is 15GB for $40 sometime over the next 12 months.

Think I will hit them for the 12GB of data, and see if they can do the student price in store …..I'm a student of life.

If you get close to hitting the limit on data, they sell booster cards so you pay less then $10 for 1GB, almost needed one then next billing cycle started.

        • @garage sale: where do you buy the booster cards? I come close to (or exceed) the data limit when I work outside without wifi.

  • So tempted to recontract but I'd lose data share sims….

    • Did you ask about this? Would def be keen otherwise.

    • +1

checked with Optus billing. i have an existing $40/mth 10GB plan. and was able to recontract and still keep existing datashare accounts (2x).
I got them to confirm and email me the chat.
      hopefully this helps

      • Oh wow, that's neat. Might consider this then..

  • +2

I;ve been on $40 for 12gb since june last year…it think it was a system error. i signed up for 10gb and then 2 weeks later i received 1 texts saying they were adding an extra 1gb each time…i no complain. haha

My theory for everything is 'take them for all you can' and i find theres no reward for loyalty in anything these days. Those '### for new customers only' campaigns practised by all these large companies says it all.

  • Anyone knows if Vodafone will match this deal?

    • Vodafone will not be able to, at least in my case; their equivalent plan will be $50 with no EPL or Play, I moved because of this

      • What is EPL? Sorry,

EDIT: I signed up but couldn't see anything about EPL that's all.

  • just my 2 cents - I've been with Telstra for years. 2 months ago I switched to Optus because they had a cheaper plan. It was the biggest mistake, coverage was rubbish and I'd constantly get drop outs… this was around Brisbane. Even in my own house I could only get coverage in the back yard. ended up cancelling and returning to Telstra.

Do you still get the $10 bundle discount if you have broadband?
I am on the $40 a month plan with 10gb and get an additional $10 discount effectively making it $30.

  • can confirm if you have cable internet at home and it's under your name, you're entitled to another $10 off per month (as per live chat with old mate Anna)

    • I was told by Optus chat that you need to recontract your broadband to be eligible for the discount. I checked with another chat to confirm.

      • +1

That depends on which discount you're talking about. My old cable plan was only eligible for the $10 off per month, which I get at the moment, however there is a newer bundle discount at $20 off per month I believe.

To be eligible for the $20 off per month, I had to re-contract to one of the newer cable plans.

  • I have about 2 months left on an existing optus contract, would I have any issues recontracting from a higher cost plan to this?

  • I was told (via live chat) that the Bonus 2GB applies from the 2nd month.

  • -1

This is lame. I signed up for the $40/month 10GB deal literally days ago (and haven't even received my SIM yet).

Speaking to Optus both on phone and Live chat and they refuse to switch me over without asking me to pay a $140 cancellation fee.

    • Call them and say you wanna cancel due to poor connection. Under their fair go policy, they should cancel your contract without penalty if you're a new customer joining in the first month. You can sign up again online for this deal afterwards. But mind you - there's a lot of hassles especially an hour wait on the phone sometimes.

    • I'm a month into my deal, and recontracted via online chat with no issues or fees, and no hassles keeping my data sim and student discount.

Always have had a good experience via online chat.

      • I think Optus customer service is a real hit and miss. I've spoken to 3 people on the chat now, all of which have given me the same answer. Guess I will be taking this to the TIO to resolve.

        • Well, technically the terms are stated that you 'may be charged' a fee if you're moving to a contract that is the same or lower than your current. The advantage is to them, and they really haven't done anything wrong, if it is annoying. Though, I do hope you can get the switch done without any more hassles!

        • +1

@Ashman247: Don't get me wrong haha, I'm not being a brat and going to TIO just because I'm not getting my ways. They actually spammed me with "Complete your checkout" emails for a full day (48 emails in total) with the old deal, and then released the new deal days later.

      • I also recontracted with no fees after being on the 10gb for a couple of weeks now.

      • I'm a couple months in and I've spoken to a number of people on live chat as well as their retention team and nobody is budging with recontracting my plan

        • I called the online sales team up and they recontract my plan without any penalties. My partner does the same too.

      • gah, just tried their chat team and telephone services and all refused to recontract - ive only been on mine since 4 Feb

    • -2

This is why they want to lock people in for 12 months, because in 3 months they'll release a better plan, and in 6 months again!

That's why I laugh at people signing up for LOCK IN CONTRACTS for SIM ONLY! That's a joke!

      • +1

It depends on your usage. I find $40 ($36 with student discount) for 12Gb a pretty decent deal and you may not find it anywhere soon.

  • I spoke to optus via chat they claim the $10 discount still applies if you have broadband.

    Can someone confirm this?

    • I just recontracted from a plan where the $10 was being applied, even though I wasn't the account holder of the broadband plan, if I lose it I'll head into the store to contest.

So should still work, but unlike the $20 discount the $10 should still work as it's the house address, not account holder.

  • Can somebody please PM me with their student discount code + e-mail address as they will send through to that?

edit: got access to my student e-mails. All good!

  • Looking form discount code if it's not needed by anyone

  • $36 for a student sounds good, but Optus have the worse feedback from customers! No way I'd lock in 12 months with a carrier which gets such a bad rap!

Vodafone has $40, for 10GB. Just seems to be the standard rate atm with a 12 month lock in! Its early days in the year, may be better off waiting for a better deal.

  • In the Email it says 24 month phone?…and when i entered the code it says 10% off 1st month.

"Here's your promo code to save 10% off your monthly plan fees on any 24 month phone plan or SIM Only plan. Just apply your code in checkout."

  • Anyone with edu.au email and promo code I could use please?

  • I have three numbers with optus 10gb for 40dollars plan. They expires in May, Jun and july. Can I recontract them at the same time?

It will be 312 gb for 336 dollars right?

  • -1

Similar plan as my $40 virgin with 13.5gb data

    • me too. I'd happily drop to 7gb with free music streaming if i could pay less than $40 a month

  • Has anyone managed to recontract with EPL and 12 GB?

  • Looking for a .edu email and code too please

  • -2

    pm me for code

    • Could I pls have your email and code for 10% off?

  • Does anyone know what Optus coverage is like around banksia / rockdale? It's quite a dead spot with Vodafone so looking at porting over.

  • +1

    FYI

I just managed to get vodafone to match this contract through online chat, just sent them the link.. Didnt have to provide a student number

Vodafone has much better coverage in my area

    • Ummm yes Vodafone customer service is better too! It's just Optus has better network around rural areas when u travel

    • Did they do anything for the music streaming?

  • I'm looking to get onto a cheaper option once my post paid contract runs up this month. I'm tossing between this and Boost pre paid.

Optus because of the data value and free music streaming.

Boost because of them being on the Telstra network and I'd imagine would have better coverage.

I would like better coverage, data isn't as important to me, but does anyone know if there is much of a difference coverage wise between the two?

Any opinions on what I should go for?

  • Not Expired. Online link shows Online offer ends 26/3/17.

  • The extra 2gb is only for 12 months yea? So after 12 months your data inclusion would revert to 10gb?
