Do I need this if I already have a 2017 Sony TV with built-in Android TV?

    • +4

      2017 vs 2020.

    • +6

Only if your Sony TV feels too sluggish/missing features from the latest Android TV that you want.

Otherwise if it already does everything you want it to then no point to upgrade :)

    • I think so

    • +1

The apps run alot smoother on this than on my LG CX9 native interface.

      • Which apps in particular? WebOS streaming apps (Netflix, Amazon Prime etc) are very fast and slick on my CX9. I have Chromecast Ultra plugged into it and rarely use it.

        • +1

Plex, Disney, Netflix and 9now are the main ones we use.

I'm not complaining about the speed of the native LG interface, just stating I believe the browsing experience is more smooth on the Google tv.

    • +1

Probably not, but confirm if the Sony is still regularly getting major OS updates. 2021 Sony TVs will support Google OS, so I assume some older Sony TVs will also move over.

I'd personally wait for something with AV1 support.

      • yea its sucks this new device doesnt support av1

        • Debuted right as the successor chip - which does - was announced. :(

          Look out for S905X4 devices.

    • +1

      Probably!

But only upgrade if you find your existing SmartTV app experiences tedious and frustrating on a regular basis.

Everyone has different tolerances. Waiting may allow for better prices and more time for Google to smooth out bugs.

    • +1

If you go away on holidays then you can cast your own movies?

    • I have Sony tv with Android tv, also have this for a different tv.

      Short answer: no

Long answer: depends what you use it for and your overall experience with Android tv. However, there are only niche situations where I'd say you should consider this

    • I think mine is a 2016 Sony TV with Android TV.

Huge difference using chromecast with google tv. 100x smoother, doesn't lag, crash, more responsive, etc.

One example is the NBA app. Lagged a lot on the in built android tv - sometimes would crash. On the chromecast with google tv no such issues

      • 100x smoother, doesn't lag, crash, more responsive, etc.

        5 years old so yeah.

1-3 years old (with updates) probably not much.

    • The Sony TV won't have voice search (mic on the remote), but will do most other things.

The Sony initially supported some extra TV apps than android TV, like the Australian streaming services, but the providers have since released proper versions of these for android TV, so no difference now.

Google TV is a slightly modified (cut down??) version of Android TV, which the Sony TV has a full version of. Don't know that there are huge differences.

Don't know about differences in memory and GPU, which will affect games in particular.

The Sony will not stay as up to date.

  • Would this also work with good guys comercial?

    • Don’t think it does, but you can try price matching it with the commercial price, then pay with Latitude Pay

    • -2

      Good guys do terrible commercials…

      • +4

And you do same terrible jokes

        • -2

          What jokes?

    • Depends who you chat to in store, I've had contrasting experiences with one person refusing to match the price on a $20 ($5 discount) item then I've had a bloke match the price on a $700 ($250 discount) item.

    • +2

I tried to get a Bosch Pyrolytic oven price matched instore in Midland with their Commercial price and the saleswoman flat out refused and actually got a bit shirty. I went to their Osborne Park store and after a bit of too and fro, the salesman matched the price

  • +1

So literally retail price with the same deal that's already been posted applied. Not really a deal in itself. You could post any item in the place as a new "deal".

    • Like some other deals that get renewed every 6 months?

      • +2

Think they mean that you could pick any product that has a pretty stable RRP and post it as a deal with the discount mentioned.

        • Yeah, let's have every <$100 item with the $20 latitude discount lol

  • New customers only right?

    • New customers initially, existing customers from the 21st for two days.

  • Can these things be setup to run of your phone's hotspot if wifi isn't available?

    • +3

Yes. They work like a normal mobile phone wifi. Picks up whatever wifi that is available that has been used before. Very good unit IMO. Get set up to use VPN too with a bit of effort.

      • thanks

      • Is it only 2.4ghz?

        • no, 5ghz also

          • @gdozbargain: That's strange when I was connecting it would not pick up and of the 5ghz SSIDs

            • +2

@eggaz: change your 5Ghz channel to a 2-digit one like 36, likely you got it set to 3-digit e.g. 153 which doesn't work with some devices.

              • @FeZZa21: Thats interesting. Will give that a go, thanks for the tip.

        • Some 5GHz channels can have issues if you are near an airport or weather radar service.

    • +6

Whoah i didn't know you post normal comments… unless you're not the jv we all love/hate

      • +1

he's only normal when he needs/wants something

  • Would I be able to chromecast without the remote (like a chromecast ultra), or is the remote a must to use this?

