Short term TV rental options

So our three year old threw one of his toys at the telly and now it's dead. No worries, I used it as an opportunity to buy the TV I really wanted, the Sony A90J 65". Placed my order at Appliances Online, dutifully waited two weeks until the estimated delivery date and, the day before, got a message saying the cupboard was bare — no stock.

After a few calls it seems the best estimate they can give me is "January". That's a long time without a TV…

I'm wondering about renting in the interim. Can anybody recommend a short term TV rental option (in Sydney)? Looks like there are a bunch of places that fit the bill, but I'm not really sure how to pick one from the pile.

It's not a rental but a rent to buy scheme… You can't return it and walk away.

Plus it's cheaper to just buy it on a credit card and pay 20%..

They really prey on the vulnerable and those really bad with money.

      • Yeah, there's a thick whiff of "how desperate are you?" about the rental sites I looked at, which is why I'm keen for any pointers.

Get an old one on Gumtree for $50-100?

    • That's a pretty good idea.

I don't really want to be stuck getting rid of two TVs at the end of this, but maybe it'll just be the most cost effective solution.

  • Yeah plenty of used TVs on gumtree etc

  • As above.. cheap one from Gumtree/FB and then flog it off on Gumtree.

Watch (streamed) "TV" on whatever you used to post this…

    • Ahahahah. I think you missed the bit about the three year old. Family time together on the couch is very, very different to watching Octonauts on daddy's work computer. :D

    Buy it somewhere else?

Can you cancel the order and buy elsewhere? How much did you pick it up for?

    • Out of stock everywhere it looks like. Even Sony's direct sales are looking grim — yesterday their site said shipping November 11, today it's out to November 22. Probably just a made up date.

Got it during the AO birthday sale, $4,801. Given the delays I'd willingly cancel and order elsewhere at a higher price, if there were stock. :\

  • Gumtree/marketplace
buy one for the right price and you can hand it back/sell it for more.

  • watch TV on PC ? you can use a cheap USB TV card

Family member or friend got an old one you can borrow for a few months?

    • Making enquiries presently. Just trying to hedge my options a bit if nobody can help out.

Unpopular option - buy one from aldi, return it when your new one comes.

Harvey (shudders) has it in stock in VIC for $150 more than you paid

    https://www.harveynorman.com.au/sony-65-inch-xr-master-serie…

You'll spend a ton more trying to rent a tv for that period. And I'm sure you could get HN down $200 on the price.