    .

    • Yes works with phone as Chromecast.

  • Anyone use one of these to play 4k HEVC content on Kodi? Any issues?

    • +1

Worked fine for me, but I couldn't get any Atmos out of Kodi no matter what I tried. Worked fine with VLC though, so might just have been the file/settings

      • Thanks. I get stuttering when I use Kodi via the Android OS on my TCL 65C715. Jellyfin plays it fine but stutters when I turn the subtitles on (probably because I disabled transcoding as it was transcoding everything regardless of device capability).

So looking at this as a hassle free alternative.

    • If you do this (as a note for those without it) you'll need to make sure your WiFi is up to the task.

    • ive had one for 3 days and had no issues with it so far. 4k content and using steamlink is flawless

      • Steampunk? How does that fit into this? You are talking about the device from steam right?

        • Steamlink is software that allows you to stream games you add via add non ateam game or games purchased on steam from your pc to your tv. Its nice for singleplayer games.

          • @HKS: I've got a steamlink (the device) and the software but didn't know it worked with chromecast
Edit: Ah, right, steamlink app for Android tv
            Makes sense

            • @digitizer: Yea they discontinued the physical device and made it software based which works on this chromecast, apple tv and nvidia shields

  • +5

Not sure a $20 saving is really worth latitude pinging ones credit score

  • Anyone use this with plex? My q70 is useless and can't play videos from there

    • Smooth as butter mate. No issues whatsoever.

  • The Plex client works. Dolby Digital audio transcodes all the time though, and sometimes I get an error when I do a fast forward or rewind. I have a Firestick 4K in the other room which works better with Plex as Dolby Digital/ DTS is Direct Play with no transcoding.

  • Having a Sony Bravia without android and relying on their terrible app store I must say this thing has been brilliant. Love being tablet to search across platforms. Also like that controls the power and sound for the TV.

  • Can these handle HEVC / x265 codec?

I have a Shield TV so I'm good, but my brother wants a cheaper solution and he wants to be able to view these videos.

    • +1

yes 4k uses HEVC and this does 4k so yes

      • Thank you I will pass on the good news

        • +1

Don't be in a rush to get this..
better do some proper reviews if it can play the HEVC / x265 etc..

I want to play those files as well..

Also is he streaming from youtube 4k or playing it locally?

And there is 4k HEVC 10bit HDR etc..

Not sure if this can play those files locally or from streaming site.

          • @pinkybrain: He will be playing locally. Unlikely much 4k, mostly 1080p. HEVC.

  • Do these work with ethernet?

    • If you get the right adapters but not natively.

      • this has not ethernet port on the power plug?

        • Looked it up, you can buy a 10/100 capable power adaptor (can't use the old Chromecast one) but you're better off using a type c dongle/hub with pd power and ethernet for similar money.

          • @AEKaBeer: ah that sucks

last version had an ethernet adapter built into the power plug

When you need to add that extra accessory, the price is less good

Not sure if you can watch 4k smoothly without ethernet.

  • FYI, I used the same Latitude pay deal during the boxing day but TGG deemed Shopback rebate ineligible for me.

    • did you have to use multiple accounts since they only allow one discount per account?

      • What I mean is I didn't do anything this time (Only 1 purchase with Latitude Pay in Dec 2020) but when I used Latitude pay last month, TGG did not pay the rebate on that purchase.

  • +2

Pro tip, I got one of these from JB for $50 just by asking for their best deal.

    • Being serious? That’s a steal

    • +1

Which store?….can you share the receipt?

    • Protip. Google used to hire their own merchandising staff and product specialists to be in store at Jb hifi, Telstra and Harvey Norman. So you may have been dealing with a spy who could do that deal from consignment stock.

    • I just tried to use your receipt today but was told the best they could do was $89. They gave some excuse about sales before Christmas, like the receipt was too old to price match.

  • +1

Does opening a latitude pay impact credit score?

    • It does involve a credit check. For some this may result in a small fall in your score for others nothing. Of course the credit score rebounds quickly for on time payments.

  • i live near Marion. what are my chances of snaring one for the same price?

  • After owning multiple chromecasts and other various streaming devices, I can confidently say this is the best tv tech out there. We have an old samsung in our room with CEC and now we never have to use the samsung remote. It's honestly perfect for anyone that has a tv older than 5 years.

  • Is latitudepay same with 28 degrees?
